Irish Examiner USA: Confessions Of A 'Cold-Hearted' Republican
"I was reminded about this long ago incident listening to the recent testimonies in Congress on the gun control issues.
The Democrats always wage their battles by triggering emotional reactions while the Republicans tend to value the facts - which explains why I am a Republican and why she is a diehard Democrat."

The big fat Greek food fight: Hundreds fight each other for free vegetables on the streets of Athens
The big fat Greek food fight: Hundreds fight each other for free vegetables on the streets of Athens | Mail Online
"Hundreds of people were fighting eachother on the streets of Athens during a food giveaway, prompting an outcry over the growing desperation created by economic crisis.
Farmers protesting against government cuts gave away 50 tonnes of free vegetables and fruit in the Greek capital earlier today, causing chaos in the streets as impoverished and hungry people elbowed their way to the stalls.
Startling images of Greeks struggling to seize bags of tomatoes and leeks thrown from a truck outside the Agriculture Ministry have sparked further debate about poverty in the debt-ridden nation. "

Michigan's Snyder is latest GOP governor to accept Medicaid expansion under 'ObamaCare' - The Hill's Healthwatch

The Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday that Snyder will back the expansion in the budget he delivers to the state legislature the next day.
The expansion will give roughly 470,000 Michigan residents access to Medicaid, the newspaper reported."

Michigan Union Tell-All
Review & Outlook: Michigan Union Tell-All - WSJ.com
"When Michigan became the 24th right-to-work state late last year, everyone knew unions would try to overturn or otherwise neuter the law. Less expected was that they would do so at the expense of their own members.
That's the message from a December 27-28 memo to local union presidents and board members from Michigan Education Association President Steven Cook, which recommends tactics that unions can use to dilute the impact of the right-to-work law.
One bright idea is to renegotiate contracts now to lock teachers into paying union dues after the right-to-work law goes into effect in March. Another is to sue their own members who try to leave.
"Members who indicate they wish to resign membership in March, or whenever, will be told they can only do so in August," Mr. Cook writes in the three-page memo obtained by the West Michigan Policy Forum.
"We will use any legal means at our disposal to collect the dues owed under signed membership forms from any members who withhold dues prior to terminating their membership in August for the following fiscal year."
Got that, comrade?"

He said they should contact the department the officer works for and file a complaint.

LOWER EDUCATION BUBBLE UPDATE:
Alexandria cops bust 10-year-old for bringing toy gun to school.
The boy, a fifth-grader at Douglas MacArthur Elementary School whose name is not being released, was charged as a juvenile with brandishing a weapon, police said. . . .
When the boy arrived, authorities found the toy in his backpack.
He was taken into custody, transported to a juvenile detention center for booking and then released to his parents, Hildebrandt said.
“The safety of our students is always our first concern,” Sherman said. “We appreciate the quick response and action by our police.”
Your students were always safe, because it was a toy gun.
Except they’re not safe from overweening officialdom, who can’t tell the difference between a dangerous weapon and a toy gun.
Or, more accurately, who choose to ignore the difference.
Sending your kids to public school is looking more and more like parental malpractice.

Goodbye, Prius? Japanese carmakers drop battery electric-car development - Washington Times
"Japan is backtracking on battery electric-car development, as even Nissan’s vice chairman, the so-called “father of the Prius,” announced plans to copy Toyota and pursue fuel-cell cars that convert hydrogen to electricity.

Snyder to enter brewing Medicaid battle
Snyder to enter brewing Medicaid battle | The Detroit News | detroitnews.com
"Gov. Rick Snyder will fire the first shot in the next health care skirmish Thursday when he recommends in his budget presentation to the Legislature whether Michigan should open Medicaid to as many as half a million more residents.
Under the 2010 Affordable Care Act, the federal government has promised to pay all costs for three years for residents added to the federal health insurance program for low-income people in states that raise income eligibility.
Federal payments would decline to 90 percent from 2017 to 2020 and would never go lower, according to the law.
The long-term addition of 400,000 to 500,000 Medicaid recipients would result in an additional $1.5 billion to $2 billion a year in federal health spending in Michigan. "
