Donald Trump hails economy after first year - Washington Times
Donald Trump hails economy after first year - Washington Times:
"President Trump marks his first year in office Saturday riding a wave of strong economic news, including a record-high stock market, a low unemployment rate and computer giant Apple’s decision to bring back hundreds of billions of dollars from overseas and create 20,000 U.S. jobs, spurred by Republican tax cuts.
For the past year, Mr. Trump has been telling voters that his recipe of less regulation and lower taxes would be “rocket fuel” for employers.
One year since Mr. Trump’s inauguration, it looks very much like the economy is lifting off."

Damning!-----Michigan State University doctor Larry Nassar surrounded by enablers as he abused athletes- ESPN
Michigan State University doctor Larry Nassar surrounded by enablers as he abused athletes- ESPN: "JANE REMEMBERS THE linoleum floor in the bathroom of Larry Nassar's apartment.
She remembers feeling strange as he walked in and handed her gymnastics magazines to read as she lay fully naked in his bathtub.
She was 12 or 13; she can't recall exactly.
Nassar, no older than 30 and putting the finishing touches on his medical degree, had called Jane's mother days before, explaining he was doing research about gymnasts' flexibility and wanted her daughter's help.
On the day Jane was to participate, her mother was out of town, so a neighbor dropped her off, alone, at Nassar's one-bedroom apartment a few blocks from the Michigan State University campus.
Once inside, Nassar had Jane do splits on his living room floor while she wore a gymnastics leotard.
"He measured the flexibility, how far your crotch came off the floor when you did the splits," Jane, now 38, recalls."

Truth!-----Trump's Basic Instincts About the Political War Are Essentially Right, and The Establishment's Sense of It Is Essentially Wrong-----Ace of Spades HQ
Ace of Spades HQ:
"Trump's Basic Instincts About the Political War Are Essentially Right, and The Establishment's Sense of It Is Essentially Wrong
Very good piece by Joe Katzman for the Daily Caller.
"Short version:
The left's method works much better than the right's.
It always has and it always will.
Because most people don't care about politics all that much -- but nearly everyone (except for the crankiest of contrarians, including some of the current assembled company) cares about their social status.
Having higher social status gets you invites to the Cocktail Party Circuit, which is a real thing, defined broadly (and metaphorically) enough.
It makes you datable, it makes you "clubbable," as the old term went..."

"Trump's Basic Instincts About the Political War Are Essentially Right, and The Establishment's Sense of It Is Essentially Wrong
Very good piece by Joe Katzman for the Daily Caller.
"Short version:
- The right attempts political persuasion.
- The left, on the other hand, attempts social persuasion -- basically seizing the commanding heights of culture-making institutions and then deciding that espousing some political claims (being pro-gay-marriage) increase social status and that espousing other political claims (being against gay marriage) decrease social status and, indeed, make one a social pariah, fit for ostracism, mass mockery, and internal exile.
The left's method works much better than the right's.
It always has and it always will.

New York court breaks rules, refuses investigation into James Comey - Washington Times
New York court breaks rules, refuses investigation into James Comey - Washington Times:
"In the case of Mr. Comey, Mr. Clevenger says he broke ethics rules by apparently leaking classified information to a professor and friend of his in order to shape the narrative surrounding his interactions with and later firing by President Trump.
“I’m disgusted but not surprised that a grievance committee would try to whitewash serious crimes by politically-powerful colleagues,” Mr. Clevenger said after receiving New York’s rejection. “I’ve seen it all over the country, in Republican and Democratic jurisdictions alike. If you are a lawyer with the right political connections, you can get away with almost anything.”"

“Harvey’s Concern Was Who Did Him In”: Inside Harvey Weinstein’s Frantic Final Days | Vanity Fair:
"Before the story of his alleged abuses broke in October, Harvey Weinstein hunkered down in his Tribeca bunker—even as the producer refused to believe the end was near.
...At first, the producer hewed to a strategy that, in the past, had served him well.
He enlisted marquee attorneys to defend him, in this case assembling a legal dream team that eventually came to include renowned litigator David Boies, celebrity lawyer Lisa Bloom (the daughter of high-profile attorney Gloria Allred), and Charles Harder, who had filed the lawsuit that put Gawker out of business.
Using combative advocacy for cover, Weinstein also deployed former intelligence operatives and a private-security firm, who were tasked with investigating his potential accusers, journalists reporting the story, and those who might be ratting him out to the press..."

No One Wants Your Used Clothes Anymore - Bloomberg
No One Wants Your Used Clothes Anymore
A once-virtuous cycle is breaking down.
What now?
For decades, the donation bin has offered consumers in rich countries a guilt-free way to unload their old clothing.
In a virtuous and profitable cycle, a global network of traders would collect these garments, grade them, and transport them around the world to be recycled, worn again, or turned into rags and stuffing.
Now that cycle is breaking down.
Fashion trends are accelerating, new clothes are becoming as cheap as used ones, and poor countries are turning their backs on the secondhand trade.
Without significant changes in the way that clothes are made and marketed, this could add up to an environmental disaster in the making.
...Between 2000 and 2015, global clothing production doubled, while the average number of times that a garment was worn before disposal declined by 36 percent.
In China, it declined by 70 percent.
The rise of "fast fashion" is thus creating a bleak scenario: The tide of secondhand clothes keeps growing even as the markets to reuse them are disappearing.
From an environmental standpoint, that's a big problem.
Already, the textile industry accounts for more greenhouse-gas emissions than all international flights and maritime shipping combined; as recycling markets break down, its contribution could soar..."

Coast Guard wants cruise missiles on Arctic icebreakers - Washington Times:
"Analysts say U.S. and Russian military strategists are responding to the evolving challenge of the Arctic — and the possibility that it could soon become much more valuable territory economically and militarily.
The glacial territories in the Arctic remain “the quickest route between Russia and the U.S. It is even the quickest route between North Korea and the U.S.,” said Bryan Clark, former special assistant to the chief of naval operations.
“There are a fair amount of military operations that happen in and around the Arctic,” said Mr. Clark, now a senior fellow at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments. In any international conflict involving the U.S., Russia or other state actors, “the Arctic would be at play.”"
