Appreciate China’s Big New Seaplane:
"A good deal of polite Western snickering met the announcement that China was on the verge of building large seaplanes–an “old technology”, scoffed the haters, whose “heyday came and went with the demise of the Pan Am Trans-Oceanic Clipper”.
But at least one Chinese aviation commentator dispensed a bit of wisdom for the doubters:
“The old saying ‘A thousand days the country nurtures its soldiers and all for one day’s battle’ applies to the development of amphibious aircraft.
People say such equipment is becoming useless, but will eventually realize they are indispensable in maritime operations,”
The lesson is pretty clear–don’t dismiss old-looking tech.
And he’s right.
What looks like a useless piece of equipment to many of Washington’s vaunted hunters of “fifth and sixth-generation opponents”, is, in reality, the poor man’s MV-22.
When fielded, these big amphibious planes will do a darn good job of disrupting the modern maritime battlefield.
Tactical Innovation:
Amphibious aircraft make a great, cost-effective means for littoral power projection.
Seaplanes also offer a great way to start building a corps of operators prepared to intuitively understand the speed and range advantages (and the attendant weaknesses!) of MV-22."

VIDEO: Former NFL Linebacker: Democrat Party is Destroying Black Communities: “I was all into the Democratic Party and everything and then I started realizing they helped destroy our communities and we’re celebrating electing these people,” Cobb, who volunteers his time helping underprivileged youth in the Camden, New Jersey area, recalled.

Pathetic "hate-America" wimps with power-------National Guard dumps Dale Earnhardt Jr.; GOP cites Obama pressure
National Guard dumps Dale Earnhardt Jr.; GOP cites Obama pressure | WashingtonExaminer.com:
The National Guard is ending its sponsorship of NASCAR and IndyCar racing teams and top racers Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Graham Rahal, in a shocking move that some are blaming on President Obama and Senate Democrats.
The Guard said it will cut funding at the end of the year, claiming its contract is up after investing $44 million in the two sports.
However, Hendrick Motorsports, the NASCAR team the Guard supports and the owner of Earnhardt's No. 88 Chevrolet, said the contract extends through 2015.
For fans, the decision means that the most popular driver in NASCAR is now without one of his top sponsors — and next year, his car, firesuits and hats will no longer carry the National Guard logo in huge letters.
Democrats had pushed the National Guard to stop spending money on the sponsorships, which were used for recruiting.

A nearby resort owner said two hunting dogs were killed in each attack.
Days earlier, over the weekend in Dickinson County, a wolf killed one cow. The landowner also killed the wolf.

Playground stabbing suspect, 12, tells police: 'He did it because he is bad and always does stupid things' | MLive.com:
"KENTWOOD, MI – Just before going to a playground at Pinebrook Village, Jamarion Lawhorn took a knife, with an 8-inch blade, from his kitchen and walked out with it at his side.
Michael Connor Verkerke, 9, was playing at the park with his brother.
Lawhorn didn’t know Connor.
He stabbed him in the back, then waited for police.
Connor ran home.
His father frantically put pressure on his wounds.
Connor, the son of Dani and Jared Verkerke, died an hour later at the hospital.
Soon after the killing, Lawhorn – with his mother and stepfather at his side – said simply: “I stabbed him.”
He told police he wanted to go to jail, or die.
His stepfather interrupted: “So you just went and stabbed somebody?”
The boy replied, “Yep.
The statements are contained in a delinquency petition filed Friday in Kent County Circuit Court. Prosecutors are trying Lawhorn as an adult in the Monday, Aug. 4, killing.
The petition contains Kentwood Police reports that describe the horror of the attack - and Lawhorn’s response, both to neighbors immediately afterward, and to police at a hospital where he was taken.
“Jamarion was asked why he did that and he stated because he wanted to go to jail,” an investigator wrote."

Clear choice for voters------Unions, Environmentalists Spend Millions to Elect Michigan Dem
Unions, Environmentalists Spend Millions to Elect Michigan Dem | Washington Free Beacon:
"Radical environmentalists and big labor are pooling their resources to boost Michigan Democrat Rep. Gary Peter’s Senate campaign.
The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) and public sector union giant AFSCME announced on Thursday that they will pool together $2.1 million to aid Peters in his race against former Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land.
“We’re proud to join with AFSCME to inform Michigan voters that Rep. Gary Peters stands for public health protection and job creation,” LCV Senior Vice President for Campaigns Daniel J. Weiss said in a release on the organization’s blog.
Both groups have already spent large sums in the race.
AFSCME has spent nearly $1 million on two separate attacks ads against Land, according to FEC reports. LCV is Peters’ fifth largest contributor, donating nearly $25,000 to his campaign and PAC, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
Peters has led the race for the entire summer and has outspent Land by almost $300,000 as of July, according to the Center for Responsive Politics."

The Geography of Horror
The Geography of Horror - The American Interest:
"There are two ways of looking at the record of these atrocities.
One is to see them as intrinsic to Islam, the other as an aberration of genuine Islam.
The first view is rarely proposed publically in the United States, though it may be quietly held by some Americans less affected by the prevailing culture of tolerance.
It is more openly stated in Europe, for example by the Dutch populist Geert Wilders, who admitted that he hated Islam as an enemy of freedom (among other things he proposed that the Quran, like Hitler’s Mein Kampf, should be banned in the Netherlands).
It is also interesting to compare the different attitudes to Islamist terrorism by the successive administrations of George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
Immediately after the attacks of September 2001 President Bush made a speech in which he declared that we are not at war with Islam but with terrorism.
(He also said that “Islam means peace”, which it does not.
A linguistically challenged White House speech writer must have confused two Arabic words—salaam/”peace”, a common form of salutation among Muslims, and aslama/”submission”, the root of the religion’s name.
Not that this matters; Bush meant well.)
The “war against terror” unleashed by the Bush administration has not gone well, to put it mildly. "

A Detroit Jury Did WHAT?!: An Absolute Travesty of Justice
A Detroit Jury Did WHAT?!: An Absolute Travesty of Justice:
"But ask yourself this: while Ted Wafer didn’t mean to kill her, isn’t the world better off without her? Isn’t the world better off before she did more drugs and drank more and killed who knows how many? Wafer was near tears when he testified about his remorse for accidentally shooting her. But he did the world a favor. And it wasn’t about race. It was about defending himself–his life–and his home.
Wafer’s attorney, Cheryl Carpenter, did an excellent job. There is nothing else she could have done or said. I followed the case online and watched the testimony. And I thought only an O.J. jury would have found Wafer guilty. Sadly, he got one of those juries. And he faces up to life in prison, plus an automatic two years in prison for any criminal conviction involving the use of a firearm (that’s Michigan criminal law, and I think it’s a form of double jeopardy, especially if the gun is legally owned, as Wafer’s was).
The police “investigation” in this case was an absolute joke. The Dearbornistan Heights police didn’t dust for fingerprints until nearly a week after the incident. In the meantime, race-pimping media whores held a “vigil” outside Wafer’s home. Countless people may have touched the house and left prints. Therefore, we don’t know if McBride had others with her that night who banged on the walls and windows all around his home.
And the case wasn’t about race. It all happened so fast, he didn’t have time to think about that and didn’t know the race of the person or persons banging on his home or his door until the last second. This was about a lowlife woman who made bad choices in life which brought her to this point–banged up from a one-car accident she caused in the middle of the night, driving from who knows what (a drug deal?). It was about a man who awoke to frightening banging all over his home in the middle of the night, and he tried to defend himself.
I doubt Wafer will get life in prison, but he’ll get some time and at least the two years because of the felony firearm law. And he may win on appeal to the conservative Michigan Court of Appeals. But in the meantime, he’ll lose everything–his money, his home, and his reputation (which he’s already lost to some extent). All for defending himself from a thug-ette lowlife."

Marijuana smokers sue San Diego, say long drives to dispensaries pollute air
Marijuana smokers sue San Diego, say long drives to dispensaries pollute air - Washington Times:
"Medical marijuana smokers in San Diego say the city has forced their pot shops to locate in remote areas and that means the drives to and from will increase air pollution — and ultimately, harm their lungs.
The Union of Medical Marijuana Patients has filed a lawsuit, saying the city is violating the California Environmental Quality Act, United Press International reported.
The suit names as defendants the Coastal Commission and the city of San Diego and claims the zoning laws put in place for marijuana dispensaries means patients have to actually get in their cars to drive to the remote locations — and the additional drive times will only increase the city’s air pollution levels."

Obama’s “Most Transparent White House” Lambasted by Independent Watchdogs
Obama’s “Most Transparent White House” Lambasted by Independent Watchdogs | Somewhat Reasonable:
This week, Obama’s lack of transparency received some of its most vocal criticism to date. In an open letter to congressional leaders, 47 of the government’s 73 inspectors-general (independent watchdogs) stated that they were unable to effectively perform their duties due to obstructive behavior and lack of cooperation in many federal agencies. Agencies from theEPA to the Peace Corps have dragged their feet or been unwilling to comply with requests for documents, claiming the contents of documents to be “privileged.” This has resulted in frustration among the independent watchdogs, which have been prevented from fulfilling their legally mandated duty.
The letter stated:
“Agency actions that limit, condition, or delay access thus have profoundly negative consequences for our work: they make us less effective, encourage other agencies to take similar actions in the future, and erode the morale of the dedicated professionals that make up our staffs.”

“The Obama administration has lost or destroyed e-mails for more than 20 witnesses, and in each case, the loss wasn’t disclosed to the National Archives or Congress for months or years, in violation of federal law,” House Oversight and Government Reform Committee chairman Darrell Issa (R., Calif.) said ofTavenner’s lost e-mails.
“It defies logic that so many senior Administration officials were found to have ignored federal recordkeeping requirements only after Congress asked to see their e-mails,” he continued. “Just this week, my staff followed up with HHS, who has failed to comply with a subpoena from ten months ago. Even at that point, the administration did not inform us that there was a problem with Ms. Tavenner’s e-mail history. Yet again, we discover that this administration will not be forthright with the American people unless cornered.”
A Good Way to Wreck a Local Economy: Build Casinos
A Good Way to Wreck a Local Economy: Build Casinos - The Atlantic
The promise however comes increasingly hedged with fine print.
The casino market is nearing saturation, if it is not already saturated.
Two casinos have closed in Mississippi this year.
Four have closed or will soon close in Atlantic City, including the glitziest hotel on the boardwalk, Revel.
Casinos that do stay in business yield less to their towns and states.
Revenues from Maryland’s first casino, in Perryville, at the northern tip of Chesapeake Bay, have already dropped 30 percent from their peak in 2008, and are expected to decline even more rapidly in future as competitors proliferate.

Yet the truly bad news about casinos is not found in the tax receipts.
It’s found in the casinos' economic and social impact on the towns that welcome them.

Until the late 1970s, no state except Nevada permitted casino gambling.
Then Atlantic City persuaded its state legislature to allow casinos, in hope of reviving the prosperity of the battered resort town.
Hotels sprung up along the seafront.
Thousands of people were hired.
And the rest of Atlantic City … saw no benefits at all.
All these years later, it still has desperate trouble sustaining even a single grocery store.

No one should look to casinos to revive cities, “because that’s not what casinos do.”
So explained the project manager for a new Wynn casino rising near Philadelphia.
He’s right, but it has taken a surprisingly long time for city governments to acknowledge a fact that was well understood by the 19th-century Americans who suppressed gambling in the decades after the Civil War.

The impact of casinos on neighboring property values is “unambiguously negative,” according to the economists at the National Association of Realtors.
Casinos don’t encourage non-gaming businesses to open nearby, because the people who most often visit casinos do not wander out to visit other shops and businesses.
A casino is not like a movie theater or a sports stadium, offering a time-limited amusement. It is designed to be an all-absorbing environment that does not release its customers until they have exhausted their money.

IRS union runs on taxpayer subsidies
IRS union runs on taxpayer subsidies « Watchdog.org:
"WASHINGTON, D.C. — While Congress takes its five-week vacation, the hard partisan work continues at the National Treasury Employees Union, subsidized by taxpayers.
The Washington Times reported this week that the Internal Revenue Service provides government salaries, office space and equipment to NTEU operatives, who ostensibly represent 92,000 IRS employees.
The IRS’ deputy commissioner calculates these union workers spent 573,319 hours in 2012 on NTEU business.
That’s the equivalent of 286 full-time employees doing nothing but union labor.
Additionally, the union spent $687,400 on travel — also on the taxpayers’ tab.
And who can forget the $4.1 million Star Trek-themed “training” session in Las Vegas four years ago?
On top of the ongoing outlays of time and money, there’s the politics of it all.
Ninety-four percent of NTEU campaign contributions go to Democrats.
For whatever reason, Republicans go along for the ride.
“The union naturally wants greater benefits, bigger salaries and more handsome bonuses, so Congress pays the union to do it,” the Times reported."

6 Michigan schools get state money to switch to a year-round calendar | MLive.com:
LANSING -- Six Michigan schools will receive money to help transition from the traditional school calendar to a year-round "balanced" calendar.
The State Board of Education is set to approve grant requests for four schools at next week's meeting, and two additional schools received money through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to help offset their costs as well.
GEE Edmonson Academy, a charter school in Detroit, is set to receive $395,000, while the Muskegon Heights Public School Academy System is the largest beneficiary at $750,000. Watersmeet Township Public Schools will get $709,000, less than the $735,000 they requested, while Ypsilanti Community Schools will get $146,000, far below their $507,500 request.
Baldwin Community Schools and Madison District Public Schools in Oakland County each received $750,000 through the MEDC to aid in their transition to the new calendar.
The MDE funds are part of a $2 million pilot program included in the new state budget to help schools switch to the alternative calendar in some or all of their buildings. The money helps cover costs associated with preparing buildings - such as installing air conditioning for hot summer months - and other one-time setup expenses.

"Among the most distressing distempers on the liberal side of the American public policy debate is the mushrooming pressure to repeal the First Amendment and put officials in charge of censoring political speech. How things have changed. Liberals like former Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis once were the stoutest defenders of the right of every American to speak his mind."
