"I consider myself to be relatively well-read on the matter, and I’ve still come down on the skeptical side, because there are aspects of the issue that don’t make a lot of sense to me. Though I confess to have written none-too-reverentially on the subject, I want to try to put all that aside and ask ten serious questions to which I have been unable to find definitive answers:"

The Real 'Torture' Disgrace

The Real 'Torture' Disgrace
"As Mr. Levin put it in laying on his innuendo this week, a commission 'may or may not lead to indictments or civil action.' It will also encourage some grandstanding foreign prosecutor to arrest Mr. Rumsfeld and other Bush officials like Pinochet if they ever dare to leave the U.S. Why John McCain endorsed this Levin gambit is the kind of mystery that has defined, and damaged, his career. We hope other Republicans push back.
Mr. Levin claims that Bush interrogation programs 'damaged our ability to collect accurate intelligence that could save lives.' The truth is closer to the opposite. The second-guessing of Democrats is likely to lead to a risk-averse mindset at the CIA and elsewhere that compromises the ability of terror fighters to break the next KSM. The political winds always shift, but terrorists are as dangerous as ever."

The Tax Foundation - State Sales, Gasoline, Cigarette, and Alcohol Tax Rates by State, 2000-2008:

Black named to road commission

Black named to road commission
"Ironically, Black now believes there may be a need for a countywide millage election to properly fund road maintenance and improvements. That's because the road commission gets most of its funding from the state, and that funding has been shrinking with each passing year.
'In this day and age, asking for a millage would be tough, to say the least,' Black said. 'It would have to be done by educating people about the need."

Right.

We po folks don't got da smarts to no we gotta give the man mo of our money.

Edjukation is what we need.....

Right.

Proposed gas tax hike riles gas station owners

Proposed gas tax hike riles gas station owners
"A proposed gasoline tax hike to fix the state's crumbling roads and bridges is pitting road builders against gasoline station owners, who say it would give Michigan the highest tax in the nation.
With the proposed hike -- which would switch from a fixed 19 cents per gallon to an 18 percent tax on the wholesale price of gas -- being considered by the lame duck state Legislature, Michigan would jump ahead of California, the nation's current No. 1, according to station owners.
Michigan now has the nation's fifth-highest gasoline tax, including state and federal taxes, at 59.4 cents a gallon. California's is 67.1 cents."

The genesis of the $8.5 million parking ramp?

http://downtownmuskegon.org/recentnews-may09-07.shtml

(thanks to ClassifiedAd on the http://www.mlive.com/forums/muskegon/ Muskegon forum!)

Kind of amazing how $2.2 million morphs into $8.5 million in a real estate deflation..... ain't it?

more to come!

"Commission moves ahead on downtown parking ramp

By Steve GunnMuskegon Chronicle Reporter
Muskegon
County Commissioner Bill Gill may never like the idea, but his colleagues on the county board are determined to use $2.2 million in federal funds to build a new parking ramp on Third Street in downtown Muskegon."

Chrysler closing all 30 plants for one month
"Chrysler LLC said Wednesday that it is closing all 30 of its manufacturing plants for a month starting Friday as it seeks to counter the most severe downturn in U.S. auto sales in more than two decades."

Understand that this company is owned by a hedge fund!

Muskegon's $8.5 million boondoggle?

Does anyone know about the plan to demolish the current downtown bus station and replace it with a $8.5 million transit/parking ramp across from the Holiday Inn?

Parking ramps seem to be bulldozed in Muskegon, if you follow our city father's RECENT actions.

Why a new parking ramp 200 yards from the one we just tore down?

Granholm says she is not interested in Obama cabinet position

Granholm says she is not interested in Obama cabinet position
"'The governor has made it clear she does not want to be considered for an appointment at this time,' said Liz Boyd, a Granholm spokeswoman. 'Whether she is being vetted or has been vetted is immaterial. What she really is interested in is working on challenges facing our state, namely growing the economy and creating jobs.'"

Yeah right!

Serious "duh"!

She was "vetted" and stinko!!!!!! Worst state in the USA!

I'm thinking Blago has the same vetting.

Gotta love our "unbiased" media.

Schools offers buyouts to highest-paid teachers
"Even if several teachers accept a new buyout option, Coopersville Schools likely will eliminate 4 1/2 staff positions next school year to stabilize a shaky financial forecast.
The school board Monday approved a voluntary separation plan that allows teachers making more than $61,000 in base salary to resign or retire and collect $54,000 afterward. Teachers making at least $75,000 would collect $60,000."

Scientists Call AP Report on Global Warming 'Hysteria'
"'The mean global temperature, at least as measured by satellite, is now the same as it was in the year 1980. In the last couple of years sea level has stopped rising. Hurricane and cyclone activity in the northern hemisphere is at a 24-year low and sea ice globally is also the same as it was in 1980.'
Deming said the article is further evidence of the media's decision to talk about global warming as fact, despite what he says is a lack of evidence.
'Reporters, as I understand reporters, are supposed to report facts,'Deming said. 'What he's doing here is he's writing a polemic and reporting it as fact, and that's not right. It's not reporting. It's propaganda."

Not only would you be giving business to a group of hard-working students with disabilities, but you'd also be benefiting the Noah Project animal shelter and supporting recycling to boot.

Gov. David Paterson unveils dire New York State budget that includes new taxes, layoffs and cuts

Gov. David Paterson unveils dire New York State budget that includes new taxes, layoffs and cuts
"it's the $4 billion in new fees and taxes that are sure to aggravate everyday New Yorkers, who would be paying more for a host of services:
An 'iPod tax' that charges state and local sales tax for 'digitally delivered entertainment services' - in other words, that new Beyonce song you download.
State sales tax at movie theaters, sporting events, taxis, buses, limousines and cable and satellite TV and radio.
Costlier driving with the repeal of the 8-cents-per-gallon sales tax cap on motor and diesel motor fuel, plus and increase in the auto rental tax.
Tuition increases at SUNY and CUNY, $620 and $600 a year respectively.
A 50 cent tax on cigars. The current tax is equal to 37% of the wholesale price, or 34 cents a cigar.
No more sales tax break on clothes and shoes worth $110 or less, except during two weeks a year.
Higher taxes on wine, beer and flavored malt beverages. He would also impose an 18% tax on non-nutritional drinks like soda.
The rich would pay more for luxury items through an additional 5% tax imposed on cars costing more than $60,000, aircraft costing more than $500,000, yachts costing at least $200,000 and jewelry and furs costing in excess of $20,000.
In addition, a host of a fees, including those related to motor vehicle licensing and registration, parks and auto insurance, would go up, as would various state-imposed fines.
Even with the cuts, the 2009-10 budget would increase"

Survey supports minimum GPA for MHS athletes

Survey supports minimum GPA for MHS athletes
"A survey of parents, students, staff, coaches and community members showed 80 percent support a minimum GPA. Dissatisfaction with the proposal among 27 surveyed coaches -- fewer than half like the idea -- likely brought down the overall percentage of support.
Although the idea has the support of the community, the school board is still grappling with implementing a minimum GPA. Among their concerns are whether it should be applied to students in all extracurricular activities and how to pay for tutoring those who struggle to meet the GPA.

Imagine a school system that will allow its students to fail to be educated and still not help them because they are athletes.

Don't imagine!

SEC chairman says agency failed to probe Madoff

SEC chairman says agency failed to probe Madoff
"Securities and Exchange Commission chairman Christopher Cox said Tuesday his agency repeatedly failed for at least a decade to pursue allegations of wrongdoing by Wall Street figure Bernard L. Madoff, the alleged perpetrator of a $50 billion Ponzi scheme.
Cox ordered the SEC's inspector general to look into the failure, saying the agency's staff had never brought the Madoff matter to the attention of commissioners after relying on information voluntarily produced by Madoff and his firm."

Why do any of these SEC employees keep their jobs?

Unbuckled motorist faces cocaine charge

Doh!

Unbuckled motorist faces cocaine charge
"A motorist learned over the weekend that not wearing a seat belt can lead to further difficulties with police -- especially if officers report finding drugs and money in your car.
A 35-year-old Muskegon man was pulled over by police at 9:40 p.m. Friday on the exit ramp from I-96 to Airline Road. 'He was stopped for not wearing a seat belt,' said Lt. Jon Gale.
Police then discovered he was wanted on a parole violation warrant and had been driving without a license. He was told he was under arrest.
But it was the package containing 71 grams of suspected powder cocaine on the passenger seat that landed the driver in even more trouble, according to police. A scale was found near the cocaine.
In addition, $3,800 cash had been shoved into a purse that was near the cocaine, Gale said. The purse belonged to a female passenger who later was released from custody.
'The subject admitted to selling cocaine and that it (the drug found on the passenger seat) was his,' Gale said.
The man was lodged at the Muskegon County Jail for possession with intent to deliver cocaine as well as the warrant and license offense. Arraignment was pending Monday morning."

Amazon lights!

The Amazon building has now shut off its rooftop lights.

I guess it's an improvement.....

Better than the "A_AZ_N" embarrassment but it sure would be interesting to know who owns, manages and makes the decisions at that important Muskegon location.

Ain't taxpayer subsidized housing great!

Between his tax problems and his legal battle with his wife for the custody of his daughter, these are hard times for the action movie star who finds that even Steven Seagal has pinched a role from him! In JCVD, Jean-Claude Van Damme returns to the country of his birth to seek the peace and tranquility he can no longer enjoy in the United States.

Jean-Claude Van Damme plays himself in this meta crime comedy that finds him garnering mores headlines than he's had in years after stumbling into an in-progress bank heist. Down and out, with only straight-to-DVD titles under his belt, and a recent job lost out to fellow has-been, Steven Seagal, the aging action star returns to Belgium a broken man fresh from losing a custody case for his daughter in Hollywood. Theater director Caden Cotard is mounting a new play. Fresh off of a successful production of Death of a Salesman, he has traded in the suburban blue-hairs and regional theater of Schenectady for the cultured audiences and bright footlights of Broadway. Armed with a MacArthur grant and determined to create a piece of brutal realism and honesty, something into which he can put his whole self, he gathers an ensemble cast into a warehouse in Manhattan's theater district. He directs them in a celebration of the mundane, instructing each to live out their constructed lives in a small mockup of the city outside. As the city inside the warehouse grows, Caden's own life veers wildly off the tracks. The shadow of his ex-wife Adele, a celebrated painter who left him years ago for Germany's art scene, sneers at him from every corner. Somewhere in Berlin, his daughter Olive is growing up under the questionable guidance of Adele's friend, Maria. He's helplessly driving his marriage to actress Claire into the ground. Sammy Barnathan, the actor Caden has hired to play himself within the play, is a bit too perfect for the part, and is making it difficult for Caden to revive his relationship with the alluringly candid Hazel. Meanwhile, his therapist, Madeline Gravis, is better at plugging her best-seller than she is at counseling him. His is second daughter, Ariel, is retarded. And a mysterious condition is systematically shutting down each of his autonomic functions, one by one. As the years rapidly pass, Caden buries himself deeper into his masterpiece. Populating the cast and crew with doppelgangers, he steadily blurs the line between the world of the play and that of his own deteriorating reality. As he pushes the limits of his relationships, both personally and professionally, a change in creative direction arrives in Millicent Weems, a celebrated theater actress who may offer Caden the break he needs.

An adolescent boy from a most idiosyncratic family attempts to adjust to his new neighborhood as his sixteenth birthday looms on the horizon in this family drama from director Elissa Down. Thomas is about to turn sixteen, and as if adjusting to a new neighborhood, a new school, and new friends isn't enough for a teenage boy to contend with, his family is about as unpredictable as they come. His autistic older brother Charlie suffers from ADS syndrome, and attends a special school on the days that he actually chooses to go. His father Simon is an enormous cricket fan who is prone to holding intense discussions with his teddy bear, and his mother Maggie is a free spirit who sleeps with pretty much whomever she pleases. Recently, Thomas' mother revealed that she is pregnant. As a result, Thomas finds himself looking after Charlie much more frequently than usual. When Charlie strips half-naked and dashes into the neighbor's house in search of a bathroom, Thomas storms in after him and encounters pretty classmate Jackie - who is currently attempting to take a shower. Mortified, Thomas begins to realize that he might not be capable of caring for Charlie. Later at school, Thomas realizes that he'll have to learn to swim before he earns his lifesaving badge. Of course every student in class needs to have a partner, and it just so happens that Thomas' partner is a pretty fellow pupil named Jackie.

Ammo Ban And Registration Proposal Getting Fresh Look
"so-called “encoded ammunition” or “serialized ammunition” bills would require ammunition manufacturers to engrave a serial number on the base of the bullet and the inside of the cartridge casing of each round of ammunition for popular sporting caliber center-fire rifles, all center-fire pistols, all .22 rimfire rifles and pistols, and all 12 gauge shotguns.

In all but one of the bills, people would be required to forfeit all personally owned non-“encoded” ammunition.

After a certain date, it would be illegal to possess non-“encoded” ammunition. Reloading would be rendered illegal."

Has the 401(k) failed?

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL ASKS: Has the 401(k) failed?
"I don’t think 401(k)s have done any worse than defined-benefit plans — those are in terrible shape too, as a bit of poking around at PensionTsunami.com will illustrate — but one advantage of 401(k) plans and the like (including 403(b)s, 457s, SEPs, etc.) is that they’re transparent. When your 401(K) balance drops by 30-40% you know your retirement is in trouble; when public (or corporate) pension funds take a similar hit we get bland reassurances that everything’s okay. Isn’t it better to know where things stand?"

"Here in New York, the hostages go by different names, but serve the same function. They turn up without fail whenever the city is running short of money: library hours, firehouses, police officers, class sizes, day care centers, garbage pickup, health clinics. As perennial hostages to budget-making, these basic services, public servants and municipal buildings are captive to the current fiscal crisis.
Not so for the fastest-growing expense in the city since 2000: pension funds.
“The city’s payments to the pension plans have grown at 25 percent annually since fiscal year 2001,” said Martin Davis, a labor and pension analyst with the city’s Independent Budget Office."
