Giant surprise!

Daytime TV tied to poorer mental scores in elderly: "Older women who say talk shows and soap operas are their favorite TV programs tend to score more poorly on tests of memory, attention and other cognitive skills, researchers reported Monday.
That doesn't mean that daytime television is a brain drain, they say, since it's not clear that there's a direct relationship between the two."
Could it be that stupid people watch these shows? What a cruel thing to posit....

Excellent analysis on Senate races

Democratic prospects in Senate looking up - 03/18/06 - The Detroit News: "It wasn't too long ago that Democratic leader Harry Reid mused aloud how it would take a miracle for his party to gain a 50-50 tie in the Senate, much less wrest control from Republicans this fall."

good for some, not others?

West Michigan housing surplus good for some, not others: "A much different story for builders, however."

Danger!

WZZM 13 Grand Rapids - Prepare for powerful new Internet attacks: "The chief security officer for VeriSign Incorporated says security researchers are preparing for 'the Katrina of Internet storms.'

There's a new kind of unusually powerful Internet attack possible. It can overwhelm popular Web sites and disrupt e-mails by exploiting the computers that help manage global Internet traffic."

This is news?

Scandal shakes public radio: "An internal audit also found sloppy recordkeeping, excessive bonuses and expense-account fraud that totaled more than $50,000 from July 2001 to December 2005, said Timothy Slottow, University of Michigan's chief financial officer. U-M owns and runs Michigan Public Media."
I thought that was normal at NPR/PBS...

Weber State?

Spartans' history of first-round flops: "Like Weber State and Nevada before it, George Mason will forever evoke painful memories for Michigan State.

When those past double-digit seeds defeated MSU in the first round of the NCAA tournament - Weber State in 1995 and Nevada in 2004 - most MSU fans couldn't find those schools on a map if you spotted them the state"

Big spender?

Instapundit.com -: "At any rate, given that Ms Noonan believes, for some reason, that Ronald Reagan was a conservative and George W. Bush isn't, it's perhaps helpful to just compare the two: when Ronald Reagan left office in 1988 he was dunning us 18.1% of GDP to pay for a federal government that spent 21.2% of GDP. In 2004, the last year for which I could find numbers, George W. Bush had lowered our tax burden to 16.3% of GDP-- a level last reached in 1959--to pay for a government that spent 19.8 of GDP. "

Will the democrats support this?

Lawmaker urges Congress to exclude illegal residents from count: "A state lawmaker is joining calls at the federal level to ensure that congressional seats are apportioned according to the number of legal citizens in each state.
Senator Jud Gilbert today introduced a resolution urging Congress to send the states a constitutional amendment to address the issue."
Don't let anyone ever tell you that there's no difference between Republicans and Democrats.

Our tax dollars at work?

WZZM 13 Grand Rapids - Study: Have Unemployment Benefits, Be Unemployed Longer: "A new report says people who have unemployment stay without work for 21 weeks on average, compared to eight weeks for people who don't get it."?
"A new report" has Ch 13 "shocked". We need a study to tell us what we already know?

Serious charge, no proof.

The Beaufort Gazette: Justice Ginsburg reveals details of threat: "Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said she and former Justice Sandra Day O'Connor have been the targets of death threats from the 'irrational fringe' of society, people apparently spurred by Republican criticism of the high court."
Impeach this liar! For a sitting Supreme Court Judge to say this is slander..... oops, she didn't say that? The newspaper just made it up? Big surprise.....

These guys will get the job done!

Developers planning a downtown RV park: "Although the ambitious Fisherman's Landing relocation plan of four years ago never took place, some vestiges of it might soon be coming to the shore of Muskegon Lake after all.
John Bultema II and George Bailey, partners in GLM Properties, have unveiled plans for a new lakefront resort catering to recreational vehicle campers. "
The best news to hit Muskegon in years!

Refreshing!

Jessica Simpson snubs President Bush - Celebrity News - MSNBC.com: "Concerned about politicizing her favorite charity, singer-actress Jessica Simpson Wednesday turned down a invitation to meet with President Bush, a snub that left Republicans dismayed."
Maybe she's brighter than we thought. Celebrities and politics are a lousy mix.

Can't we all just get along?

Suspects ready to die for '05 Bali blasts : "Three militants awaiting trial for their alleged role in last year's Bali bombings said Wednesday they considered themselves martyrs and are ready to die."

Why the news blackout?

Nothing new since Friday and many people know what's going on. Has the GR Catholic Diocese brought the hammer down?
WZZM 13 Grand Rapids - Missing money in Muskegon County: "Federal authorities are working with officials from the Grand Rapids Catholic Diocese to find out what happened to some missing money.

It involves several Catholic institutions in Muskegon County.

Catholic Social Services, St. Francis De Sales Church, Muskegon Family Care and the Greater Muskegon Catholic Schools Foundation are all missing money.

Diocese officials won't say how much money is missing but believe it is a large amount. Officials will also not say what they think happened to it.

A spokesperson for the Diocese says clients of these organizations and the congregation at the church should not be affected by the missing money. "

DRUDGE REPORT 2006

If this is real, why are Democrats focusing on Bush?

ABC News: Renowned Bird Flu Expert Warns: Be Prepared: "'If bird flu becomes not bird flu but mutates into a form that can be transmitted between humans, we could then have a spread like wildfire across the globe,' Moscona said."
I thought their new focus was on "winning" slogans like "there's a better way", or "we can do better", or "Gore in '08!".

Maybe they could try "The Birds is Coming!....(no reflection on Sen. Byrd who, as a member of the KKK, made many black folks in south fear that "the Byrd're coming....)

Myths of Iraq

RealClearPolitics - Articles - Myths of Iraq: "During a recent visit to Baghdad, I saw an enormous failure. On the part of our media. The reality in the streets, day after day, bore little resemblance to the sensational claims of civil war and disaster in the headlines."

(it can't be) Bush's Fault!

Latest Business News and Financial Information Reuters.com: "U.S. stocks rose sharply on Tuesday, with the Dow and S&P 500 indexes hitting their highest in nearly five years as U.S. Treasury yields fell and record profit from Goldman Sachs Group Inc. boosted shares of financial companies."

Interesting conversion

SOXBLOG: " While Europe Slept by Bruce Bawer.
Bawer first achieved a measure of fame for 1998s "Stealing Jesus" which was a scathing indictment of America's religious right. In "Stealing Jesus", Bawer confessed such fear of the "claustrophobic narrowness" of America's fundamentalist Christians that he felt it necessary for him and his male partner to flee the country for the more friendly confines of Europe.

Unlike the Hollywood or academic glitterati who habitually make such threats, Bawer meant what he said and did indeed uproot himself to Europe. Showing an intellectual honesty too rare among self-styled intellectuals regardless of their politics, Bawer has discovered that Europe's fundamentalists are a lot worse and a lot more dangerous than America's even in their most fervent mode. Bawer doesn't flinch from the fact that Europe's fundamentalists are Muslims.

That's right. you've read correctly. An American intellectual has written a book that not only decries radical Islam while identifying the clear and present danger that it is, he went so far as to chastise himself for confusing a phantom menace (America's Christians) with the real deal. Bawer seems to see things clearly"

The MSM never knew?

Military Shuns Many Of Recruiting Age: "(AP) WASHINGTON Uncle Sam wants YOU, that famous Army recruiting poster says. But does he really? Not if you're a Ritalin-taking, overweight, Generation Y couch potato or some combination of the above."
The ignorance of the leftist media never ceases to stun. They are shocked, shocked... that our military has standards? mutter...mutter..mutter....
And how'bout this gem from acadamea"

Some experts are skeptical.
Previous Defense Department studies have found that 75 percent of young people are ineligible for military service, noted Charles Moskos of Northwestern University. While the professor emeritus who specializes in military sociology says it is "a baloney number," he acknowledges he has no figures to counter it.
Gotta love "skeptical experts" without a clue.......
