Of the 2.5 million families in Michigan, only 7 percent fit the traditional stereotype: A married couple with children under 18 where the husband works and the wife stays home, according to data recently released as part of the U.S. Bureau's 2014 American Community Survey.
One factor: A shrinking number of Michigan families include children. In 2005, 47 percent of Michigan families had children under 18; in 2014, it was 41 percent.
