1780 - British army major John Andre was hanged as a spy. He was carrying information about the actions of Benedict Arnold. 


1836 - Charles Darwin returned to England after 5 years of acquiring knowledge around the world about fauna, flora, wildlife and geology. He used the information to develop his "theory of evolution" which he unveiled in his 1859 book entitled The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. 


1870 - Rome was made the capital of Italy.

"Hundreds of irate parents are planning to attend the Walton County, Georgia, school board meeting Oct. 10 to convey their outrage over their children being taught the religious beliefs of Islam in middle-school social studies.

The outrage erupted over a quiz handed out to students asking them to answer questions related to the five pillars of Islam, the Quran as the “holy” book of Muslims, and the conversion prayer known as the “shahada,” which states, “There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger.” Perhaps most disturbing to Christian parents was the “correct” answer that the Muslim god Allah is the “same god” that is worshiped by Christians and Jews."

Don’t they know that switching from growing food staples to growing biofuel crops for cars only the rich can afford has more than doubled prices of basic foods?
Don’t they know about the people killed in the food riots? 
Do they actually know anything?
Do they care anyway?
There’s no oily sophistry about those questions, no sophistication, no tricky debating traps, no guile, no hidden agenda but always an essential inhumanity to the silence or uneasy evasiveness with which they’re met.
I’ve raised an impolite subject.
The truth is people are not dying, they’re being killed and we’re the ones through inaction doing the killing. 
I make no apology for being so blunt because they’re needed questions, simple questions, brutal even, and yet there’s always that awkward silence in response to them."

A government shutdown would force Congress to address fiscal issues before they reach unmanageable levels, a former Reagan administration official contended Wednesday.

“We’re on the fiscal Titanic and we’re going to hit something hard and immovable one of these days,” said David Stockman, director of the Office of Management and Budget from 1981 to 1985, in a CNBC “Closing Bell” interview.

The House of Representatives and Senate on Wednesday passed a last-minute stopgap spending bill that will keep the federal government open through Dec. 11 pending President Barack Obama’s signature.
But another budget battle will likely ensue then, as Congress remains divided over federal funding for women’s health organization Planned Parenthood.

Many in Congress have opposed a shutdown, as a government closure can put some federal employees temporarily out of work or delay their pay.
Stockman contends it could have a positive effect by making lawmakers address spending and debt issues.

WASHINGTON -- Medicare paid $30 million for ambulance rides for which no record exists that patients got medical care at their destination, the place where they were picked up or other critical information.
The mystery ambulance rides are part of a bigger problem with Medicare payments for transporting patients, according to a federal audit being released Tuesday.
The Department of Health and Human Services' inspector general's office also found that some urban ambulance services got paid for an average distance of more than 100 miles per ride. 
That contrasts with a national average of just 10 miles for urban ambulance rides.
Four major metro areas seemed to be breeding grounds for ambulance schemes. Philadelphia, Los Angeles, New York and Houston accounted for about half of the questionable rides and payments.
...Across the country, 1 in 5 ambulance companies had at least some questionable billings.
"Medicare payments for ambulance transports have increased in recent years, and investigators have uncovered a variety of fraud schemes involving ambulance suppliers," the report said..."

Turning Point

The American flag is a symbol of freedom and at one time, a symbol of unwavering strength.  I truly hope we are just dealing with a temporary ailment.  We ignored some very important signs because we didn’t want to face reality.  Much like knowing something is internally wrong but putting off going to the doctor because you don’t want confirmation.  For a time, it’s easier to live in a world of make believe.  By not facing reality, you somehow convince yourself that everything is just fine.

There comes a turning point.  You can no longer ignore the cold, hard evidence.  You eventually come to the conclusion that life is worth the upcoming battle.  It’s better to know the truth so you know how to fight the disease which has infected your body.  You hope it’s not too late as you begin to ask, why did I wait so long?

Our once healthy, vibrant nation has been infected with a life-threatening disease.  Some noticed signs right away but wanted to give the benefit of the doubt.  After all, the fundamental transformation of America, in true transparency, is really difficult to comprehend.  Some are still coming to the realization that something is wrong, while others are still stuck in denial.

Probably the most difficult aspect is realizing it was a self-inflicted disease.  We all bear a certain amount of responsibility.  We didn’t pay attention and assumed those we elected had our best interests in mind.  We voted without asking questions and allowed the press to be the enabler.  They should have exposed questionable signs but instead they twisted it into a pretty picture or buried it altogether. We went against our better judgment when something didn’t make sense. Sometimes the wait-and-see strategy only makes things worse...
