Many Oppose The Practice Of Female Genital Mutilation- UNICEF Figures:
"New data from the United Nations Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) reveals that about two-thirds of men, women, boys and girls in countries where female genital mutilation (FGM) is common say they want the practice to end.
FGM involves the partial or total removal of the female external genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
In countries with available data, 67% of girls and women and 63% of boys and men oppose the continuation of the practice in their communities.
The head of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has, for the first time, described female genital mutilation as 'child abuse'.
...‘Two-thirds of people in Africa, the Middle East and Asia, where female genital mutilation is common oppose the practice and want it stopped. UNICEF estimates that at 200 million girls and women alive today in 30 countries around the world have undergone female genital mutilation.’
..."Unfortunately, individuals' desire to end female genital mutilation is often hidden, and many women and men still believe the practice is needed in order for them to be accepted in their communities," she added..."
