Michigan emergency manager law: What's next after Public Act 4 repeal | MLive.com
4. Prospect of municipal bankruptcy: PA 4 was designed, in part, to help cash-strapped municipalities avoid bankruptcy by providing emergency managers with broad powers.
No city in Michigan has ever filed for Chapter 9, and Snyder has previously said he'd like to keep it that way.
But the governor on Wednesday acknowledged that, without PA 4, "the probability of municipal bankruptcies could increase, because that could really be the only option left."

$5 Trillion Price Tag for Public Pensions
$5 Trillion Price Tag for Public Pensions - The Best Life (usnews.com)
As strapped state and local governments scramble for ways to balance their budgets, it's become very clear that it will be impossible for many to honor their pension promises to new employees and even current retirees.
According to a recent economic study, the cost to fully fund these promises would cost taxpayers $5 trillion over a 30-year period, or nearly $1,400 a year in higher state and local taxes and fees for every household in the country.

Daily Kos: Buying Debt - What OWS has been up to.
Brilliant!
Why hasn't anyone thought of this sooner?
If you are in debt, from medical issues or what have you, most companies sell that debt to a debt collection company that hounds you to pay it off. Usually buying the debt is cheap.
A few hundred dollars will buy you thousands of dollars of debt. So a company pays $500 for $10,000 of bad debt.
The company calls and harrasses you and says they got a great deal for you - pay them just $2000 and they will wipe the debt away.
They make a 400% profit as they act like vultures on the poor and downtrodden.
Let me tell you of the brilliant plan Occupy Wall Street has come up with.
They bought $14,000 of bad debt for a whopping $500 and then "poof" made the debt disappear forever!
Now OWS is launching the ROLLING JUBILEE, a program that has been in development for months. OWS is going to start buying distressed debt (medical bills, student loans, etc.) in order to forgive it. As a test run, we spent $500, which bought $14,000 of distressed debt.
We then ERASED THAT DEBT.
And now they are taking it nationwide with a show and fundraiser.
AND YOU CAN HELP.
A brilliant name too - The People's Bailout.

Foodstamps Surge By Most In One Year To New All Time Record, In Delayed Release
Foodstamps Surge By Most In One Year To New All Time Record, In Delayed Release | ZeroHedge
There was, however, another closely tracked number which perhaps is far more indicative of the economic "growth" in the past 4 years, which certainly had a delayed release.
The number of course is that showing how many Americans are on foodstamps, and usually is released at the end of the month, or the first day or two of the next month.
This time the USDA delayed its release nine days past the semi-official deadline, far past the election, and until Friday night to report August foodstamp data.
One glance at the number reveals why: at 47.1 million, this was not only a new all time record, but the monthly increase of 420,947 from July was the biggest monthly increase in one year.
One can see why a reported surge in foodstamps ahead of the elections is something the USDA, and the administration may not have been too keen on disclosing.

The Edge of the Abyss
The Edge of the Abyss - Mark Steyn - National Review Online
In order to avoid the public humiliation of a failed bond auction, the U.S. Treasury sells 70 percent of the debt it issues to the Federal Reserve — which is to say the left hand of the U.S. government is borrowing money from the right hand of the U.S. government.
It’s government as a Nigerian e-mail scam, with Ben Bernanke playing the role of the dictator’s widow with $4 trillion under her bed that she’s willing to wire to Timmy Geithner as soon as he sends her his bank-account details.
If that’s all a bit too technical, here’s the gist: There’s nothing holding the joint up.
