Obama Says Harry Reid Has Helped Him ‘Deal With the Crazies’ | TheBlaze.com:

"President Barack Obama told Democratic donors Monday night that Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has helped him  “deal with the crazies.”

“It’s hard for me to express how much I love Harry Reid, but it’s easier to do it in a room of people who love Harry Reid,” Obama said at the fundraiser, according to the official White House transcript. “Harry and I drove over here together and we were doing a little reminiscing, and then figuring out how we’re going to deal with the crazies in terms of managing some problems. The Left’s Plot to Impoverish America’s Middle Class and Enrich Left-Wing Billionaires | Power Line
...Anthony Watts writes:
Today, the Energy & Environment Legal Institute, a 501 (c) (3) watchdog group, released an investigative report, Private Interests & Public Office:
Coordination Between Governors, the Obama White House and the Tom Steyer-“Founded and Funded” Network of Advocacy Groups to Advance the “Climate” Agenda (and an appendix of source documents), revealing a vast, coordinated, three-track effort by public officials and private interests to promote EPA’s expansive, overreaching and economically devastating greenhouse gas rules, specifically the section 111(d) regulation to shut the nation’s fleet of existing coal-fired power plants, as well as the December Paris climate treaty President Obama is expected to sign to replace the Kyoto Protocol.
“Our report pulls the curtain back on a carefully planned and heavily funded ‘orchestration’ by individuals who have placed their personal interests ahead of the public interest,” said Chris Horner, E&;E Legal’s Senior Legal Fellow and the report’s author.
We have been writing about this unholy left-wing cabal for a long time.
Nothing in American politics is more corrupt than the environmental movement.
...What’s it all about?
Money.
Money for the politically connected, at your expense:
“[W]hat is clear is that 1%-ers are using ‘climate’ policies to destroy politically disfavored industries in order to transfer wealth to the politically preferred,” said Craig Richardson, E&E Legal Executive Director.
“The campaign by self-serving individuals must be made known to the public as policymakers consider this plan that will destroy parts of our economy and ruin the most efficient, affordable, and clean energy system ever created.”
Destruction: that is what the Left leaves in its wake.

‘Little Green Steps’ Reflect Sustainability in Education

‘Little Green Steps’ Reflect Sustainability in Education (Part 2) | Somewhat Reasonable:
"...There is value in teaching our youth to respect our environment and explaining the importance of not polluting the Earth.
However, teaching only one viewpoint about controversial issues, and claiming that only one viewpoint represents established science,  certainly silences any further discussion on the issue.
That is not education, it is indoctrination (brain washing) and thus becomes a form of political pollution in the classroom.
Sustainable development is a “catch phrase” that students in most every American classroom are hearing way too often.
The biased education material presents students with a viewpoint claiming that the Earth is in dire peril due to mans’ irresponsible behavior, and that without an enforced program of sustainability, the Earth is doomed.
Parts of that curriculum are highly debatable, but students are rarely given opposing facts or viewpoints, even though they exist.
Students are rarely taught that a growing number of credible scientists have studied the issue and arrived at different statistics and conclusions than the doomsday apologists...."

Spun out of control-----Second-highest paid L.A. County employee in 2014 didn’t work a single day

Second-highest paid L.A. County employee in 2014 didn’t work a single day:
"The second-highest paid Los Angeles County employee made nearly $790,000 last year, but he didn’t show up to work a single day, newly released salary data show.
Dr. Gail V. Anderson Jr., the former chief medical officer of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, was paid $787,250.91 in pay and benefits in 2014, according to the salary data from L.A. County.
His pay included salary and benefits from portions of 2012, all of 2013 and about half of 2014 as part of a settlement Anderson reached with the county as a result of his termination in 2012, according to a county spokesman.
Anderson was fired in July 2012.
He challenged the termination to the Civil Service Commission and filed a defamation lawsuit against the county.
In settlement over the litigation, Anderson received back pay and was offered his old job back as head of the hospital in an unincorporated area of the county near Torrance.
Almost immediately after he was reinstated, he decided to retire, according to county spokesman Joel Sappell.
Anderson did not return to work at the hospital.
In August 2011, Anderson was placed on paid administrative leave and escorted out of the hospital amid an investigation, according to news reports.
He was fired about a year later.
While Anderson was on administrative leave for about 11 months in 2011 and 2012, he was required to stay at home during work hours."

America's Highways Need That Trillion Dollars Congress Already Spent

America's Highways Need That Trillion Dollars Congress Already Spent - Reason.com:
""The whole interstate highway system over the next two decades is going to reach and exceed 50 years life and need to be replaced," says Bob Poole, who's the director of transportation policy at the Reason Foundation, the nonprofit that publishes Reason.com.
"It's the crown jewel of our transportation system and it's going to start falling apart."
In his June testimony before the House Ways and Means Committee, Poole argued that Congress should begin implementing a long-term plan to fund and reconstruct the interstate system.
The following month, lawmakers passed yet another stop-gap bill that extends transportation funding for a matter of months.
Ahead of that vote, Poole spoke with Reason magazine's Matt Welch, predicting just such an outcome:
"In a few months it'll be a year of temporary extensions."
While Congress is fiddling with general fund revenue to plug immediate transportation financing holes, it is ignoring the massive and inescapable highway project.
In a 2013 study, Poole conservatively estimated a price tag of $1 trillion to rebuild the interstate system.
"Other estimates are higher, but there is no program, no identified funding source, and no possible way the current, as structured Highway Trust Fund could begin to do that project," Poole said.
He notes that politicians have been raiding the trust fund and toll financing revenue streams for decades to pay for programs completely unrelated to highways.
Beyond that, the feds have made it illegal for states to create new toll financing.
They've also eroded the "user-pays" principle that ensures continued financing by charging people based on their road use (e.g., through a gas or mileage tax) and sequestering those funds, rather than relying on general fund revenue that is subject to budget cuts. "

The Biden Plot Thickens

The Biden Plot Thickens - WSJ:
"...On paper at least, Mr. Biden would still be a long shot to defeat the Clinton machine.
Which leads us to wonder what Mr. Biden and Mr. Obama know about Mrs. Clinton’s mishandling of classified information on her personal email server while running the State Department.
The FBI is now investigating, and it’s hard to believe the White House wouldn’t have some inkling about the seriousness of that probe.
The FBI pressed investigations that forced two CIA directors, David Petraeus and John Deutch, into pleading guilty to misdemeanors for lesser violations than Mrs. Clinton appears to have committed.
FBI Director James Comey and Attorney General Loretta Lynch would be hard-pressed to block an FBI recommendation that sought a misdemeanor plea bargain if it were rooted in solid evidence and consistent enforcement under the law.
Such a plea would be devastating to Mrs. Clinton’s credibility even if it didn’t end her campaign.
All of which is to say that the possibility of a third Joe Biden candidacy is looking more appealing than we ever imagined."

Tennessee School District Tells Students They Will Be Kicked Out if They Bring an American Flag Onto School Property | Video | TheBlaze.com:

"A Tennessee school district has banned students from bringing American flags to campus because it doesn’t want to take a chance on students bringing any flags that could be seen as offensive by others.

If students violate the flag ban, they’ll be kicked out of school, students told WHBQ-TV."

The American flag should never be banned.  It is the symbol of our freedom.  Once we compromise the very symbol of our freedom, we are no longer free.  If anyone, within our borders is offended, I believe they will find the borders open and can leave at any time.
Americans die fighting for and preserving our freedom and we are going to ban it from school?
What the hell is wrong with this country?

I see a school district in need of American flags!

China's market Leninism turns dangerous for the world

China's market Leninism turns dangerous for the world - Telegraph:
"The world financial system is at a dangerous juncture.
Markets no longer believe that China’s Communist leaders are in full control of the country’s $27 trillion debt bubble, or know how to manage fast-moving events beyond their ken.
This sudden loss of confidence in the anchor economy of East Asia has struck before the West is fully back on its feet after its own debacle seven years ago.
Interest rates are still near zero in the US, the eurozone, Britain and Japan.
Fiscal deficits are at unsafe levels.
Debt is 30 percentage points of GDP higher than it was at the onset of the Lehman crisis.
The safety buffers are largely exhausted.
“This could be the early stage of a very serious situation,” said Larry Summers, the former US Treasury Secretary.
He compared it to the two spasms of the Asian crisis in the summer of 1997 and again in August 1998.
Ominously, he also compared it to the "heart attack" of August 2007, when credit markets seized up on both sides of the Atlantic and three-month US Treasury yields plummeted to zero..."

Report: 50 North Korean Submarines Vanish From Western Radar: Could They Be Armed With Nukes?
Last week North and South Korea exchanged live artillery fire across the demilitarized zone known as the 39th parallel.
The standoff has led to threats from both sides, with a reported doubling of the military personnel and artillery on the northern side of the border.
While negotiators discuss a settlement behind closed doors, the situation remains tense and both countries are maintaining high alert levels.
This morning, it was reported that some 50 North Korean submarines stationed around the peninsula and visible to Western radar systems suddenly vanished, suggesting that the leader Kim Jong Un is preparing his forces for pre-emptive strike in the event that talks between the two nations fail.
North Korea seems to be stepping up preparations for a military provocation even as ongoing high-level talks seek to avert the worst.
More than 50 North Korean submarines have apparently been sent out on mystery missions, and artillery strength and warfare-readiness along the frontline have been raised to the max, a military source said Sunday..."

"Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said in an interview on Fox News that he “couldn’t find a single person” in Israel who felt the Obama administration hasn’t “turned their back on Israel.”

Appearing on Fox News Sunday this past weekend, Carson was asked by host Chris Wallace to explain his criticism of President Obama and the Iran deal. “Well, all you have to do, Chris, is like I have, go to Israel and talk to average people on all ends of that spectrum,” Carson said. “And I couldn’t find a single person there who didn’t feel that this administration had turned their back on Israel.”

Birthright Citizenship Is a Magnet for Illegal Immigrants, and It Has Real Economic Costs

Birthright Citizenship Is a Magnet for Illegal Immigrants, and It Has Real Economic Costs | National Review Online:
‘Peter and Ellie Yang,” the subjects of Benjamin Carlson’s fascinating new Rolling Stone essay, “Welcome to Maternity Hotel California,” paid $35,000 to have their second child in the United States.
In 2012 Chinese state media reported 10,000 “tourist births” by Chinese couples in the United States; other estimates skew as high as 60,000.
Following Donald Trump’s call for an end to birthright citizenship, and renewed attention on “anchor babies,” Carlson’s exposé on “birth tourism” seems to confirm that the current interpretation of the 14th Amendment works as a magnet for at least some parents across the globe.
But just how big a magnet is it?
According to Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) legal policy analyst Jon Feere, who testified before the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Immigration and Border Security in April, between 350,000 and 400,000 children are born annually to an illegal-alien mother residing in the United States — as many as one in ten births nationwide.
As of 2010, four out of five children of illegal aliens residing in the U.S. were born here — some 4 million kids.
...According to CIS, 71 percent of illegal-alien headed households with children received some sort of welfare in 2009..."

Ted Cruz ON FIRE! Could This be His Best Speech Ever? | The PolitiStick

Ted Cruz ON FIRE! Could This be His Best Speech Ever? | The PolitiStick:

"I’ve heard a lot of great speeches by Senator Ted Cruz, a principled constitutional conservative and the only true orator in the presidential race among the 21 candidates running for president in both parties.

The former national collegiate debate champion is such a constitutional badass that he actually memorized the entire U.S. Constitution — word for word — as a teenager, and has given a lot of memorable speeches, including his historic 21-hour marathon, anti-Obamacare filibuster on the Senate floor and his epic takedown of establishment RINO Senate Majority Leader, Obama’s Mitch McConnell, in which he outed the conniving spineless squish, using the politically avoided “L” word, exposing McConnell’s serial lies to the American public."

Ted Cruz gave an excellent speech!

Did a hacked Hillary email set up the ambush of Ambassador Christopher Stevens?

Blog: Did a hacked Hillary email set up the ambush of Ambassador Christopher Stevens?
Putting together the information now publicly available, the question has to be asked:
Did an ISIS hack of Hillary Clinton’s virtually defenseless home brew server set up the death of Ambassador Christopher Stevens?
ISIS has proven itself adept enough at information technology that a successful hack of Hillary Clinton’s server at her Chappaqua mansion cannot be ruled out, no matter how many Secret Service members stood guard.
Apparently unbeknownst to the former secretary of state who boasted of the server’s security because of the guards outside, it is so easy to hack a garden variety server set up by a mom-and-pop operation that an ISIS  (and Russian intelligence and Chinese and Romanian and many other agencies) hack is well within the realm of possibility.
Now consider what the New York Post reported yesterday, six paragraphs into a story.
Paul Sperry writes:
US intelligence officials so far have determined that at least four — and as many as 305 — of the more than 30,000 e-mails Clinton and her aides have printed out and turned over to investigators were classified at the time they were written.
They include a 2011 message from Clinton’s top aides that contains military intelligence from United States Africa Command gleaned from satellite images of troop movements in Libya, along with the travel and protection plans for Ambassador Christopher Stevens, who was later killed in a terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya.
Another staff e-mail sent to Clinton in 2012 contained investigative data about Benghazi terrorist suspects wanted by the FBI. (emphasis added)
If the travel and protection plans for Ambassador Stevens were known to ISIS on September 10, 2011, then setting up the attack that resulted in his and three other Americans’ deaths would have been considerably aided.

Instead of wasting $$trillions on "green" scams, let's fund something that might actually produce energy-----Making hydrogen fuel from water and visible light at 100 times higher efficiency

Making hydrogen fuel from water and visible light at 100 times higher efficiency | KurzweilAI:

They report in Journal of Physical Chemistry that by absorbing the entire visible light spectrum, they have increased the yield and energy efficiency of creating hydrogen fuel by up to two magnitudes (100 times) greater than previously reported.**
As described in the paper, they used three new techniques to achieve that:
  • “Black titanium dioxide” (with 1 percent platinum) on a silicon dioxide substrate;
  • A “light-diffuse-reflected surface” to trap light;
  • An elevated reaction temperature (280 degrees Celsius).
In addition, the new setup is “convenient for scaling up commercially,” said Ho.
* TiO2 has a relatively large band gap energy (3.0−3.2 eV) and thus it can absorb only ultraviolet (UV) light (about 4% of the total solar energy), leading to a low photoconversion efficiency (less than 2% under AM 1.5 global sunlight illumination).
** The new method achieves a photo hydrogen yield of 497 mmol/h/g and an apparent quantum efficiency of 65.7% for the entire visible light range at 280 °C.

...For Detroiters, the additional money will mean the start of a public bike share program, possibly as early as the spring of 2016.
...It would also offer a low threshold for ridership, helping encourage people who do not normally ride bikes to give it a try, Nuszkowski said.
"I kind of view it as the gateway drug for biking and healthier living in general," she said.

Puerto Rico Plays Chicken With Its Creditors

Puerto Rico Plays Chicken With Its Creditors - WSJ:
"On Sept. 1 the state-owned Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (Prepa) faces a deadline for restructuring more than $8 billion in debt.
If it can’t come to an agreement with creditors, a previous forbearance agreement will expire and the company will face default.
In that event, bondholders could be expected to go to court to begin the process of receivership, as the bond contracts stipulate.
This high-stakes negotiation comes when Puerto Rico is asking Congress to give its municipalities and public agencies access to the chapter 9 bankruptcy protection the 50 states have.
A Prepa default would be disruptive and possibly increase the odds that Congress will agree.
But failure on the part of the utility to negotiate in good faith also could backfire and jeopardize support in Washington for giving Puerto Rico chapter 9 protection.
It could also reduce sympathy on the mainland for the write-down of other Puerto Rico debt issues—which total some $63 billion—that Gov. Alejandro García Padilla says he needs to get the island growing again..."

Liberals outraged Ted Cruz accurately compared Obama to Jimmy Carter - Spokane Conservative | Examiner.com:

"The post also claimed that "the 'weak' Carter brokered the Camp David accords, ending decades of strife between Israel and Egypt. And he got the hostages home from Iran without dropping a single bomb, despite GOP attempts to creit (sic) Reagan for events that occurred before his swearing in."

What the DU poster failed to mention, however, is that the Iran crisis went on for over 440 days. Carter launched a rescue attempt in April 1980, but the effort failed. Eight U.S. servicemen were killed and the operation was called off. The hostages were not released until after Ronald Reagan was sworn into office, despite a December agreement. The embassy in Tehran is now an Islamic cultural center and museum.

Oddly enough, none of the media outlets reporting on the issue questioned the veracity of Cruz's statement. A Google search revealed that all of the reporting was centered on the timing of his comments. In short, Cruz told the truth and the left simply couldn't handle it."

More on the minimum wage-related job losses on the West Coast, and why they might be worse than reported

More on the minimum wage-related job losses on the West Coast, and why they might be worse than reported - AEI | Carpe Diem Blog » AEIdeas:
"Over the last year, three West Coast cities – Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle – have passed $15 an hour minimum wage laws that will be in full effect by 2018 in San Francisco and Seattle and by 2020 in Los Angeles.
On the way to the full $15 an hour, Seattle increased its minimum wage to $11 on April 1 and San Francisco increased its minimum wage to $12.25 on May 1.
In addition, the Los Angeles city council last fall passed a targeted minimum wage of $15.37 an hour for hotel workers that just went into effect on July 1.
What effects are these minimum wage increases having?
As I (and other economists) have reported here, here and here there is already preliminary evidence that the minimum wage hikes in all three cities have had negative employment effects: a loss of 1,300 restaurant jobs in the Seattle area between January and June, a loss of 2,500 restaurant jobs in the San Francisco metro area over the last year, and a loss of 2,200 hotel jobs in the Los Angeles area over the last year.
...Bottom Line:
Economic logic and common sense suggest that employment patterns in the outlying suburban areas of Los Angeles, Seattle and San Francisco, where there was no change in the minimum wage, would more likely track the pattern of jobs in the rest of the states of California (where hotel and restaurant jobs increased) and Washington (where restaurant jobs increased), that those areas would follow the pattern of job losses within the nearby city limits where the minimum wage increased significantly. In that case, the reported hotel jobs lost in LA, and the reported restaurant jobs lost in San Francisco and Seattle, would actually underestimate the true number of jobs lost within the cities of LA, Seattle and San Francisco due to the minimum wage hikes this year.

Global warming: Deceptive temperature record claims

TOM HARRIS: Global warming: Deceptive temperature record claims - Washington Times:
"The U.S. government is at it again, hyping meaningless records in a parameter that does not exist in order to frighten us about something that doesn’t matter.
NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced this week that according to their calculations, July 2015 was the hottest month since instrumental records began in 1880.
NOAA says that the record was set by eight one-hundredths of a degree Celsius over that set in July 1998.
NASA calculates that July 2015 beat what they assert was the previous warmest month (July 2011) by two one-hundredths of a degree.
But government spokespeople rarely mention the inconvenient fact that these records are being set by less than the uncertainty in the statistics.
NOAA claims an uncertainty of 14 one-hundredths of a degree in its temperature averages, or near twice the amount by which they say the record was set.
NASA says that their data is typically accurate to one tenth of a degree, five times the amount by which their new record was set.
So, the new temperature records are meaningless.
Neither agency knows whether a record was set.
Such misrepresentations are now commonplace in NOAA and NASA announcements.
They are regularly proclaiming monthly and yearly records set by less than the uncertainties in the measurements. Scientists within the agencies know that this is dishonest.
They also know that calculating so-called global average temperatures to hundredths of a degree is irrational.
After all, there is very little data for the 70 percent of Earth’s surface that is ocean.
There is also little data for mountainous and desert regions, not to mention the Antarctic.
Much of the coverage is so sparse that NASA is forced to make the ridiculous claim that regions are adequately covered if there is a temperature-sensing station within nearly 750 miles...
In the final analysis, it is no more meaningful to calculate an average temperature for a whole planet than it is to calculate the avera
ge telephone number in the Washington D.C. phone book. Temperature, like viscosity and density, and of course phone numbers, is not something that can be meaningfully averaged.
“Global temperature” does not exist.
...The sad answer will be that it had nothing to do with the realities of science, technology or economics.
The tragic blunder is based on satisfying political expedience for a privileged few, egged on by vested financial interests, and supported by largely uninformed activists granted the media platforms needed to sway public opinion.
As Jay Lehr, science director of the Chicago-based Heartland Institute said, “It is a scam that dwarfs all others that have come before.”"
