Residents of Austin, Texas have received this year’s property tax bill and homeowners are upset. Real estate values have risen dramatically and property taxes have gone up as well, sparking concerns about affordability for long time residents.
It turns out though that the real problem is more than a broken tax system. Residents have voted for a lots of improvements and goodies over the years and now the bill is coming due.
One homeowner, apparently clueless about how things get paid for said this:
I’m at the breaking point. It’s not because I don’t like paying taxes. I have voted for every park, every library, all the school improvements, for light rail, for anything that will make this city better. But now I can’t afford to live here anymore. I’ll protest my appraisal notice, but that’s not enough. Someone needs to step in and address the big picture.
