Muskegon Community Paddle heads out on the Muskegon River Aug. 8 | MLive.com: "MUSKEGON, MI – The Muskegon Community Paddle series of meet-up events will have a unique gathering Saturday, Aug. 8.
In past years, all of the Community Paddles started and finished at the same place, mainly at various locations around Muskegon Lake.
Saturday's Community Paddle will be a float on the lower portion of the Muskegon River from Muskegon Township's North Creston Street-end launch site to Veterans Memorial Park near the river outlet on Muskegon Lake.
The second and final Community Paddle will be the following Saturday Aug. 15 at the Harbour Towne Beach on the west end of Muskegon Lake as part of the Muskegon Lake Effect Boating's Michigan Maritime Celebration...
For Aug. 8, organizers are working with Guy's Ultimate Kayak Service of Muskegon to provide equipment and logistics for what can be an hour to up to two hours on the river depending on participants' preferences.
The point-to-point paddle will launch from the Creston Street-end launch at approximately 10 a.m.
The launch site is at the end of Giles Road beyond the Reeths-Puffer school facilities.
Take Giles to North Creston Street and turn right, south to the road's end at the river.
The Community Paddle will end at the Veteran's Memorial Park adjacent to the parking lot on the southbound bridge of M-120 in the northwest corner of the refurbished park.
There is plenty of parking on the south bank of the Muskegon River both near the northbound and southbound M-120 bridges.
Parking is more limited at the Creston Street-end launch site.
However, organizers will provide transportation between the launch sites before the event beginning at 9 a.m. and at the end of the Community Paddle.
The kayak service has a large trailer able to haul canoes and kayaks between the two sites.
Owner Guy DeBor said he'd offer that service for tips.
Anyone can participate in the Muskegon Community Paddle with a kayak, canoe, standup paddle board or other paddle craft. Participants must have a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device.
Guy's Ultimate Kayak will provide Community Paddle participants with a basic kayak for $10 – a 50 percent discount for the event. Equipment is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

"Everyone loves being on the Muskegon River," said DeBor, who is in the second year of his kayak and River Cat rental business.
"Unlike the Grand River or the upper Muskegon River, the lower Muskegon through the Muskegon State Game Area has no residences. It is natural and quiet.""
