Felon killed the same day a jury accidentally set him free | www.ajc.com
Just hours after he was released from prison because of a California jury's error, an accused burglar was killed in a violent fight.
"Thirty-seven-year-old Bobby Lee Pearson was accidentally released when a jury in Fresno, California, filled out a not guilty form instead of telling a judge they were deadlocked." (Via Fox News)
"Police say that Willie Gray, the boyfriend of Pearson's sister, killed him during a dispute when he returned home." (Via KGPE)
KFSN reports Pearson had at least five felony convictions for domestic violence, being a felon in possession of a gun and other crimes.
On his latest burglary charge, the case was dismissed — but it wasn't because the jury thought he was innocent.
According to The Fresno Bee, the jury meant to tell the judge they were deadlocked because all 12 jurors couldn't reach a unanimous verdict.
But they said they were confused by the verdict forms and accidentally signed a not guilty form.
After the court realized the mistake, the paper quotes the judge as saying, "I can't believe it. ... I can't change it because double jeopardy has already attached.
This has never happened to me in more than 100 jury trials that I have done." (Via The Fresno Bee)

What do Scottish independence, UKIP, self-employment, cryptocurrencies and the black economy have in common?
What do Scottish independence, UKIP, self-employment, cryptocurrencies and the black economy have in common?
The neo-liberal establishment wont fix itself, so for those fed up with banging their heads against policy brickwalls, there’s only one direction.
Separate.
Separate.
...If the vested interests of the establishment represent an enormous inertia for any meaningful societal or economic change, there is one even more important barrier.
The nature of monetary dysfunction is becoming more apparent, though its position as the ‘lynchpin’ of the various interconnected systemic malfunctions is perhaps not yet as clear as its should be.

....Finally, what of the black economy.
Traditionally, good citizens have seen ethical value in paying their taxes.
This fellow-feeling solidarity is based on a fundamental gut feel appreciation of fairness.
Orthodox economics has progressively hollowed out this sentiment, and replaced it with ‘enlightened self interest’, in the process legitimising selfish behaviour.
At the same time corporations globalise their operations to avoid paying any tax; and citizens are increasingly critical of the misallocation of their tax dollars.
We are dangerously close to seeing the taxation rationale completely dismantled.
It is not uncommon to hear baby boomers who have willingly paid taxes throughout their lives express deep disaffection and an inclination to evade.
Why should a median income worker in Ireland pay 52% marginal rate tax, while Apple pays 2%?
A generation ago the Black Economy was the habitat of choice for criminals; unless some progress is made with regards to inequality, fairness and inclusion, it may well be the habitat of choice for all of us in the future.

Anti-incumbent wave building
Anti-incumbent wave building | The Detroit News
What I think is rallying voters is not a dissatisfaction with the conservative credentials of Republican candidates, but rather a general disgust with Washington and the politicians who populate it.
Voters believe the country is headed to Hell, are fed up with the inability of their leaders to change its course, and are sick of hearing excuses.
They aren’t simply voting against incumbents because some ranting radio talk show host challenged their conservative cred.
They’re sending a broader message of their dissatisfaction by the only means available to them.
So far, Republican voters are the ones leading the charge.
....Those aren’t just Republicans who are unhappy with the performance of their representatives.
Democrats and Independents are honked off, too.
And they’ll get a shot in the general election to exact their punishment.
Democrats who are mightily enjoying watching Republicans destroy each other’s political careers shouldn’t get too smug.
If they’re incumbents, they soon may be the ones at the end of the broom.

You Won’t Believe Obama’s Display of Disrespect to Our Military
You Won’t Believe Obama’s Display of Disrespect to Our Military:
"When a member of the armed services salutes the president, the commander-in-chief is supposed to salute back. Having never served in the military, Obama doesn’t quite understand such things. As he entered Marine One, the official presidential helicopter, while in Europe in May 2013, Barack Obama walked right by the Marine who saluted him and up the stairs into the helicopter. This isn’t the first time he has dissed a Marine in this manner. "

Barack Obama Could Be Facing 10 Years to Life in Prison:
"Was what he did legal? Absolutely not.
The president is not a king. When we considered revolt against the British, we had the option to remain subjects of a king. We chose not to. When we tried to erect a new government, fledgling American states had a very serious discussion about the need for a king. We discussed whether a nation could survive without a monarch.
We, again, chose to not have a king.
Now, we are saddled with a president who behaves more and more like a king and according to a top legal expert, his grandiose disdain for the confines of the executive branch could land him in prison."

Blair: Don't blame me for meltdown in Iraq: Astonishing 'essay' by ex-PM: he says Obama quit too soon... and the UK should launch attacks | Mail Online:
Tony Blair last night attacked ‘bizarre’ claims that his decision to go to war with Iraq in 2003 caused the current wave of violence in the country – and blamed everyone but himself for the crisis.
The former Prime Minister insisted he was right to topple Saddam Hussein with the US and said things would have been worse if the dictator had not been ousted from power a decade ago.
Mr Blair ended a week-long silence after mounting claims by diplomats and Labour MPs that his and Mr Bush’s handling of the Iraq War sowed the seeds of the attempt by the Al Qaeda-backed ISIS terror group to conquer Iraq.
In a 2,800-word ‘essay’ on the new Middle East conflagration, Mr Blair refused to apologise and argued:
Barack Obama ordered US troops to leave Iraq too soon.
Britain and America must launch renewed military attacks in Iraq and Syria.
Al Qaeda was ‘beaten’ in Iraq thanks to the Blair-Bush war, but the bungling Iraqi government let them back in.

"1. Common Core is a Federal Takeover of Education

This is a failed educational approach that will undermine educational quality and choice.

5 Disastrous Obama Policy Decisions That Have Already Blown Up In His Face - John Hawkins - Page 1
The only reason liberalism survives is because there's usually a good bit of lag between when a policy is being implemented and the time when the American people get to see the results.
If Americans could somehow magically see what would happen in a decade or two after a liberal policy has passed, there would be no liberals left.
Instead, back in the real world, liberals create or exacerbate disasters with their policies, blame everyone other than themselves, and then demand more government action to fix the problem they screwed up in the first place.

Barack Obama is a perfect example of how this works.
This is a man who basically had carte blanche to do anything he wanted for the first two years of his presidency since Democrats controlled Congress by a large margin. Since then, Obama has probably gotten his way more than any President in modern history, even though he had to break and ignore so many laws that he created a constitutional crisis in the process.
So, how has all that unbridled liberalism worked out?

Did you know that the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams (ISIS) al Qaeda, has something in common with Michael Bloomberg and Shannon Watts, Founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America?
In a document circulating on social media attributed to the group, Isis warned tribal leaders and sheikhs not to “work with [the Iraqi] government and be traitors” while proclaiming that women should only go outside if absolutely necessary.“For women, dress decently and wear wide clothes. Only go out if needed,” read the document as translated by Al Aan TV reporter Jenan Moussa.Further rules included bans on drugs, alcohol and cigarettes while public gatherings, the possession of guns and the carrying of flags not of the Islamic state were outlawed.
It seems that those who seek to have total control over the lives of the people they govern always outlaw the possession of guns by the citizens they mean to rule.
Why do tyrants always seek to ban or severely limit private citizen’s ability to own firearms?

Here are a few provisions from Senator Boxer’s website:
• One, it would help ensure that families and others can (read:ANYONE!!!) go to court and seek a gun violence prevention order to temporarily stop someone close to them who poses a danger to themselves or others from purchasing a firearm.
• Two, it would help ensure that families and others (read:ANYONE!!!) can also seek a gun violence prevention warrant that would allow law enforcement to take temporary possession of firearms that have already been purchased if a court determines that the individual poses a threat to themselves or others.
• Three, it would help ensure that law enforcement makes full use of all existing gun registries when assessing a tip, warning or request from a concerned family member or other close associate.

The Stats Prove it: ‘Gun-Free Zones’ Simply Don’t Work:
"It is apparent that gun-free zones do not work to effectively curb gun violence. If you do not believe me, then take a look at the Virginia Tech massacre, the two Fort Hood mass shootings, the recent shooting at Seattle Pacific University, the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the shooting in the Perry-Castaneda Library and many others. They each took place in a gun-free zone. The reality is that gun-free zones only do one thing: They disarm law-abiding citizens, specifically concealed handgun license holders. "

Will Obama Abandon Americans in Baghdad?
Will Obama Abandon Americans in Baghdad? | Lubbock Online | Lubbock Avalanche-Journal:
Will Commander in Chief Obama decide not to adequately protect and evacuate Americans from Iraq? Will Obama abandon Americans in Baghdad just as he abandoned Americans in Benghazi?
There are apparently still thousands of Americans in the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. These Americans are apparently frightened, with many wanting to be evacuated out of Iraq. This is not happening.
The Obama Administration fears that evacuating the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad might make Obama appear to be weak. Fox News reported on the dire situation and Obama’s decision to gamble with the lives of Americans for possible political gain,
A senior U.S. defense official said Friday U.S. officials were seeing signs that Iranian fighters were engaged in Iraq, a development the source described as "concerning."But it was not immediately clear how many troops were involved. The defense official told Fox News the United States had been watching the swift gains made by the Sunni group known as Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) for months, adding "this didn't just happen.""This is bad," the official said, adding that "there is not much we can do (militarily). We are way behind the curve."The official said people in the U.S. Embassy feel threatened, but it's too "politically sensitive" to evacuate them right now.
In addition, as many as 600 American contractors were stranded at an Iraqi Air Force base. Obama apparently had U.S. military personnel evacuated but did not evacuate the American contractors. The Iraqi Air Force has been evacuating the Americans, but as many as 200 might still remain. Obama has refused to provide military cover for the evacuation.
Happy Father's Day, Dad.
I originally posted this on 4/6/2006 and as today is Father's Day I thought I might repost with an addition.
Since 2006, I've proudly flown my American flag on my front lawn.
It's been more than an expression of patriotism because it's the last birthday gift I received from my father.
A blustery winter storm took it down a few months ago but my neighbor, TJ, got it back up in time for Father's Day.
I had since added the patriotic Gadsden flag under Old Glory and TJ added a high-tech solar charger for the light.
I think the old sailor would be proud and today might be a good time to showcase the resurrection of my father's gift and the everlasting memory it brings to me of my Dad.
So here is my little story about the last birthday gift I received from my father.
"Dad passed away last summer after a broken hip forced him to move into an assisted living community.
We'd become fast friends in the last 15 years after my rather tumultuous youth.
Like many fathers, Dad hated shopping and early on caved to reality, just sending a generous check as Christmas and birthday gifts.
Most times I'd send Dad a thank you and deposit the check in my checking account, soon to be forgotten.
But last year, after my visit to his new apartment, reality crept into my consciousness and I realized that Dad might not be with me forever.
My birthday check arrived shortly after my visit and for some reason, I just hung on to it, not depositing it for a few weeks.
It took me some time but I soon realized that I wanted to do something special with my father's gift.
As luck would have it, I was chatting with a friend who has his own flagpole and I asked him who had installed it.
He had done it himself, and I instantly had the answer to my quest for the perfect gift from Dad.
A few days later it was up.
Lighted at night, almost always flapping proudly during the day.
I took a photo of the flag and sent it to Dad and I think he got as much of a kick out of as did I.
He even asked me to send him additional photos of my birthday gift.
Dad served in WW2 and Korea, losing his fighter pilot brother over France in 1943.
He instilled a tremendous sense of American pride and patriotism in all his children and he was wonderfully proud to fit into his old US Naval officer's uniform a few years back.
Yes, that's Dad up top.
We all must bear the loss of our parents but the memories of their love and life lessons live on.
My Father is gone now but his spirit and "Dad's Flag" greet me each time I come home.
Thank you Dad, for the wonderful memories that make me smile even as I grieve."

Peer-Reviewed Survey Finds Majority Of Scientists Skeptical Of Global Warming Crisis
Peer-Reviewed Survey Finds Majority Of Scientists Skeptical Of Global Warming Crisis - Forbes:
It is becoming clear that not only do many scientists dispute the asserted global warming crisis, but these skeptical scientists may indeed form a scientific consensus.
Don’t look now, but maybe a scientific consensus exists concerning global warming after all.
Only 36 percent of geoscientists and engineers believe that humans are creating a global warming crisis, according to a survey reported in the peer-reviewed Organization Studies.
By contrast, a strong majority of the 1,077 respondents believe that nature is the primary cause of recent global warming and/or that future global warming will not be a very serious problem.
The survey results show geoscientists (also known as earth scientists) and engineers hold similar views as meteorologists.
Two recent surveys of meteorologists (summarized here and here) revealed similar skepticism of alarmist global warming claims.
.......One interesting aspect of this new survey is the unmistakably alarmist bent of the survey takers.
They frequently use terms such as “denier” to describe scientists who are skeptical of an asserted global warming crisis, and they refer to skeptical scientists as “speaking against climate science” rather than “speaking against asserted climate projections.”
Accordingly, alarmists will have a hard time arguing the survey is biased or somehow connected to the ‘vast right-wing climate denial machine.’

The Idea That Won’t Die: How Taxing Cars by the Mile is Back on the Agenda Again | TheBlaze.com:
"CBO imagines collecting the tax by fitting each car with a device that tracks how far the car has gone. That data could be read electronically whenever someone uses a toll or stops at a service station for gas.
While CBO admits there are some privacy issues involved, it suggested that the electronic devices would be used to generate information that is only collected by a private entity, not the government, for the purpose of calculating mileage taxes.
The Obama administration seems to like this idea."

Russia Sent Tanks to Separatists in Ukraine, U.S. Says - NYTimes.com:
"The State Department said Friday that Russia had sent tanks and other heavy weapons to separatists in Ukraine, supporting accusations Thursday by the Ukrainian government.
A convoy of three T-64 tanks, several BM-21 multiple rocket launchers and other military vehicles crossed the border near the Ukrainian town of Snizhne, State Department officials said.
The Ukrainian Army reported Friday that it had destroyed two of the tanks and several other vehicles in the convoy.
“This is unacceptable,” said Marie Harf, the deputy State Department spokeswoman.
“A failure by Russia to de-escalate this situation will lead to additional costs.”"

One hero. A continuing national disgrace.-----------Standing up to Deceit in University Admissions
Richard Sander: Standing up to Deceit in University Admissions:
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn reportedly once said, “One man who stopped lying could bring down a tyranny.”
Although admissions policy at American universities is not quite tyranny, it is surrounded by much deceit. In standing up to the deceit, one man has been more important and courageous than all others
And if the deceit is ever brought down, that man will deserve most of the credit.
His name is Richard Sander.
".....UCLA Law School felt very different.
....Like a hundred fictional travelers to new worlds that seemed at first to be utopias, I was gradually to discover that the law school had some disturbing hidden secrets.
One discovery was that race was closely linked to law school performance.
Almost all classes other than seminars used anonymous grading, but after grades were turned in, professors could get a “matching sheet” that linked exam numbers to names.
After my very first semester I was struck that my Hispanic, black, and American Indian students were mostly getting Cs in a class in which the median grade was a B-.
The pattern repeated the next semester--including even students who had impressed me in class.
Puzzled, I asked a senior colleague about the pattern.
Oh yes, she replied, shaking her head.
The minority students come in with weaker preparation.
......For instance, the law school had created an index that combined information about an applicant’s LSAT score, his undergraduate grades, and the difficulty of his college.
Whites were essentially guaranteed acceptance if they had a score of 820 or higher on the index and guaranteed rejection if they had a score of 760 or lower.
For African Americans and American Indians, however, the corresponding numbers were 620 and 550. Thus, for a 140-point range (620 to 760), a student would certainly be admitted if he were black yet certainly be rejected if he were white.
Although the gap in preparation was generally unknown to the students, the gap in classroom performance, as Sander discovered, was well known.
As he notes:
Once, when a student told me about his courseload, I observed that he was in a lot of tough classes graded on mandatory curves.
That was true, he responded, but a couple of them were “safeties.”
I asked him what that meant.
A little embarrassed, he said that was a term for a class that had enough black and Hispanic students to absorb the low grades on the curve.
His remark was breathtakingly cynical--and an oversimplification too. (The correlation between race and grades was by no means perfect.)
But it was hard to blame him, and I gradually learned that many students thought in those terms.
