Revenues from the federal income tax have increased an astonishing 340,000% since the program was established by Woodrow Wilson in 1913. 
And yes, that's adjusted for inflation!
Originally intended to only apply to the very wealthy, FDR expanded it to the middle class, and it's grown steadily since then. 
Today, Americans pay over $2.2 trillion in federal individual and corporate income tax.
