"The self-proclaimed "boy lover" who traveled to Florida in part to have sex with a 14-year-old was formally indicted in federal court Thursday, records show.
James Cavalcoli, 51, is still officially on a leave of absence from his position at the University of Michigan where he is an assistant professor of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics, according to spokeswoman Mary Masson.
Cavalcoli has been with the school for almost 13 years.
...Masson said by email Friday that it is not correct to say the university planned to terminate Cavalcoli upon indictment.
Masson could not comment on whether he is still being paid or when, if ever, he will be terminated.
"We are not able to speak publicly about confidential personnel matters concerning James Cavalcoli," she said.
...He confessed he had come to the hotel to meet the boy for sex.
Cavalcoli was indicted on two counts of federal sex crimes.
He faces up to 20 years in prison.
A judge ruled that Cavalcoli will remain in custody pending trial."
