Researchers Find Genetic Cause For Alzheimer's, Possible Method To Reverse It - Slashdot

Researchers Find Genetic Cause For Alzheimer's, Possible Method To Reverse It - Slashdot: "Scientists at an independent biomedical research institution have reported a monumental breakthrough:
Image result for Alzheimer's diseaseThe cause of the primary genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, and a possible cure for the disease.
Researchers at Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco identified the primary genetic risk factor for the disease, a gene called apoE4...
Their findings were published this week in the journal Nature Medicine...
By treating human apoE4 neurons with a structure corrector, it eliminated the signs of Alzheimer's disease, restored normal function to the cells and improved cell survival.
The study's senior investigator says he's already working with a San Francisco pharmaceutical startup to develop the approach and move towards clinical trials, adding that "we are working to accelerate the timeline as much as possible.""

Goldman Sachs Analysts Question Whether Curing Patients Is Good for Business:
Image result for miracle cure"“Is curing patients a sustainable business model?” analysts asked in an April 10 report entitled “The Genome Revolution,” which CNBC first reported.
One-and-done cures enabled by gene editing, analyst Salveen Richter wrote in the note to clients this week, are near-miraculous innovations that stand to benefit patients immensely.
But they also present a challenge to business.
“While this proposition carries tremendous value for patients and society, it could represent a challenge for genome medicine developers looking for sustained cash flow,” she wrote.
The trouble is, it’s hard to reap long-term profits when you’re actually curing the patients who would buy your treatment..."

“The evidence of Mrs. Clinton’s guilt of espionage, failure to safeguard state secrets, that’s the 22 or 23 top secret pieces of information that were on her private server. The failure to do that — the evidence of guilt is overwhelming,” Napolitano said.
“The statute of limitations is 10 years. It hasn’t run,” he added."

Mock Indiana? Think again - Chicago Tribune

Mock Indiana? Think again - Chicago Tribune
See the source image"You’ve probably heard the joke about why trees in Illinois lean east — because Indiana sucks.
Trash-talking our neighbor, or several of them, is the standard response from defenders of Illinois’ embarrassing political status quo.

  • Yes, Indiana has a funded, stable pension system.
  • Yes, Indiana keeps local governments accountable with effective property tax caps.
  • Yes, Indiana pays its bills on time.

But, hey, Hoosiers are all a bunch of hicks so who cares?
Instead of following Indiana’s example, Illinois taxpayers have accepted the unacceptable.
We rationalize the irrational.
We wear state government chicanery like a badge of honor.
...Indiana lawmakers are paid a base salary of $25,435 compared with roughly $68,000 in Illinois.
...Before we ended our conversation, Shabazz added this observation: “State government unions are not as powerful in Indiana as they are in Illinois.
If I had to compare the two, I would say Illinois is an example of what happens when you let government unions get out of control.”...

The deaths of 76 Branch Davidians in April 1993 could have been avoided – so why didn't anyone care?
"Twenty-five years ago, on February 28, 1993, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents attempted to execute a “dynamic entry” into the home of a religious community at Mount Carmel, a property 10 miles east of Waco, Texas.
...On March 1, 1993, FBI agents took control of the property, and ended up presiding over what became a 51-day siege.
On April 19, the siege ended in a second tragedy when FBI agents carried out a tank and tear gas assault, which culminated in a massive fire.
Seventy-six Branch Davidians, including 20 children and two miscarried babies, died.
Nine Branch Davidians escaped the fire.
...Immediately after the fire, most Americans took the side of the FBI.
A CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll found that 73 percent of Americans thought that the FBI’s use of tear gas was “responsible.”
Only 13 percent thought the FBI had acted too soon, while 57 percent believed it was “not soon enough.”...

Woman guilty of 'racist' Snap Dogg rap lyric Instagram post - BBC News:
"A teenager who posted rap lyrics which included racist language on Instagram has been found guilty of sending a grossly offensive message.
Chelsea Russell, 19, from Liverpool posted the lyric from Snap Dogg's I'm Trippin' to pay tribute to a boy who died in a road crash, a court heard.

...Liverpool Justice Centre, sitting at Sefton Magistrates' Court, heard Russell posted the lyrics to her account after the death of a 13-year-old in a road accident in 2017, the Crown Prosecution Service said.
...Prosecutor Angela Conlan said Russell's defence also argued her profile "wasn't public", but it had been proved in court that anyone could access it and "see the offensive language".
She said prosecutors also "sourced case law that showed that posting the profile on her account constituted sending it and making it public".
Russell was found guilty of sending a grossly offensive message by a public communication.
She was given an eight-week community order, placed on an eight-week curfew and told to pay costs of £500 and an £85 victim surcharge."

Why ‘Implicit Bias Training’ Makes No Sense | Minding The Campus

Why ‘Implicit Bias Training’ Makes No Sense | Minding The Campus
"Does it make sense for Starbucks to put its workforce through “implicit bias training”?
See the source imageMaybe as a public relations gesture to apologize for the arrest of two peaceful black men who were there for a meeting without buying anything at a Philadelphia Starbucks and then asking to use the restroom.
But if the company’s goal is to remove hidden prejudice from its employees’ minds, this “training” makes no sense at all.
The reason: despite many attempts to define it, no one knows what “implicit bias” is, and so no one has any idea what “training” might be useful to combat it.
...Much of the time the term is thrown around, even in scientific articles, without being defined.
When it is defined, different people define it differently.
Yet training has been instituted at many colleges, universities, and corporations around the country...
What Should Starbucks Do to Solve an Actual Problem?
...First, they need to figure out what the problem really is.
With thousands of stores and millions of social interactions a year, some may go bad sometimes..."

Inconvenient weather fact for Earth Day: the frequency of violent tornadoes fell to a record low in 2017-Carpe Diem - AEI

Read it all!
"...For now, in preparation for Earth Day, let me present an “inconvenient weather fact” displayed graphically above of the annual US tornado count from 1954 to 2017 based on data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Centers for Environmental Information.

In 2017, there were only 15 tornadoes in the US that registered in the strong to violent categories of F3, F4 or F5 (there were 13 F3 tornadoes, 2 F4s, and no F5s), which was the fewest annual number of F3+ tornadoes in more than 60 years going back to 1954 when NOAA started collecting annual US tornado data, and below the previous record low count of 17 F3+ tornadoes in 1987...
As James Taylor wrote in Forbes in 2012 (five years before the record-setting low last year):
Tornadoes are becoming less frequent and less severe as our planet modestly warms. Yet global warming alarmists focus attention on the few tornadoes that still do occur and say that global warming is causing these increasingly rare tornadoes.
