Unbuckled motorist faces cocaine charge
"A motorist learned over the weekend that not wearing a seat belt can lead to further difficulties with police -- especially if officers report finding drugs and money in your car.
A 35-year-old Muskegon man was pulled over by police at 9:40 p.m. Friday on the exit ramp from I-96 to Airline Road. 'He was stopped for not wearing a seat belt,' said Lt. Jon Gale.
Police then discovered he was wanted on a parole violation warrant and had been driving without a license. He was told he was under arrest.
But it was the package containing 71 grams of suspected powder cocaine on the passenger seat that landed the driver in even more trouble, according to police. A scale was found near the cocaine.
In addition, $3,800 cash had been shoved into a purse that was near the cocaine, Gale said. The purse belonged to a female passenger who later was released from custody.
'The subject admitted to selling cocaine and that it (the drug found on the passenger seat) was his,' Gale said.
The man was lodged at the Muskegon County Jail for possession with intent to deliver cocaine as well as the warrant and license offense. Arraignment was pending Monday morning."
