"Preparations for Saturday’s Veterans Day observances have this column thinking of an event last month that deserved more attention. Specifically, in a long overdue ceremony at the White House, President Donald Trump awarded the Medal of Honor to retired U.S. Army Captain Gary Michael Rose for his astounding bravery during the Vietnam War’s “Operation Tailwind” in September of 1970.
Then-Sergeant Rose, a Special Forces medic, was dropped off by helicopter in enemy territory in Laos along with 16 of his American comrades and more than 100 Montagnard and Vietnamese allies. They moved even deeper into hostile territory and would spend the next four days under nearly constant attack by the communist North Vietnamese Army.
The Americans and their allies began taking casualties almost immediately.
According to the U.S. Army:
One of the wounded was trapped outside the company defensive perimeter. Rose, engaging the enemy, rushed to get the wounded Soldier.
Rose rendered expert medical treatment and stabilized the wounded Soldier, and carried the man through the heavy gunfire back to the company defensive area.
This was apparently a habit for Sgt. Rose.
He suffered various wounds over the course of the mission but continued to crawl through gunfire to treat others..."
