A convicted cop killer walked out of prison on parole Friday after nearly 40 years behind bars — over the angry protests of police unions and some politicians.
...Bell, 70, was convicted in 1979 of the 1971 murders of Police Officers Joseph Piagentini and Waverly Jones in Harlem.
He was also convicted of the 1971 murder of a California cop.

Sen. Golden (R-Brooklyn) said Bell’s parole approval sent the wrong message.
He compared the decision to the release of Palm Sunday Massacre killer Christopher Thomas, who murdered 10 people in one day in 1984.
Thomas got out in March after 32 years in prison..."
