"Detroit City Councilman Scott Benson was arraigned this week on charges that his blood alcohol level during a June traffic stop was high enough for him to be charged under Michigan’s so-called super drunk laws that carry stiffer penalties, officials said today.Southfield Police said Benson’s blood-alcohol level was .244 — far above the .17 threshold for high-BAC drunken driving arrests — after he was found slumped over the steering wheel of his city-issued Ford Crown Victoria the night of June 29 on the southbound Southfield Freeway service drive just north of 8 Mile.
Benson was arraigned Thursday in Southfield’s 46th District Court on charges of driving with a blood alcohol level of .17 or higher and of having open intoxicants in the vehicle. The city later took the councilman’s car away. "
