Michigan Dems pushing bills to address 'literacy crisis' | MLive.com:
"Saying Michigan is facing a "literacy crisis," a group of Democrats in the state House of Representatives are pushing legislation that would pump more dollars into programs they say will help the state's youngest learners read better.
The six-bill package would expand the number of children eligible to participate in Michigan's state-funded preschool program, take additional steps to identify and support kindergarten students who are behind in reading, and increase funding for health and early childhood education professionals to conduct home visits designed to prepare young children for school.
Rep. Darrin Camilleri, a Democrat from Wayne County who's among the lead sponsors of the bills, said it's unclear how much the legislation would cost.
