Experts: ISIS building 'kill lists' of Americans overseas

Experts: ISIS building 'kill lists' of Americans overseas | Washington Examiner:
"The Islamic State is using social media to identify Americans overseas who can be targeted outside of a secure location, experts warned a Senate panel Tuesday.
"One of the emerging tactics that ISIS in particular is trying to use is stalking and killing its foes, especially those who are affiliated with governments," Daveed Gartenstein-Ross, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, during a Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee hearing.
"Basically, taking them out of the government sphere, making them individuals who can be tracked."
Committee Chairman Ron Johnson, R-Wis., convened the hearing to discuss the threat of terrorism following the Brussels bombings last month.
The panelists agreed that government personnel in Brussels and at various NATO facilities in Europe are at risk, but also noted the difficulty of providing adequate protection outside of government facilities.
"What some of the followers and adherents of ISIS have tried to do is expose military personnel and their family members with personal data, addresses, etc.," said Juan Zarate, a former deputy national security adviser under President George W. Bush.
"So there is a vey real effort underway to at least threaten, if not put at risk, family members and personnel outside the bounds of classic security.""

The 50 Worst Cars of the '80s

The 50 Worst Cars of the '80s | Complex
"Some pretty bad cars have been made throughout the years, and most of them seem to have been the result of the questionable engineering and design of the '80s.
Seriously, it might be best if we just pretended that this stretch of 10 years never happened, and if it took most of the '70s with it that would be OK too.
We've gone back and looked at the various automotive horrors of the decade, and we can definitively say that these are The 50 Worst Cars of the '80s."

Milton Friedman Part I: Economics 101 | Glenn Beck

Milton Friedman Part I: Economics 101 | Glenn Beck:

"Today, Friedman would no doubt be labeled an uncaring, hateful racist for his straightforward thinking. For example, when asked at a college forum what role the government plays in helping the poor, he spoke decisively on the matter:

“First of all, the government doesn’t have any responsibility. People have responsibility. This building doesn’t have responsibility. You and I have responsibility. People have responsibility,” Friedman said. “How can we as people exercise our responsibility to our fellow man most effectively? That’s the problem. So far as poverty is concerned, there has never in history been a more effective machine for eliminating poverty than the free enterprise system and the free market.”"

Geography?-----Academic Farce of the Week: How to Ruin Thin Mints

Academic Farce of the Week: How to Ruin Thin Mints | Power Line:
Some day I’ll have to try to figure out why it is that geography departments became an early hotbed of leftist ideological cant at so many universities, where most of the subject matter and courses no longer have anything to do with . . . geography.
At least as that subject has always been understood.
Take in this Ph.D dissertation in geography accepted by the University of California at Santa Barbara:
Smart Cookies: The Gendered Spaces of Labor, Citizenship, and Nationalism in the Girl Scout Cookie Sale
Denise Goerisch-Abstract:
Each year thousands of Girl Scouts sell cookies to friends, family, and neighbors to raise money for their troops and local councils. Lauded as the largest girl-led financial literacy program, the annual Girl Scout cookie sale not only teaches girls important business and leadership skills but also prepares girls for their roles as American women in a neoliberal and capitalist society. Girls learn the importance of ‘giving’ through multiple spaces of the cookie sale. Scouts learn to give and care for others under the veil of market capitalism, neoliberalism, and American nationalism, which seeks to reproduce hegemonic gender roles regarding labor, education, and citizenship. Based on a two-year study on the Girl Scout cookie sale, using qualitative methods and rooted in feminist methodologies, this project seeks to understand how ‘spaces of giving’ emerge in the cookie sale and how these spaces shape social constructions of gender, citizenship, and national identity.
First of all, it takes a special kind of academic fathead to ruin Thin Mints.
But we have people up to it.
Second, if the GPS system failed suddenly, anyone think a current Ph.D in geography could help you navigate a boat in the middle of the ocean, or read a map to get un-lost in the mountains?
If you’re a glutton, you can actually download this dissertation for free right here."

Activist at Chicago Teachers Union Rally Ends Furious Speech by Screaming Three-Word Slogan Every Cop Despises

Activist at Chicago Teachers Union Rally Ends Furious Speech by Screaming Three-Word Slogan Every Cop Despises | Video | TheBlaze.com:
Amid furor over budget and program cuts, Chicago Teachers Union members and their allies staged a one-day strike on Friday filled with protests and rallies on the city streets.
The walkout meant classes were cancelled for over 300,000 students, the Chicago Tribune reported, and many teachers — embroiled in a contract battle — demonstrated in front of schools.
But while the intensity surrounding last week’s “day of action” has tapered off, the conclusion of one incendiary speech has been surging on social media.
Page May, an activist and Black Lives Matter supporter, hollered into the microphone to a cheering audience about young people “winning” ideological battles in the streets.
“I am so in love with my friends and the young black people and allies who are showing up and pouring their blood, their sweat and their tears into the streets every day and shutting s**t down and winning!” she said.
“I am inspired by my 13-year-old students who are half my age and already understand that #BlackLivesMatter is not a slogan, it is a demand.”
Then May added a final message that got the crowd into even more of a frenzy: “F*** the police!” May hollered. “F*** the CPD! … F*** the police, and everybody f*** with ‘em!”
Here’s video of May’s words.
While the clip’s description indicates she’s a teacher,
May instead appears to be an activist. (Content warning: Rough language):

Belgian Minister Reveals That After Brussels Attacks There Were Street Celebrations…in Belgium | TheBlaze.com:
"Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon revealed Wednesday that street celebrations had broken out in various cities in his country last week celebrating the Brussels terrorist attack, as a top politician accused the media of ignoring anti-police riots in a Muslim neighborhood.
...While the right-wing politician conceded that Belgium has a problem with jihadism, he also asserted that profiling does not work as a countermeasure.
According to JTA, Jambon said that Islamists can be found among diverse groups “including doctors, lawyers, and common criminals.”
Only one in six Belgian jihadists grew up in poor homes, he said..."

Schumer Wants New Smartphone Gun Investigated

Schumer Wants New Smartphone Gun Investigated | PJ Media
"Last week, I wrote about a new firearm that folds into the shape of a smartphone.
A Minnesota company, Ideal Conceal, developed the gun as way for people to carry a firearm that doesn't "scare" people by looking like a firearm.
"This little kid says, 'Mommy, Mommy, that man's got a gun,' so the whole restaurant looks at you like you're about to shoot the place up," creator Kirk Kjellberg explained to CNNMoney
"So I thought to myself there's got to be another way to be able to carry without bothering other people."
It's an interesting idea -- perhaps too interesting.
Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY), one of America's most enthusiastic gun-regulators, has called on the DOJ and the ATF to investigate the gun before it comes to market.
The senator says the gun "is just a disaster waiting to happen."

BROADDRICK SPEAKS: I’d ‘love’ to have one-on-one encounter with Hillary

BROADDRICK SPEAKS: I’d ‘love’ to have one-on-one encounter with Hillary | The American Mirror
PART I of III — Hillary Clinton says she stands with women, but Juanita Broaddrick knows first-hand she doesn’t stand with all women.
Broaddrick says Bill Clinton raped her in a Little Rock hotel room in 1978 and shortly after the incident, Hillary deliberately intimidated her into silence.
Today, Broaddrick says she would “welcome” a one-on-one conversation with Hillary to ask her why she did what she did, if she supposedly stands for women.
The American Mirror recently visited Broaddrick at her Arkansas home. While initially declining to appear on camera — thus, the audio-only interview — after our conversation, she agreed to appear in some b-roll shots.
She was asked, “If Hillary was in your neighborhood going door-to-door campaigning, and she came up to your door…”
“I’d let her in,” Broaddrick interjected. “Oh, I’d have a talk that I never had the nerve to before,” she said when she was asked about what she would do.
“I’d say you are an evil person. And do you remember what you did to me back then. And how on earth could you cover up for him all these years.
“I’d love to have a one-on-one — not with anybody else around — but just a one-on-one. If I knew she was coming I’d make a list.”
When asked if she would fear for her safety, she said no, “Not one-on-one. But what she can do to me through her power, that frightens me. One-on-one, no. I’d love to have that encounter,” she says.
Broaddrick says her first encounter with Hillary was in 1978, shortly after the alleged rape..."

TSA Paid $1.4 Million for App that Directs Travelers Left or Right in Lines

TSA Paid $1.4 Million for App that Directs Travelers Left or Right in Lines - Hit & Run : Reason.com:
"Anyone who has flown in the United States in the past 15 years or so knows the drill: A friendly agent or sub-contractor of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the demonstrably useless and expensive security-theater troupe created in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, directs you to go right or left at some point.
Recently, TSA started using an iPad or other high-tech gadgets in the process, the better to confound countless numbers of underwear bombers.
Did you know that such procedures are scientifically randomized via a particular "randomizer" program?
As Geek.com reports, the app that helps TSA agents direct us this way of that didn't come cheap.
The program itself cost at least $336,413.59 and the overall total for the project was around $1.4 million.
We know this thanks to developer Kevin Burke, who submitted a Freedom of Information Act request asking for details about the app.
And if you think paying over $336,000 for an app like this is ridiculous, well, that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
The contract for the TSA Randomizer app was won by IBM.
The total paid for the project is actually $1.4 million, but the cost is not broken down in the documents Burke received in response to his request.
It could be IBM supplied all the iPads and training as well as the app itself.
Even so, the cost of the project is crazy. It’s an app that is just randomly selects left or right.

Chalk and Awe

Chalk and Awe - WSJ:

If you find Donald Trump’s presidential campaign a source of pure despair, allow us to offer some mitigation. The campaign is having at least one salutary effect, as reported by the New York Times:
Students at several college campuses are clashing with their administrations and debating the limits of free speech after finding chalk messages voicing support for Donald J. Trump scrawled on campus property.
Last week [now the week before last], at Emory University in Atlanta, officials scrambled to respond to a student demonstration after roughly 100 messages were found on campus. The students felt that there was an anti-diversity subtext to the so-called chalking written on campus about Mr. Trump.
That description of the controversy illustrates the sheer insanity of 21st-century campus culture. An expression of support for a candidate is what is known in First Amendment law as “core political speech,” and there is no exception that permits censorship of any speech because it has “an anti-diversity subtext,” whatever that even means.
To be sure, Emory is a private institution, so that its administration is legally unconstrained by the First Amendment. But a regime of censorship runs counter to the Emory motto, Cor prudentis possidebit scientiam: “A wise heart seeks knowledge.” What does an unwise heart do? The Emory Wheel, a student newspaper, has the answer:
“I’m supposed to feel comfortable and safe [here],” one student said. “But this man [Trump] is being supported by students on our campus and our administration shows that they, by their silence, support it as well . . . I don’t deserve to feel afraid at my school,” she added.
But maybe this is, if you’ll pardon the expression, a teachable moment. Emory’s president, James Wagner, showed some spine in a meeting with the aggrieved students:
“What do we have to do for you to listen to us?” students asked Wagner directly, to which he asked, “What actions should I take?” One student asked if Emory would send out a University-wide email to “decry the support for this fascist, racist candidate” to which Wagner replied, “No, we will not.” One student clarified that “the University doesn’t have to say they don’t support Trump, but just to acknowledge that there are students on this campus who feel this way about what’s happening . . . to acknowledge all of us here.”
As the Times notes, Wagner eventually issued an equivocal official statement and an unequivocal unofficial one:
“As an academic community, we must value and encourage the expression of ideas, vigorous debate, speech, dissent and protest,” he wrote.” At the same time, our commitment to respect, civility and inclusion calls us to provide a safe environment that inspires and supports courageous inquiry.”
Mr. Wagner was then filmed scrawling a chalk message of his own: “Emory stands for free expression!”
“Thanks in large part to the Emory University students who pathetically panicked after seeing pro-Trump messages written in chalk on campus sidewalks, pro-Trump messages are now appearing on other college campuses,” the blog Legal Insurrection reported over the weekend. “The whole thing is going viral on Twitter under the hashtag #TheChalkening...”

Six things to know about the Panama Papers

Six things to know about the Panama Papers | World | DW.COM | 04.04.2016:
Who, what, where and when: The release of the so-called "Panama Papers" on offshore financial dealings of the wealthy, the famous and the powerful is being called the biggest leak in history.
Panama Papers Mossack Fonseca Webseite
What are the Panama Papers?
The Panama Papers are a cache of 11.5 million documents and 2.6 terabytes of information in the form of emails, financial spreadsheets, passports and corporate records from the law firm Mossack Fonseca that detail how powerful figures used banks, law firms and offshore shell companies to hide assets worth billions in offshore jurisdictions. The data leaked on Sunday lists almost 15,600 paper companies set up for clients who wanted to keep their finances secret, and spans the decades - from 1977 to the spring of 2016.
What is Mossack Fonseca?
In 2012, The Economist described Mossack Fonseca as a remarkably "tight-lipped" industry leader in offshore finance. The Panama-based law firm and corporate service provider is one of the world's largest providers of shell companies. The company has franchises all over the world that operate in tax havens like the British Virgin Islands. According to Germany daily Süddeutsche Zeitung, - who obtained the Panama Papers from an anonymous source - Mossack Fonseca "sells its shell firms in cities such as Zurich, London, and Hong Kong - in some instances at bargain prices; clients can buy an anonymous company for as little as $ 1,000 (880 euros)."
Who is the ICIJ?
The Washington-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists investigated the files that exposed the hidden financial dealings.
Founded in 1977 by US journalist Chuck Lewis, the ICIJ is a global non-profit network of about 190 investigative journalists in more than 65 countries who collaborate on in-depth stories. "Together, we aim to be the world's best cross-border investigative team," the group says on its website. Like in the present case, the ICIJ works with leading news organizations worldwide to release its findings.
Two years ago, an ICIJ investigation identified thousands of offshore holdings of China's elite in mainland China and Hong Kong.
Who is implicated?
The list of politicians and celebrities linked to secret offshore tax hideaways is long, and it's international. It includes current and former heads of state, the likes of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, British lawmakers, close associates of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iceland's Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson, martial arts movie star Jackie Chan, Argentine soccer megastar Lionel Messi, the families of some of China's top communist brass and Bollywood's Amitabh Bachchan - the "Big B."

Gun Violence Nearly Doubled in Chicago Over the Past Year

Gun Violence Nearly Doubled in Chicago Over the Past Year | The Daily Sheeple:
"Whenever pro-second amendment advocates try to argue that gun control will lead to disaster, the city of Chicago has always provided the perfect fodder for their arguments.
Despite having some of the most draconian gun laws in country, the city of Chicago has long been notorious for its mind-boggling murder statistics.
To the surprise of no one who supports gun rights, the latest statistics out of Chicago show that the city is still a prime example of what happens when you hinder gun rights for law-abiding citizens.
According to CNN, 141 people were murdered in Chicago during the first three months of the year, which is 71.9% higher than the 82 people who were killed in the same time frame last year.
Even more astonishing for a city that prides itself on tackling guns, is the fact that shootings during the first three months of the year have gone up 88.5%, from 359 in 2015, to 677 in 2016. In other words, gun violence has nearly doubled over the past year.
CNN interviewed several residents in Chicago about the explosion in violence, and they all seemed to blame it on the economy.
“If you really want to stop this epidemic of violence, the best way to stop a bullet is with a job” explained one resident.
While there is certainly merit to that, the economy isn’t the sole contributing factor to violence.
In fact, all crime rates declined in the United States following the crash of 2008.
Maybe it’s time for the city to admit that making it easier to own and carry a weapon would also alleviate their horrendous crime rates."

Fed Appeals Court Protects “Habitual Drunkards” from Deportation

Fed Appeals Court Protects “Habitual Drunkards” from Deportation - Judicial Watch:
"In what may seem like a bad joke, a U.S. federal appellate court has ruled that an illegal immigrant convicted of drunk-driving can’t be deported because federal immigration law discriminates against “habitual drunkards” like him.
The case involves an illegal immigrant from Mexico, Salomon Ledezma-Cosino, with at least one drunk-driving conviction, possibly more. Ledezma-Cosino has lived in the U.S. illegally since 1997 and has eight kids, five of them anchor babies born in America.
He works in the construction industry and has a criminal record.
Ledezma-Cosino drank about a liter of tequila every day for a decade, according to medical records cited in federal court documents, and has been diagnosed with acute alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver.
This man should be the poster child for deportation yet he remains in the country and is now further protected by a federal appellate court ruling.
That’s because this particular court, the notoriously leftist 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, believes the portion of federal immigration law that should get Ledezma-Cosino removed is discriminatory..."
