"...The parents of a California middle schooler said their teenage daughter was suspended after fighting back against her attacker — an altercation caught on cellphone video — and that she also has been subjected to harassment and cyber-bullying via "blackmail pages" on Instagram, KXTV-TV reported.
That’s right. The girl in question was attacked and defended herself.
Now, we know good and well that self-defense is a basic human right, that we have the right to protect ourselves from any violent attack with an appropriate level of violence.This is a fundamental right, one exercised an estimated an untold number of times per year.
Yet this young girl was suspended for it....
- ...This is what our schools do. They tout a zero-tolerance policy toward bullying, then they actually empower the bullies because they know their targets are unlikely to fight back. Then, if one does, they get in trouble, thus sending a signal to just let the torment happen.
- What does that teach our kids? It teaches them to become victims, to accept whatever is dished out.
- Walking away from a violent attack doesn’t work. At best, it tells the bullies that they can do as they wish without penalty, either from the school or their target..."
