Andrew Huszar: Confessions of a Quantitative Easer - WSJ.com:
"I can only say: I'm sorry, America.
As a former Federal Reserve official, I was responsible for executing the centerpiece program of the Fed's first plunge into the bond-buying experiment known as quantitative easing.
The central bank continues to spin QE as a tool for helping Main Street.
But I've come to recognize the program for what it really is: the greatest backdoor Wall Street bailout of all time."

Medicaid's awful results: Column
Medicaid's awful results: Column:
"Coverage isn't care, notes Roy -- and in the case of Medicaid, coverage may be worse than not being covered.
That's because extensive research indicates that Medicaid recipients actually do worse than people without any insurance at all.
A University of Virginia study found that Medicaid patients hospitalized for major surgery were actually 13% more likely to die in the hospital than those without any health insurance.
Likewise, the National Cancer Institute found that late-stage prostate cancer, late-stage breast cancer, and late-stage melanoma were actually much more common in Medicaid recipients than in the uninsured.
And a Johns Hopkins study of patients receiving lung transplants found that Medicaid patients were 29% more likely to die within three years."
...Why Medicaid recipients do worse isn't entirely clear, but it's likely because the best doctors seldom accept Medicaid, leaving patients with subpar physicians.
In addition, Roy opens with the story of Deamonte Driver, a seventh grader with a tooth abscess who wound up dying when it turned into a brain infection, after being shuffled from doctor to doctor for weeks. Uninsured patients probably go straight to the Emergency Room or to a free clinic, while Medicaid recipients may waste precious days, weeks, or months trying to navigate the bureaucracy.

Doctors Will Be Left Paying Tab for Obamacare ‘Grace Periods’: Report | TheBlaze.com:
"The Affordable Care Act entitles consumers eligible for the federal subsidy to three “free” months of health care if they choose to default on their premiums, meaning doctors and hospitals will be left paying the tab.
If people can’t pay their premiums and instead decide to cancel their policies, they are given a three-month “grace period,” Watchdog.org reports.
..Consumers need to pay a premium for just one month to be eligible for the three-month grace period, according to Section 156.270 of the Affordable Care Act.
The insurance company then covers claims for the first month while doctors and hospitals are left covering the remaining two months.

Be afraid. Be VERY afraid........From my friends at MoveOn.org
Dear
Michigan MoveOn member,
I'm Kate Madigan, a member of the organization Climate Parents, and I started a petition to the Michigan State Board of Education, which says:
So I was heartened to learn that the Michigan State Board of Education is considering adoption of 21st-century science standards that include climate science, beginning with a public hearing on November 19 in Lansing.
The board is being pressured to reject the new, world-class science standards by climate change deniers like State Representative Tom McMillin. Rep. McMillin recently introduced a bill to stop the NGSS from being taught because, as he said, the standards "get into controversial issues such as man-made global warming as fact."
At a time when impacts like drought, more intense storms, and heat waves have already begun to take a toll on Michigan agriculture and the Great Lakes, it's more important than ever for Michigan students to gain a strong understanding of the causes and impacts of climate change.
Let's tell the State Board of Education that the Next Generation Science Standards will give our kids the foundation to identify the solutions we need.
Thanks!
–Kate Madigan

I'm Kate Madigan, a member of the organization Climate Parents, and I started a petition to the Michigan State Board of Education, which says:
Please support the Next Generation
Science Standards (NGSS) for the benefit of Michigan students. Our children
deserve the best possible science education, and that includes gaining a
foundation in climate science. The NGSS will help Michigan students prepare for
the challenges and opportunities they will face throughout their lives.
When I
became a mom, my desire to help create a better world became more personal and
urgent. I've reflected on the biggest challenges my two sons will face. Doing
something about climate change rose to the top of my list. So I was heartened to learn that the Michigan State Board of Education is considering adoption of 21st-century science standards that include climate science, beginning with a public hearing on November 19 in Lansing.

"Federal officials are hosting a public meeting in Oakland County this week to discuss placing two butterfly species on the endangered list.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wants to protect the Dakota skipper and the Poweshiek skipperling.
The Poweshiek skipperling previously was found in Michigan and seven other states, as well as Canada.
It now inhabits only a few native prairie remnants in Wisconsin and Michigan, and in the Canadian province of Manitoba.
Surveys indicate that Poweshiek skipperlings are gone from nearly 90 percent of the sites where they once were found.
The Dakota skipper is found in Minnesota, North and South Dakota, and Canada.
Both species are threatened by habitat loss."

Now, he said the USDA plans to green-light poultry raised and slaughtered in China.
This has never happened before, and it is a bad idea, Schumer argued.

My Way News - WWII Doolittle Raiders making final toast:
"After Thomas Griffin of Cincinnati died in February at age 96, the survivors decided they would gather this autumn for one last toast together.
Only four of the 80 Raiders are still alive, and one wasn't able to travel because of his health.
Raiders expected to attend were Richard Cole, Doolittle's co-pilot, of Comfort, Texas; David Thatcher of Missoula, Mont., and Edward Saylor of Puyallup, Wash.
Fourth surviving Raider, Robert Hite, 93, won't make it but his son and other family members from Nashville, Tenn., planned to be there.
Hite is the last alive of eight Raiders who were captured by Japanese soldiers.
Three were executed; another died in captivity.
The goblets, presented to the Raiders in 1959 by the city of Tucson, Ariz., have the Raiders' names engraved twice, the second upside-down. During the ceremony, white-gloved cadets pour cognac into the participants' goblets.
Those of the deceased are turned upside-down.
The cognac will be from 1896, Doolittle's birth year."

United States of Underemployment: Dead-End Jobs Prop Up Employment Growth | Breakout - Yahoo Finance:
""It's a weird report" says Zachary Karabell, the head of global strategy at Envestnet and founder of River Twice Research in the attached video.
"It's people tending bar.
It's lower wage retail jobs.
It's lower wage health services jobs" that the economy is creating, and "a lot of these are not particularly well paid and they don't have a great future."
And that's a problem.
Not only for the 14-million American who are still out of work and looking to get hired, but more broadly, it undercuts the entire economy.
"If you're earning $18,000 a year as a bartender, that's not going to translate into massive consumer spending," Karabell says.
Nor is it going to generate massive taxpaying either"

No woman will take a seat at the decision-making table of this city.

Just the optics of an all-male commission for a city this size, where about half the population is women, is cringe-worthy.
What also is missing is a representative voice(s) at the table."

"The Onion Will End Its Print Run in December
The Onion, arguably the most read satirical site on the Net, is closing up the last of its print markets with the final publication in December.
The Onion will then be found only in digital form online, folding to the same economic pressures as other print mediums are facing.
Then again, this is the Onion, the whole announcement might be a prank."

Venezuelan military seizes major retail chain:
"CARACAS — Thousands of Venezuelans lined up outside the country's equivalent of Best Buy, a chain of electronics stores known as Daka, hoping for a bargain after the socialist government forced the company to charge customers "fair" prices.
President Nicolás Maduro ordered a military "occupation" of the company's five stores as he continues the government's crackdown on an "economic war" it says is being waged against the country, with the help of Washington.
Members of Venezuela's National Guard, some of whom carried assault rifles, kept order at the stores as bargain hunters rushed to get inside.
"I want a Sony plasma television for the house," said Amanda Lisboa, 34, a business administrator, who had waited seven hours already outside one Caracas store. "It's going to be so cheap!""

EPA Closure of Last Lead Smelting Plant to Impact Ammunition Production
EPA Closure of Last Lead Smelting Plant to Impact Ammunition Production
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is not content to infringe on property rights; recent actions taken against the country's last lead smelting facility will affect the right to keep and bear arms, as well, by substantially impacting the production of ammunition. As of December 31, 2013, the lead refining plant will close for good.
About 145 employees of the Doe Run lead smelter [in Herculaneum, Missouri] learned they will lose their jobs at the end of December because of the plant’s closure, the Doe Run Co. said Wednesday. An additional 73 contractor jobs also will be eliminated.
The job cuts were expected. The plant, which has operated for more than a century and is the lone remaining lead smelter in the United States, announced in 2010 that it will cease operations at the end of this year.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said the company “made a business decision” to shut down the smelter instead of installing pollution control technologies needed to reduce sulfur dioxide and lead emissions as required by the Clean Air Act.
That all sounds so very sterile, but the truth of the matter is that in shuttering this plant, the Obama administration has taken yet another unconstitutional step, one that will severely impinge on the nation's ammunition manufacturing capability. Why would the Doe Run Company, the owners of the Missouri lead smelting facility, agree to being run out of business by the EPA? One word: extortion.
In a document published on its website, the EPA explains that in order for Doe Run to continue its operations, the company would have to agree to pay “$65 million to correct violations of several environmental laws at 10 of its lead mining, milling and smelting facilities in southeast Missouri. The settlement also requires the company to pay a $7 million civil penalty.”

Mobilization of millions, building tens of thousands of tanks,
planes, jeeps, subs, cruisers, destroyers, torpedoes, millions upon millions of

Two dead, 22 hurt in another US shooting:
"Two people have been killed and at least 22 others hurt when gunfire rang out at a large house party in suburban Houston, sending partygoers fleeing in panic, authorities said.
The shots erupted late Saturday night at the party where more than 100 mostly young adults had gathered at a home in the Cypress area of Houston's suburbs, the Harris County Sheriff's Office said."

"I don't have all of the facts, but I'm outraged that a 19-year-old was shot in the face and no one has been arrested," said Dream Hampton, one of the organizers of the demonstration.
About 50 demonstrators gathered to demand an arrest.
There carried signs that read "Justice for Renisha" and repeatedly chanted the victim's name.
"I don't need the whole story at this point," said Hampton.
"I need somebody in handcuffs, whether the charge is manslaughter... or whatever."
"I need somebody in handcuffs, whether the charge is manslaughter... or whatever."
....."Black life is so devalued... It makes people like the one who did that so full of fear. If this man was afraid, he could have just picked up the phone and dialed 911."
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and social media activity reminiscent of the response to the 2012 Florida shooting of Trayvon Martin, a black teenager who was shot and killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer.
"It's amazing that in 2013, we still see the lack of value on African American life," said Rev. David Bullock of Greater St. Matthew Baptist Church in Highland Park.
"We though it was just in Sanford, Florida, but it's also Dearborn Heights, Michigan...
We cannot let the system that is supposed to deliver justice off the hook.
We understand there is a process, but you remember when Trayvon Martin was killed... they were shuffling their feet."
He said there may not have been any prosecution in that case had there not been a national outcry.
The shooter, George Zimmerman, was ultimately acquitted.

"If I knock on somebody's door and they are worried why I'm there, they can call 911," Bullock said. "They can come to the door and say 'I'm not opening the door. What do you want?'
"... We cannot stand here and say it is normal to kill a stranger just because you are afraid."
Sam Riddle of the National Action Network said Detroit activists have been in contact with Rev. Al Sharpton and expect him to weigh in on the matter soon.
Sharpton is a nationally known civil rights leader with an ability to mobilize widespread demonstrations.
"Had she been a white woman and the shooter a black man," activist Dawud Walid asked the crowd, "would the shooter be sitting comfortably at home watching TV today?"

Detroit's bankruptcy brings up more than finances - latimes.com: "DETROIT — Sheilah Johnson was a building inspector for the city for 28 years, a college graduate who passed up jobs that paid more because a city job offered stability and the promise of a good pension. (Yeah, right...)
But the city's recent plunge into bankruptcy — overseen by an outside emergency manager answerable to the state government, not the citizens of Detroit — makes her wonder whether she and other African American residents of the impoverished city will be able to stop Wall Street creditors from seizing what's left of a municipal treasury they paid into for most of their lives. (Umm, dear.... there is nothing left in the treasury. You spent it all. It's not the banks that want money. It's the UNIONS who bankrupted the city that want the money!)
"When my 9-year-old grandson asks me, 'Grandma, are they trying to make us slaves again?' how do I answer that child?" Johnson said, breaking into tears during court hearings over the city's bid to launch the nation's largest-ever municipal bankruptcy.
"We do not need a slave owner, and I am not a slave.""

EPA Bans Most Wood-Burning Stoves
EPA Bans Most Wood-Burning Stoves | Off The Grid News:
The EPA has banned the production and sale of the types of stoves used by about 80 percent of those with such stoves. ...
Most of the wood stoves currently nestled inside cabins and homes from coast-to-coast don’t meet the new environmental standard. The EPA launched a “Burn Wise” website to help convince the public that the new regulations were needed.
Trading in an old stove for a newer stove isn’t allowed.
“Replacing an older stove with a cleaner-burning stove will not improve air quality if the older stove is reused somewhere else,” the website says. “For this reason, wood stove change out programs usually require older stoves to be destroyed and recycled as scrap metal, or rendered inoperable.”
In some areas of the country, local governments have gone further than the EPA and banned not just the sale of such stoves, but the usage of old stoves – and even the usage of fireplaces. That means that even if you still have a stove or a fireplace, you can’t burn it for fear of a fine. Puget Sound, Washington, is one such location.

"But there was a time when health experts, and the self-appointed food nannies, thought trans fats were safe.
Indeed, as detailed in this Atlantic piece (and this lengthier academic article), there was a time when groups like the Center for Science in the Public Interest were urging fast food chains and others to replace animal fats with PHOs.
So while CSPI today praises the FDA for targeting trans fats, it also celebrated decisions by fast food chains like Burger King to start using trans fat-heavy PHOs.
In other words, had it not been for the food nannies, American consumption of trans fats might not have been so high in the first place."

Is Chicago More Dangerous than Afghanistan?:
"Chicago, once known most for its wind, the Cubs, and being home to the tallest building in the United States, now has a more ominous and alarming monicker.
This Midwest American city has gained the unfortunate title of Murder Capital, USA. With the highest murder rate out of all 50 states and gun violence at an all time high, crime in Chi-town has become so rampant that seemingly ridiculous comparisons have become actual topics for debate.
One of the most recent assertions: that Chicago has become more dangerous in terms of homicide prevalence than Afghanistan is for a soldier.
Whether this can be supported with evidence is a whole different matter."
