"Perhaps most important, however, the designation brings with it elevated consideration for federal grants spread across 11 Cabinet agencies.
.....“It puts us at the head of the line in a lot of cases,” said Bryce Kelley, the director of Wayne County’s economic development agency.
Detroit, Flint, Lansing, Ann Arbor and Pontiac are among the 47 communities taking part in the consortium.
....Last fall, the Obama administration unveiled a $300-million aid package for bankrupt Detroit in the hopes of ensuring the city spent the funding it had already been awarded."
