First of all, women are more likely to survive pregnancy and birth to enjoy the status of a mother in the first place. “Maternal mortality” refers to the death of the mother during either pregnancy or childbirth. According to data from the World Bank, in 1990, the global maternal mortality rate stood at 340 per 100,000 live births. By 2015 that figure had fallen to 169. That represents a decline of over 50 percent.
