Kruse Kronicle: Taxing Questions

Kruse Kronicle: Taxing Questions: "Finally, keep in mind the New York Times article two weeks a ago that pointed out that while the bottom quintile has $9,974 in income per household a year it spends $18,153. That means non-cash assistance (as well draws on savings in the case of retired or unemployed payers) nearly doubles the actual income of the bottom quintile.
Rather than populist outcry over 'tax cuts for the wealthy,' maybe we need to look at the whole package of consequences that come from tax policy. Is the final objective really to have all taxes paid by the top 1% of society?"

Bummer dude!

Fallen girl's courage had huge effect on Neitzel

Greenandwhite.com: Fallen girl's courage had huge effect on Neitzel: "Just like every other Saturday in the fall, 11-year-old Natalie Freiburger of Charlotte was playing soccer with her youth team.
Two days later, she was diagnosed with what her mother described as 'a rare and aggressive form of ovarian cancer.'"...
Natalie was such a Neitzel fan, that after she was diagnosed - and got her head shaved - she had a picture taken of herself to emulate a picture of Neitzel pumping his fists in an MSU win over Wisconsin last season.
The pictures hung side by side, on the door of her hospital room.
Neitzel and Natalie began communicating frequently on the Web page and via e-mail. He visited her on Christmas Eve, gave her a hat and a Sparty doll, let her wear his letter jacket.
She told him she had one concern - how her parents would be able to cope with her death. That struck Neitzel, as it had her parents.
"One night, her father was crying on the end of her bed and she said, 'It's OK, Dad, I'm going to be all right,' "

District may seek bond issue for $8.47 million in upgrades - mlive.com

District may seek bond issue for $8.47 million in upgrades - mlive.com: "The district is finishing up $4.2 million in improvements to security, technology -- including computers, video equipment and a phone system -- and transportation. The improvements are financed by a 0.65-mill, 10-year tax hike approved by voters in 2005.
At that same time, voters approved a 1-mill, 10-year sinking fund for about $10 million in capital improvements, such as roofs, boilers and parking lots.
Babbitt said there are still upgrades and enhancements that are needed. They include safety and security, such as more security cameras and keyless entry doors; buses; technology upgrades; a new performing arts classroom at the middle school; and at the high school, modernizing and expanding the 50-year-old main gymnasium, and installing artificial turf at the stadium.
These improvements could be done without asking voters to approve a bond, but would put immense pressure on the general fund, and couldn't be done without 'dramatic' cuts to programs, he said."
