The eight defendants appeared before a judge Thursday and scheduled to face trial starting Feb. 19, the report said."

Entire class punished for 'microaggressive' comments

Entire class punished for 'microaggressive' comments:
  • Three Columbia University professors recently described how an entire class was punished after some students used “microaggressive” language in an online chat.
  • After requiring students to read two articles on microaggressions and "racial identity," the instructors separated the white students from the "People of the Global Majority" for a debriefing.
...Matthea Marquart, who teaches online classes for graduate students studying social work, noticed that some students used unspecified “racially microaggressive” language during the live chat of a recent online class..."

"WELL, IT’S AN EXAMPLE OF WHY, ANYWAY: Michael Wolff’s ‘Fire and Fury’ is why Americans don’t trust the media.
Wolff’s account of the White House is, however, literally unbelievable. His account implies that President Trump did not know who John Boehner was at a time when Boehner and Trump were frequent golfing buddies. Multiple members of the White House have disputed what he quoted them saying, while the way that Wolff’s account is written makes it impossible for readers to discern if Wolff was actually there or is recreating conversations based on interviews with unnamed sources. Wolff recreates situations that some subjects have disputed ever occurred... But the way that Wolff has apparently played fast and loose with quotes, facts, and more in his work of nonfiction is a reason that can be used to dismiss his entire account.
"Personally, I’m more and more inclined to judge Trump by what he actually does in office, not by what he allegedly says behind the scenes. And that’s looking pretty good."--Posted by Glenn Reynolds at 8:30 am

Why Doesn't Aid Work? | Cato Unbound

Why Doesn't Aid Work? | Cato Unbound:
See the source image"...UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown recently gave a compassionate speech about the tragedy of extreme poverty afflicting billions of people, with millions of children dying from easily preventable diseases.
...However, Gordon Brown was silent about the other tragedy of the world’s poor.
This is the tragedy in which the West already spent $2.3 trillion on foreign aid over the last 5 decades and still had not managed to get 12-cent medicines to children to prevent half of all malaria deaths.
...Economic development happens, not through aid, but through the homegrown efforts of entrepreneurs and social and political reformers.
While the West was agonizing over a few tens of billion dollars in aid, the citizens of India and China raised their own incomes by $715 billion by their own efforts in free markets.
Once aid agencies realize that aid CANNOT achieve general economic and political development, they could start concentrating on fixing the system that fails to get 12-cent medicines to malaria victims..."

The suit says BP, Chevron, Conoco-Phillips, ExxonMobil, and Royal Dutch Shell are responsible for 11 percent of the greenhouse gases that have accumulated in the atmosphere.
The plaintiffs want to "shift the costs of protecting the City from climate change impacts back onto the companies that have done nearly all they could to create this existential threat."...

“Just go to a random [Trump] tweet and just look at the followers. They’ll all be like, guns, God, ‘Merica, and with the American flag and the cross,” declared Singh, who was secretly recorded by Project Veritas reporters. “Like, who says that? Who talks like that? It’s for sure a bot.”
After being asked whether he could get rid of the accounts, he replied, “Yeah. You just delete them, but, like, the problem is there are hundreds of thousands of them, so you’ve got to, like, write algorithms that do it for you.”"
