They Want to Shut You (and 303 Creative) Up - WSJ

They Want to Shut You (and 303 Creative) Up - WSJ - By Daniel Henninger"...But proponents of speech codes regard some speech as so odious that it deserves no protection.
Reasonable people might think there is a middle ground, but let me explain political gridlock.
  • A primary reason compromise today is nigh impossible is the right recognizes that their opposition is no longer traditional liberals, such as Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, but instead progressives such as Sen. Chuck Schumer, who will pocket any concession and immediately commence expanding it past the boundaries of the compromise.
So it has been with the elastic definitions of hate speech.
  • “Hate speech” in earlier arguments to ban it was equated with “fighting words” and incitements to violence, which don’t receive First Amendment protection. But increasingly, the self-righteous left has donned the halo of antidiscrimination laws to create a society that bans an array of spoken and written opinions they just don’t like. In their world, virtually any expression uncongenial to their views can be defined as “violence” of some sort...
