DENVER—Everyone in Colorado from Republicans to marijuana moguls wants to stop welfare cash from being used to buy recreational pot, but standing in their way are the state’s formidable legislative Democrats.

Despite mounting evidence that “welfare for weed” is more than an urban myth, Democratic legislators are balking at a bill that would add marijuana dispensaries and strip clubs to the list of places, along with casinos and liquor stores, where debit-style benefits cards cannot be used to withdraw cash from automatic teller machines, or ATMs.

...The bill received preliminary approval Friday from the state Senate, where Republicans hold an 18-17 edge. 

The stumbling block lies with House Democrats, who hold a 34-31 majority and have shown no enthusiasm for the measure.

Why? 

Last year, Democrats said they were worried about limiting access for welfare recipients, many of whom don’t have bank accounts and may find it difficult to locate nearby ATMs in their neighborhoods. 

Democrats were also dubious about whether EBT cardholders were really blowing public dollars on pot.

...But investigations by other media outlets have shown that the problem is more than a myth. 

On Thursday, Fox31 Denver reported that at least 17 lbs. of marijuana were likely purchased with public dollars in 2014, based on an examination of all ATM transactions using the EBT card in state marijuana dispensaries...”

Tom Brokaw is the highest-profile dissenter to call for the ouster of Brian Williams over his stolen valor helicopter story, but he’s not the only one.  
According to insider accounts, Brokaw said that lesser journalists and producers would have been instantly terminated for the kind of false reporting Williams turned in.  
This point does not appear to have escaped the lower-level staffers of NBC News, as can be seem from some heated behind-the-scenes chatter captured by the New York Post:

NBC brass hasn’t been talking to lower-level employees about the situation, leaving people in a panic, the insider said.

“NBC bosses don’t understand how serious this is. Nobody in a leadership position is talking to the troops. Nobody has addressed it,” the source said.

One longtime NBC employee who has worked with Williams on several occasions had a few dirty words to describe the celebrated anchor, calling him a “real pompous piece of s–t.”

“He’s an a–hole,” he fumed. “He’s not a journalist. He’s a reader.

“Oh, the fireworks that are going off inside,” he said. “It’s embarrassing. He’s the face on NBC. He’s a liar.

Senators, congresswoman from Michigan want Middle Eastern classification added to Census | MLive.com:
DEARBORN, MI -- Michigan's two U.S. Senators and a congresswoman sent a letter this week to the U.S. Census Bureau supporting a proposal to add a Middle Eastern-North African classification to the nation's decennial population count.

The Census Bureau is collecting feedback on a proposal to allow people of Middle Eastern North African descent to identify as such in the 2020 census.

Congress would have to approve the change before it could be added to the 2020 census.

The 2010 census questionnaire, under a question on race, included check boxes for black, white and various Asian, Hispanic and native American identities, but no specific option for Arab Americans have historically been counted by default as white.

Some have pushed for the addition to allow more political visibility and grant opportunities for Arab Americans.

And Democratic U.S. Sens. Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow, along with U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Dearborn), whose district includes a large Arab American population, support the proposal.

..."In Michigan, the Census estimates the population is at 191,600, while the Arab American Institute estimates that more than 500,000 Arab Americans call the state home," they said in a statement publicizing the letter.

"This misrepresentation in population size has led to barriers for representation, employment, health and education...."

We have written many times about the fact that the scientific agencies which are keepers of the world’s historical temperature data are all, or nearly all, under the control of warmists. 
These warmists have systematically altered historic temperature records, so that the temperatures they report today for past eras are not the same as what were measured, say, 70 or 80 years ago. 
The effect of these adjustments is strikingly consistent: they almost always make the past look cooler than it was measured at the time, so that the present looks warmer by comparison.
The opposite–an adjustment that results in reporting a historic temperature higher than what was published contemporaneously–never, or almost never, happens.
These adjustments may or may not be explained; sometimes, they are kept quiet until someone stumbles across the original data and points out a discrepancy.

A man named Paul Homewood, an accountant by profession, has taken it upon himself to research this issue of unexplained temperature adjustments.
He reports on his findings at Not a Lot of People Know That. 
His site is worth checking out, as he is producing a lot of highly relevant data.

One of the areas that Homewood has looked at is Paraguay.
In a post titled All of Paraguay’s temperature record has been tampered with, he found that GISS has systematically altered temperature records to make the past look cooler and the present warmer, and to create an entirely fictitious warming trend.
To show his findings, Homewood created animated GIFs of the data from each weather station in Paraguay, contrasting the “old” data–the data actually recorded by thermometers and reported at the time–with the “new” data, i.e., the massaged numbers that GISS now publishes.

Homewood writes:

Let me state again. These warming adjustments have taken place at every single, currently operational site in Paraguay. …

What is perhaps most telling is that we have not heard a word from NCDC or GISS. We expect the jokers from BEST to jump in, but this data and the associated adjustments are from NCDC and GISS.

Serious accusations have been levelled against them in the media, yet they have not responded or attempted to defend their data. Instead, they seem intent to sweep the matter under the carpet, just as they did last summer when they told us “the system was working as it was supposed to”!

This kind of thing is going on all over the world.
It is one of the reasons why the satellite data (which, however, go back only to 1979) are so important: they have not been corrupted.

Hugo Chávez dreamed of a sweeping “Bolivarian” revolution that would blanket the hemisphere.
He was able to consolidate power outside of Venezuela, including Ecuador, Argentina, Bolivia and Nicaragua, in part by interfering in their electoral politics and campaigns.
Today, that international socialist movement is rearing its ugly head once again. 
This time, it’s in Spain, where there is a paper trail that shows Venezuela is helping bankroll the radical left-wing “Podemos” (We Can) Party that is gaining in power.

It is amazing what Podemos has accomplished in a short period of time.
It was incorporated in January 2014. 

...Unfortunately, Spain has been rocked by recent political scandals, including corruption that has harmed both mainstream parties, Partido Popular (PP) and the socialist party, PSOE, and even the monarchy.

Given that and the dire economy, it is no wonder many are looking for new leadership.
If Spaniards support Podemos, they will certainly get change, but it will be more than they bargained for. 
It certainly was for Venezuela, and that country is falling apart.

It is almost painful watching this exchange between left-wing co-hosts on Morning Joe and a small business owner in San Francisco, who is trying to explain to them how the minimum wage increase is going to put his small business into the red. He appears to be a left-wing owner of a bookstore, no conservative. Three of his five employees make minimum wage.

In many businesses, they’re lucky to make a 5% profit, and a lot of their expenses are due to employee costs, but these idiots have probably never actually a business. They believe money just appears in an employer’s pocket, and he refuses to share it because he’s evil.

But hey just for kicks, let’s do the math. A jump from $11.05 to $15 per hour is about $4 more every hour. Three employees, eight hours a day, 40 hours a week, you’re talking about $5,120 a month more, about $61,400 per year. How much does a book store make? According to this book-owner, just not enough to keep the business alive.

That doesn’t even account for increased unemployment insurance and Social Security and everything else it takes to have an employee.

But the idiots at MSNBC just have to believe that he’s doing it out of spite, because they know what’s better for his business than he does. And now five employees are out of a job and his business closes down.

Co-host Mika Brzezinski is heard saying, “That shouldn’t put you under,” both sounding and looking clueless. I guess when you’re the daughter of former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski, and you make a $2 million annual salary, understanding economics for the little guy isn’t anything you need to bother with.

Once again, there is an attempt to limit and put restrictions on the 2nd Amendment.  Restrictions hurt the law abiding, responsible citizens. Criminals of any age or race will always find a gun.  Laws will not curb lawless behavior.  The behavior of the executive should be enough proof.

One of the great achievements of the last century was the effective elimination of many deadly communicable diseases by the widespread deployment of vaccines.
I can still remember the fear that struck the hearts of every family in the early 1950s at the onset of another summer watch against polio, a disease whose spread has since been all but eliminated globally by the innovations of first the Salk (dead virus) and then the Sabin (live virus) vaccines.

A similar triumph occurred with the development of reliable vaccines for measles, a childhood disease that poses a serious threat to the health and life of those who become infected.
Before the measles vaccine in 1963, the death rate from measles was close to twice that from polio. Fortunately, the new vaccine turned the situation around.
In 1963 and 1964, there were over 800,000 cases of measles in the United States.
By 1982, vaccination had largely eliminated the disease.
Measles made a modest comeback around 1990, and then fell quiescent—until the recent outbreak of measles cases at Disneyland in California, which, as it spreads, puts the issue of vaccines back on the table.
...Thus far, the bad news is that private decisions have led people to let down their guard against communicable diseases on the naïve assumption that the diseases won’t spread.
The good news, so far, is that the public response has been sensible. Let's hope, going forward, it stays that way.
