Tide gauges provide the only direct and detailed long term analysis of sea-level rise available. Satellite data is only available for the last 30 or so years.

The globe began warming in the late 1600s but the planet didn't warm enough until about 1820 for summer ice loss to exceed winter ice accumulation and cause glacial retreat.
