Republicans Put More Heat on NPR

Republicans Put More Heat on NPR - WSJ.com
"'Taxpayers should not be on the hook for something that is widely available in the private market,' Rep. Doug Lamborn (R., Colo), author of the bill, said in a statement.
'I wish only the best for NPR.
Like many Americans, I enjoy much of their programming.'"

And some of us HATE most of their programing and don't think we ought to be on the financial hook for their progressive indoctrination.

Volunteers needed to drive seniors and dialysis patients MLive.com
"The American Red Cross, serving Muskegon, Oceana, and Newaygo County, is in critical need of volunteer drivers. Volunteers are needed to transport patients to dialysis appointments and seniors to medical appointments."

This is an excellent program and an easy way for someone who really cares to accomplish "hands on" volunteering.

Bureaucrats to union thugs: Come out fighting

Bureaucrats to union thugs: Come out fighting Examiner Editorial Editorials Washington Examiner
"In other words, what constitutes a threat of violence in the age of Obama is now to be determined by the application of a complicated set of bureaucratic criteria, which inevitably will require massive administrative litigation before a decision is rendered.
Which is another way of inviting union thugs to have at it without fear of consequences anytime soon."

Nuclear Disaster in Japan

Nuclear Disaster in Japan - Reason Magazine
"The crisis at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plants continues.
Amazingly, a 40-year-old power plant built to withstand a 7.9 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale shut down automatically as designed when the Earth began shaking.

In fact, it stood up to an earthquake that released more than 40 times the amount of energy the plant was designed to survive.
At the moment it appears that the 33-foot tsunami that knocked out its backup diesel generators for its coolant pumps was the plant's undoing."

Let's see how this works out.
It wouldn't be possible that the good folks at NS could find something to do with that extra moolah....wouldn't it?

Gov. Rick Snyder says pensions should never have been tax exempt in Michigan

Gov. Rick Snyder says pensions should never have been tax exempt in Michigan MLive.com
"Gov. Rick Snyder today said elected officials made a mistake back in 1994 when they exempted private sources of retirement income, including pensions, from the state income tax.

Until then, only public pensions had been exempt from tax.
At the time, Gov. John Engler told lawmakers either to start taxing public pensions, including their own, or begin exempting private pensions from tax.

Lawmakers in both parties, of course, chose the latter, allowing joint filers to exclude up to $60,000 in private pension from tax.
Adjusted for inflation because the law also does that, the exemption is now up to $90,240."

The issue is legitimate for discussion unless public employee pensions are exempt.
Protecting the big union pensioners from paying their fair share and then taxing those private pensions to pay for the non-taxed unions members is simply an invitation for revolution!

Feed Your Family on $10 Billion a Day

iowahawk: Feed Your Family on $10 Billion a Day
"Feed Your Family on $10 Billion a Day
Seems like these days I hear a lot of whiney whiners whining about 'out of control government spending' and 'insane deficits' and such, trying to make hay out of a bunch of pointy-head boring finance hooey.

Sure, $3.7 trillion of spending sounds like a big number.
'Oh, boo-hoo, how are we going to get $3.7 trillion dollars?
We're broke, boo-hoo-hoo,' whine the whiners.
What these skinflint crybabies fail to realize is that $3.7 trillion is for an entire year - which translates into only a measly $10 billion per day!

Mister, I call that a bargain."

INFLATE THAT HIGHER-ED BUBBLE

“The best economic policy is one that produces more college graduates…:

"The government decides to try to increase the middle class by subsidizing things that middle class people have:

If middle-class people go to college and own homes, then surely if more people go to college and own homes, we’ll have more middle-class people.

But homeownership and college aren’t causes of middle-class status, they’re markers for possessing the kinds of traits — self-discipline, the ability to defer gratification, etc. — that let you enter, and stay, in the middle class.

Subsidizing the markers doesn’t produce the traits; if anything, it undermines them."

Taxpayers Have Rights, Too

Taxpayers Have Rights, Too Neal McCluskey Cato Institute: Commentary
"Watching the coverage of the big Wisconsin standoff, you could easily get the impression that it's all about the trampling of workers' rights.

And individuals do, indeed, have the right to band together in pursuit of better wages and conditions.

The problem is, the taxpayers who pay those wages also have rights, and those are the ones currently being trampled. Which highlights the real problem: When government does things, someone's rights are always crushed."

PUBLIC EMPLOYEES IN WISCONSIN DON’T SEE THE IRONY

Instapundit » Blog Archive » PUBLIC EMPLOYEES IN WISCONSIN DON’T SEE THE IRONY
“The protests have been on behalf of well-paid people with excellent jobs — better jobs than the average Wisconsinite’s.

And the protesters got massive extra doses of freedom to express themselves in the state capitol for over a month, without any threats of violence or even arrest for the crimes they committed in full view of the police.

I mean, I know they have their complaints, but they are not even the bottom sector of the Wisconsin economy.

If there were to be a class struggle here, they would be taken aback to find themselves in the role they actually have in this economy: the oppressors!”

Plus, from the comments: “The only class struggle in WI is the one between those with class and those without it.”"

Do We Still Need Unions?
No.
“The primary purpose of public unions today, as ugly as it sounds, is to work against the financial interests of taxpayers: the more public employees are paid in wages and uncapped benefits, the less taxpayers keep of the money they earn.
It’s time to call an end to the privileged class.
And the White House makes a mistake if it thinks it can grow a manufactured and uncivil unrest into a popular movement.”
