These things, and the hopes they both reflect and engender, have sustained the left and never-Trumpers of all parties for a long long time. 
They are like a drug, and as with any drug, one can become addicted or at least dependent.
An addiction begins to end when the drug is withdrawn, but the addict can and often does substitute another. 
Democrats have been preparing the new drug, much like the old one: Congressional investigations.
