"Tens of thousands of workers in downtown Detroit — likely including bankers slurping coffee in their offices and restaurant workers prepping salads and fruit for Wednesday's lunch hour — unknowingly were using water most of the day Wednesday that the city water department was advising might not be safe to drink.
Tuesday night, the Detroit Water & Sewerage Department gave vague boundaries for the boil water alert but didn't specifically spell out that it included most of the city including downtown.
One of downtown Detroit's biggest landlords advised its tenants — including trendy restaurants and towering office buildings — they weren't affected.
It wasn't until a revised advisory was issued late Wednesday morning that it became clear the affected area included all of downtown and Midtown, the home of a half-dozen hospitals and Wayne State University.
