Here's Why the U.S. Military is in Trouble

Here's Why the U.S. Military is in Trouble:
"At a time when threats against America are growing, the U.S. military is facing a combat readiness crisis that jeopardizes its ability to protect the country...
Thornberry outlined five alarming facts caused by the readiness crisis:
  1. “The Air Force is short 4,000 maintainers and more than 700 pilots today.” It doesn’t matter how many planes the Air Force has, or how modern they may be, if they can’t fly. Without qualified mechanics to maintain the aircraft and properly train pilots to fly them, the Air Force will struggle to accomplish its mission.
Image result for U.S. Military is in Trouble cartoon
  1. “In 2015 the Navy had a backlog of 11 planes in depot, next year in [20]17 they are going to have a backlog of 278.” Readiness levels for the entire fleet have fallen as the Navy’s maintenance crews are being asked to work longer hours with less funding. More planes in maintenance mean fewer are available to meet mission requirements.
  1. “Less than one-third of the Army is ready to meet the requirements of the Defense Strategic Guidance—it’s supposed to be no less than two-thirds.” The Army is already at a historically small level, and much of what remains of the service is not ready for combat. If a major war were to break out, the U.S. Army simply isn’t ready.
  1. “Marine Corps aviation requires on average 10 hours of flight time a month and they are getting about four.” Like any skill, practice is essential. Pilots without practice make more mistakes, which become deadly when flying complex aircraft, especially when in combat. The lives of Marines are at greater risk because of these funding cuts.
  1. “Less than half of the Air Force combat forces are ready to face a peer competitor such as China and Russia.” While the U.S. military faces this readiness crisis, America’s potential adversaries are increasing defense spending and modernization efforts as U.S. spending declines. Read on!

Terror in Nice: When it comes to Terrorism, America is not a Serious Nation

Terror in Nice: When it comes to Terrorism, America is not a Serious Nation | National Review
"When the avowedly socialist Prime Minister of France, recently pilloried in the media for spending  $11,000 a month on his haircuts, can immediately say after the horror in Nice that his nation is under attack from Islamic terrorism, but the U.S. President cannot blame anything other than  “violent extremism” for the brutal terrorist attacks on our own soil, one sees how deeply unserious a country America has become.
Image result for Terrorism obamaAnd this is true not just among politicians, but in our whole public culture, which has ultimately permitted an dangerous, divisive, and shallow man as President Obama to occupy the highest office in the land.
“All of France is under the threat of Islamic terrorism,” said French President Francois Hollande in the immediate aftermath of the attack, showing more directness and forthrightness not only than the entire Obama administration, but even at many times, the Bush administration, which often preferred to talk “war on terror” without mentioning the source of the overwhelming majority of that terror.
We’ve fallen so far that a French socialist dandy is teaching us about resolve in the face of terror, just as previously a bunch of French leftist cartoonits at Charlie Hebdo, taught the simpering cowards in our mainstream media a lesson about the true purpose of and sadly, the ultimate price that must sometimes be paid for,  defending free speech and expression..."

Nottinghamshire Police force recognise misogyny as a hate crime

Nottinghamshire Police force recognise misogyny as a hate crime | Central - ITV News
Nottinghamshire Police has officially recognised misogyny as a hate crime. In an effort to make the county a safer place for women, the force has provided misogyny hate crime training to selected officers and staff for the past three months.
Image result for misogyny bill clintonThe force is the first in the country to adopt the separate misogyny hate crime category. Misogyny hate crime is classed under the new policy as "incidents against women that are motivated by an attitude of a man towards a woman, and includes behaviour targeted towards a woman by men simply because they are a woman".
Examples of incidents include:
  • unwanted or uninvited sexual advances
  • physical or verbal assault
  • unwanted or uninvited physical or verbal contact or engagement
  • use of mobile phones to send unwanted or uninvited messages
  • or take photographs without consent.
I'm delighted that we are leading the way towards tackling misogyny in all its forms.
It's a very important aspect of the overall hate crime work being conducted and one that will make Nottinghamshire a safer place for all women."

Extended Blackouts: Power Grid Completely Vulnerable to Sabotage: "America Could Go Dark"

Extended Blackouts: Power Grid Completely Vulnerable to Sabotage: "America Could Go Dark"
"As if there isn’t enough to worry about already, it seems there is new confirmation that our entire society is hanging by a thread.

The 21st Century is run off of electricity, and in the United States, that electric grid is woefully out of date – and that has left the country quite vulnerable. People’s daily lives depend upon reliable energy, and there are many, such as hospital patients, whose very survival depends upon electricity in the short term.

Image result for empBut in the event of a long-term outage, nearly everyone’s lives would be placed in jeopardy, as commerce, deliveries, fuel, communications and more would grind to a halt.

According to the Wall Street Journal made clear in their special report, the dated grid is completely vulnerable to attack:

The Bakersfield attacks last year were among dozens of break-ins examined by The Wall Street Journal that show how, despite federal orders to secure the power grid, tens of thousands of substations are still vulnerable to saboteurs.

The U.S. electric system is in danger of widespread blackouts lasting days, weeks or longer through the destruction of sensitive, hard-to-replace equipment.

Most substations are unmanned and often protected chiefly by chain-link fences. Many have no electronic security, leaving attacks unnoticed until after the damage is done. Even if there are security cameras, they often prove worthless. In some cases, alarms are simply ignored.

The vulnerability of substations was broadly revealed in a Journal account of a 2013 attack on PG&E’s Metcalf facility near San Jose, Calif. Gunmen knocked out 17 transformers that help power Silicon Valley; a blackout was narrowly averted. The assailants were never caught.
It isn’t just EMPs and natural disaster that poses a threat to the grid, but there is also the potential for attacks on individual power substations in the vast network of decentralized and largely unguarded power grid chain. A U.S. government study established that there would be “major, extended blackouts if more than three key substations were destroyed.”

Whether by criminals, looters, terrorists, gangs or pranksters, it would take very little to bring down the present system, and there is currently very little the system can do to protect against this wide open threat. As the WSJ notes:

Federal officials have long known about the vulnerability of electrical substations. A 1990 report from the federal Office of Technology Assessment warned that “virtually any region would suffer major, extended blackouts if more than three key substations were destroyed.”

[…] individual substations “if rendered inoperable or damaged could result in widespread instability,” or cascading blackouts in any of the three separate sections of the U.S. power grid.
As things stand, California is already warning residents to expect up to 14 days of blackouts during the summer due to overload in the system. Just imagine how much bigger the disaster could get if something were done intentionally.

This video shows what happened when a group of white hat hackers broke into a power station to demonstrate what they can do given the lack of security, and the potential for mischief:

Homeland Security has been engaging in drill scenarios with the private sector to prepare a response for if/when the grid does fail, but the simple truth is there would be no quick solution, and thousands or even millions of people could die in a large scale shutdown of the power system..."

WHO ARE FASCISTS IN THE 2016 ELECTION?
"The link connects to my conclusion. I begin with a look at the cultural, historical and literary roots then move to the current politics and 2016 election.
The roots matter. In early June Tom Sowell examined definitions, historical facts and demonstrated behavior as they relate to contemporary political actors, particularly President Obama.
A few of Dr. Sowell’s essential points:
Image result for liberal fascismIt bothers me a little when conservatives call Barack Obama a “socialist.” He certainly is an enemy of the free market, and wants politicians and bureaucrats to make the fundamental decisions about the economy. But that does not mean that he wants government ownership of the means of production, which has long been a standard definition of socialism.

What President Obama has been pushing for, and moving toward, is more insidious: government control of the economy, while leaving ownership in private hands. That way, politicians get to call the shots but, when their bright ideas lead to disaster, they can always blame those who own businesses in the private sector.
As for the historical record:
One of the reasons why both pro-Obama and anti-Obama observers may be reluctant to see him as fascist is that both tend to accept the prevailing notion that fascism is on the political right, while it is obvious that Obama is on the political left.

Back in the 1920s, however, when fascism was a new political development, it was widely — and correctly — regarded as being on the political left. Jonah Goldberg’s great book “Liberal Fascism” cites overwhelming evidence of the fascists’ consistent pursuit of the goals of the left, and of the left’s embrace of the fascists as one of their own during the 1920s. Mussolini, the originator of fascism, was lionized by the left, both in Europe and in America, during the 1920s. Even Hitler, who adopted fascist ideas in the 1920s, was seen by some, including W.E.B. Du Bois, as a man of the left.

It was in the 1930s, when ugly internal and international actions by Hitler and Mussolini repelled the world, that the left distanced themselves from fascism and its Nazi offshoot — and verbally transferred these totalitarian dictatorships to the right, saddling their opponents with these pariahs.
"Great summary. Now go read the whole thing."

Could Italy Bring Down the Euro?

Could Italy Bring Down the Euro?:
  • A move by Italy — the third-largest economy in the eurozone — to abandon the euro could strike a potentially fatal blow to the currency and to the bloc itself.
  • Meanwhile, at more than 130% of GDP, Italy has one of the biggest public debt burdens in Europe, second only to Greece.
  • "A perfect storm of slow or zero Italian economic growth, low interest rates and politically connected, often corrupt, lending have combined to create a situation where the Italian financial system is in need of a large rescue." — Mihir Kapadia, Sun Global Investments.
  • M5S blames the euro for Italy's woes, and many Italians agree.
...Mihir Kapadia of Sun Global Investments explains:
Image result for italy exiting eu cartoon"A perfect storm of slow or zero Italian economic growth, low interest rates and politically connected, often corrupt, lending have combined to create a situation where the Italian financial system is in need of a large rescue."
M5S blames the euro for Italy's woes, and many Italians agree.
Faced with a financial crisis of potentially epic proportions, the October vote could backfire on Renzi and turn into a referendum on the Italian government itself — and even on the euro.

Writing in the Financial Times, columnist Wolfgang Münchau, cautioned:
"The political dynamic in Italy is not much different from the one in the UK. The electorate is in an insurrectionary mood. The country has had virtually no productivity growth since it joined the euro in 1999. The Italian political establishment has until recently been as dismissive of its chances of losing the referendum as the British establishment was until [Brexit on June 23]. They are still dismissive of the chances of a Five Star victory — and will be until the moment it happens."

Why Venezuela putting its food supply under military control is so chilling

Why Venezuela putting its food supply under military control is so chilling:
"In the state of nature, force triumphs over all else.
Image result for venezuela food shortage 2016If societal progress is measured by movement towards voluntary individualism and away from coercion at the hands of strongmen, then by all accounts Venezuela is regressing into this decivilized state.
That is the takeaway given the news breaking this week that Venezuelan potentate President Nicolás Maduro is putting the country’s military in charge of its food supply.
Not even the most doe-eyed Bernie Sanders supporter could think it a wise or comforting decision to put the supply over a nation’s food in the hands of a defense minister.
As the Wall Street Journal details, “Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino…will be in charge of transporting and distributing basic products, controlling prices and stimulating production, according to a decree published Tuesday in the official gazette.”
...It can only be called rational from Maduro’s perspective insofar as control over the food supply is a proxy for total control over the people in a struggle to retain power.
...The State Department issued a statement last week that acknowledged Venezuela’s “extremely difficult” past year, but urged “leaders of all branches of the government to engage in the national dialogue required to effectively address your country’s problems.”
In other words, rather than issuing a call for solidarity with the people of Venezuela as they try to regain their dignity, liberty and rights, our Department of State is proposing throwing a life line to a dying socialist regime that is the avowed enemy of the United States..."

June Hottest Month On Record? It's Just One More Overheated Claim

June Hottest Month On Record? It's Just One More Overheated Claim | Stock News & Stock Market Analysis - IBD:
"A trusted -- by some -- federal agency says that this June was the hottest June on record in the Lower 48.
Many will take this as further evidence that man's greenhouse gas emissions are cooking the planet. Others will look at it and ask "what in the world are these people talking about?"
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said last week that "above-average temperatures spanned the nation from coast to coast, and 17 states across the West, Great Plains and parts of the Southeast experienced temperatures much above average."
Well, OK.
But what about those places where June was cooler than usual, or was at least nowhere near a record warm month.
Real Climate Science points out a few spots where it didn't get so hot in June and asks "where was this record heat located?"
It surely wasn't in Crosbyton, Texas, where June 2016 was cooler than many a June going back more than 100 years.
Nor was it in Albany, Ga.; Lexington, Va.; or Berkeley, Calif., or several other locations around the nation.
Real Climate Science also points out that, "averaged over the whole country, only 3.2% of June days were over 100 F, compared to 11% during June 1933."
Only 17.4% of weather stations reached 100 degrees this June "compared to 57.6% during June 1933."
One of the points that has to be taken from this is the foolishness of trying to determine an average temperature for a country, let alone an entire planet.
And it is indeed foolishness. Bjarne Andresen, a professor at the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen, says the concept of a global temperature is thermodynamically as well as mathematically impossible to establish.
"It is impossible to talk about a single temperature for something as complicated as the climate of Earth," Andresen, an expert in thermodynamics, says..."

Senator Whitehouse’s Dangerous Agenda | Economics21

Senator Whitehouse’s Dangerous Agenda | Economics21:
"On July 11, 19 Democratic senators, led by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), took to the floor to attack fossil fuel companies for engaging in a “web of denial” about climate change.
Senator Whitehouse and his like-minded colleagues are using climate change as a Trojan Horse to hide their environmental agenda and their hostility to the economic benefits derived from using fossil fuels.
Senator Whitehouse’s resolution claims that fossil fuel companies have engaged in a “misinformation campaign to mislead the public and cast doubt in order to protect their financial interest.”
It also claims that think tanks, public relations firms and other organizations have been funded to give legitimacy to this campaign and are part of this web of denial.
These senators base their allegation on a sound bite—“the science is settled”—that is derived from the radical tactics of activists like Saul Alinsky.
Image result for silence the oppositionSound bites are not evidence.
The International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which climate activists cite as the gold standard on climate science, does not claim that the science is settled.
In its most recent Assessment Report, it identifies a number of important climate factors and processes for which the state of knowledge is limited.
It ranks the level of confidence about 11 factors contributing to warming from very high to low.
Of the 11, only 2 are ranked “very high” and only 3 are ranked “high.”
This only represents 45 percent.
That is hardly sufficient for claiming settled science.
...The list of reasons why the science is not settled, and likely never will be, could go on, but these few examples are sufficient to make the case that Senator Whitehouse and his 18 other colleagues are not interested in facts and honest debate.
Their goal is to silence critics of the climate orthodoxy, which provides the ultimate rationale for environmental overreaction and the precautionary principle.
As one observer commented years ago, freeze or fry, wet or dry, the problem is always the same, fossil fuels and the solution is more regulation.
These senators with the support of the environmental lobby represent a clear and present danger not just to the first amendment but also to our system of government.
Environmental elites have for some time championed greater control by central governments.
At the 2000 climate change Conference of the Parties (COP), former French president Jacques Chirac called for global government—“For the first time, humanity is intuiting a genuine instrument of global governance…which France and the European Union would like to see established.”
More recently, the former head of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Christiana Figueres stated,

  • Democracy is a poor political system for fighting global warming.
  • Communist China is the best model”.

And lest anyone think that she simply misspoke, she also said, “The Industrial Revolution was also a transformation, but it wasn't a guided transformation from a centralized policy perspective.
This is a centralized transformation that is taking place because governments have decided that they need to listen to science.
So it's a very, very different transformation and one that is going to make the life of everyone on the planet very different”.
A world government modeled on the UN or EU is a scary thought.
Senator Whitehouse and his colleagues took an oath to “support and defend” the Constitution.
But history has demonstrated that silencing criticism and debate are the first steps in limiting freedom and liberty"

Why Detroit QLine may be more of a headache than a transportation convenience

Why QLine may be more of a headache than a transportation convenience:
"The $179.4 million project to add streetcars to Woodward was billed as “an unprecedented public-private partnership” that would vastly improve transportation in greater downtown Detroit.
But as crews get closer to finishing the QLine, it has become increasingly clear that the streetcars may cause more headaches than solutions and may benefit visitors at the cost of resident who rely on buses...
The QLine also may bump new bus rapid transit lines from Woodward.
In 2011, the U.S Department of Transportation stopped supporting the streetcars in favor of more practical bus rapid transit lines, which would send 70 speedy buses up and down Woodward, Gratiot and Michigan avenues.
Image result for q line construction detroitNevertheless, DDOT approved $37.2 million in federal funding for QLine.
The rest was privately funded.
The QLine, which also was billed as a faster alternative to buses, was supposed to shuttle passengers from New Center to downtown in 8 to 12 minutes.
Officials now concede the ride will take more than twice as long.
“Run time is expected at approximately 25 minutes from Grand Boulevard to Congress,” QLine spokesman Dan Lijana said.
That’s roughly the same time it takes a bus, which has more stops than the QLine..."
