Voter ID and the Real Threat to Democracy - WSJ:
"The Supreme Court concluded in 2008 that voter ID is constitutional and doesn’t impose an unreasonable burden on voters. But the recent decisions of three federal courts throwing out voter-ID laws in North Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin as discriminatory have put opponents of common-sense election reforms in raptures. These erroneous rulings twist the Voting Rights Act from a law intended to stop racial discrimination into one that transfers the power to determine routine election procedures—which the Constitution delegates to the states—to the judiciary."

Being Lazy Is a Sign of High Intelligence, Study Suggests - Slashdot
An anonymous reader quotes a report from The Independent:
Findings from a U.S.-based study seem to support the idea that people with a high IQ get bored less easily, leading them to spend more time engaged in thought. And active people may be more physical as they need to stimulate their minds with external activities, either to escape their thoughts or because they get bored quickly. Researchers from the Florida Gulf Coast University gave a classic test -- dating back three decades -- to a group of students. The 'need for cognition' questionnaire asked participants to rate how strongly they agree with statements such as "I really enjoy a task that involves coming up with new solutions to problems," and "I only think as hard as I have to." The researchers, led by Todd McElroy, then selected 30 'thinkers' and 30 'non-thinkers' from the pool of candidates. Over the next seven days both groups wore a device on their wrist which tracked their movements and activity levels, providing a constant stream of data on how physically active they were. Results showed the thinking group were far less active during the week than the non-thinkers..."

Salesforce exec shares a favorite interview question - Business Insider
"...If this isn't convincing enough, you might consider taking a cue from Ana Recio, the senior vice president of global recruiting at Salesforce.
Recio, who leads a global team of more than 350 people, hires more than 8,000 people a year, and has 20 years of hiring experience at tech companies like Salesforce and Yahoo!, tells Business Insider that she loves to kick off interviews by asking candidates: "What is your favorite pump up song, and why?"
"It may seem like just a fun icebreaker, but how they respond also allows you to get a deeper sense of them, and if they might be a good fit with your company's culture," she explains.
Luckily for candidates, there is no right or wrong answer to the question. Instead, how they answer can speak volumes about their personality and fit..."

Now The Obama Administration Is After Gunsmiths? - Forbes:
"My gunsmith has a lathe, a drill press, even a barrel reamer.
He uses them to repair guns.
To him, they are like a car mechanic’s welding equipment, drill and cutter tools.
He never thought drilling out a broken-off screw or grinding down a gun part to make a rifle’s action work smoother would define him as a “manufacturer.”
But now, according to the federal government, he is a manufacturer and is required to pay a $2,250 annual fee as mandated by the U.S. State Department’s Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC) regulations.
This is what the Obama administration is now saying in a rule change.
...Requiring these people to pay $2,250 every year will drive many of them out of business or underground. Perhaps that is the reason for the rule change from the Obama administration.
If there is another reason, they aren’t making it public.
...According to the Obama administration’s new definition of what constitutes a manufacturer, everything from bicycle repair shops to carpenters would be deemed “manufacturers” and therefore be subject to regulations and fees that companies that make products and import and/or export goods are subject to.
But those other businesses are not being defined as manufacturers.
So, as gunsmiths are being singled out, this is obviously more gun-control politics from the Obama administration..."

Another Act Of "Microaggression" Against Millennials; When Will The Brutality End? | Zero Hedge
"In the latest case of University Chancellors caving to the ridiculous demands of pampered Millennials fighting back against the "microaggresssion" of our establishments of higher education, the University of Wisconsin-Stout is being forced to take down two paintings that have graced the walls of their Harvey Hall since 1936.
The paintings which depict a French fort and fur traders with Native Americans canoeing the Red Cedar River are apparently "offensive" to the sensitive hearts and minds of the students on campus with the "Diversity Leadership Team" saying the paintings depict "acts of domination and oppression." Because of the offensive nature of the paintings, University Chancellor Bob Meyer decided they were only suitable for "controlled galley space" that could provide appropriate "context" for the viewer.

Because of the offensive nature of the paintings, University Chancellor Bob Meyer decided they were only suitable for "controlled galley space" that could provide appropriate "context" for the viewer.
Meyer discussed his decision to take down the paintings with Wisconsin Public Radio:
"There’s a segment of Native American students, that when they look at the art, to them it symbolizes an era of their history where land and possessions were taken away from them, and they feel bad when they look at them," Meyer said."So, we want to make sure that, really, what we decorate our hallways with and what we put in our hallways isconsistent with our values to try to attract more Native Americans to the university," Meyer said.
University artwork has hurt a lot of feelings of late as we recently pointed out in a post entitled "WTF Headline Of The Day: "Racist" Window Edition".
The offensive artwork in question in this case can be viewed below but we must warn our readers that these paintings are not intended for everyone and contain content that may be considered offensive to certain audiences, viewer discretion is advised:

From IJReview:
Ibtihaj Muhammad is the first American Muslim to compete in the Olympics wearing a hijab.And Muhammad, a New Jersey native, made some controversial comments about the U.S. just one day before the Rio Olympics began.“[I feel unsafe] all the time. I had someone follow me home from practice and try to report me to police. And this is right on 28th and 7th in New York City…I want people to know that as hard as [these racist incidents] are on me, they don’t come even close to things we’ve seen like the shooting in North Carolina or the rhetoric around the Khan family at the DNC.It’s ridiculous and we as a country have to change and I feel like this is our moment.”Then, in an interview with the Associated Press on Monday, Muhammad said she hopes that her appearance in Rio makes life “easier” for Muslims in America:“I’m hoping that with my first-time appearance as a member of Team USA here at the Olympics, I’m hoping that the rhetoric around the Muslim community will change,”

AME THAT PARTY! Virginia Mayor Richard Silverthorne Resigns After Meth-for-Sex Bust.
The mayor of Fairfax, Virginia, has resigned following his arrest last week for allegedly trying to exchange methamphetamine to undercover detectives in exchange for sex, city officials said Monday.
Mayor Richard “Scott” Silverthorne’s resignation will take effect on Thursday, according to a statement on the City of Fairfax website.
Silverthorne, 50, was arrested and charged with felony distribution of methamphetamine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia after a sting operation that had been underway since July led an undercover detective to the mayor, who provided detectives with methamphetamine.
The detectives had contacted Silverthorne through a website, where he promised them a “group sexual encounter” with men in exchange for the drugs, according to the Fairfax City Police Department.
"I really don’t care what Silverthorne does in his free time, but NBC News apparently cares enough to hide the fact that he’s a Democrat."

N.J. bill may ban eating, drinking, reading while driving - NY Daily News:
"Sipping coffee while behind the wheel in New Jersey could soon land you in hot water, if a proposed bill is approved.
The bill from Assemblyman John Wisniewski would bar motorists from “distracted driving,” defined as “any activity unrelated to the actual operation of a motor vehicle in a manner that interferes with the safe operation of the vehicle.”
The loosely worded bill aims to combat texting while driving — already illegal in New Jersey — but also seeks to fine motorists who eat, drink, groom or read behind the wheel, NJ.com reported.
Violators would face fines as high as $400 for a first offense and $600 for a second. More transgressions could lead to a 90-day license suspension and driving record points."

Not only do I not like what’s happening, I’ve seen this movie before and can tell you that it ends really badly.
The movie, of course, is Bridge on the River Kwai...
...For those who have forgotten or never known the plot of Bridge on the River Kwai, here’s a summary of the salient points:
The movie begins in 1943, in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in Burma run by the sadistic Colonel Saito. He announces to the prisoners that all of them, regardless of rank, will be working as slave labor constructing a railway bridge over the River Kwai that will connect Bangkok and Rangoon....Even as the British and Americans are plotting the bridge’s destruction, Nicholson is increasingly obsessed with its completion.
In his mind, a perfect bridge will prove to the Japanese how superior the British are, never mind that it will help the Japanese win the war.
He is so focused on this goal that he even convinces Colonel Saito to lend him Japanese labor to make the project go faster.
The movie’s dramatic finale begins when a drop in the water level exposes the wires that the commando team used to connect the explosives to the detonator. When Colonel Nicholson notices these wires, instead of keeping silent or otherwise aiding the commando team, he promptly notifies Colonel Saito.
The Japanese immediately attack the British commando squad.
Although Colonel Saito dies, so do three of the four members of the commando team.
Only Commander Shears remains to try to detonate the explosives.
Fatally wounded, he swims across the river, dying at Colonel Nicholson’s feet before he can trigger the explosives.
Nicholson realizes that Shears is his former, escaped campmate.
Only at this moment, with three commandos dead, a fourth dying, and a train full of Japanese dignitaries heading for an inaugural ride across the beautiful bridge he built, does Nicholson suddenly become aware where his obsession has led.
That results to the famous close-up of a horrified Nicholson saying “What have I done?”...

They’re going to prove to the world how wonderful they and their ideas are, never mind that their obsessive focus on ideological purity and their unwillingness to sully themselves by associating with a man as crude and unintellectual as Trump will hand victory to an ideology that will make it impossible for their ideology to function in America again for decades, at least.
And make no mistake: If Hillary wins, we are looking at an epic disaster.
As Dennis Prager, Hugh Hewitt, and other committed, principled, highly intelligent conservatives have realized, the time for ideological purity is over. In an existential situation, with a binary choice between bad and dead, morality demands that you choose bad.

President Hillary Clinton will:
- Turn the Supreme Court into an activist, hard-Left engine of permanent change;
- Narrow the First Amendment to the point of meaninglessness, giving government the final say over who gets free speech (and you can see what this will look like by visiting any college or university in America except for Hillsdale);
- Narrow the Second Amendment to the point of meaninglessness, giving government the absolute right to seize all privately held arms;
- Grant full amnesty and voting rights to all the illegal aliens already in America;
- Abandon any effort at controlling our Southern border;
- Continue to turn the American military into a vast social justice and climate change experiment;
- Continue to destroy the American economy by (a) funding crony-style climate change initiatives and (b) making it impossible for ordinary Americans to get affordable energy from clean coal, oil, and natural gas;
- Raise taxes to pay for her war against the climate;
- Deny the existence of Islamic fundamentalism, something exceptionally cruel, not only to non-Muslims killed by Islamists, but to those peaceful Muslims who need someone to partner with them to help bring about an Islamic reformation;
- Cultivate her close ties with rich, radical Islamists, aided by Huma Abedin (scion of the Muslim Brotherhood) and by all of her other long-standing Islamic funders;
- Turn her back on Israel, a nation she’s always approached with hostility, abandoning it to the Islamic/Arab savagery that surrounds it;
- Destroy the last remnants of a free market in America by tightening her cronyist connection to Wall Street and her regulatory control over businesses and individuals;
- Be exceptionally vulnerable to blackmail from all those nations that are sitting on her emails, both the 30,000 she destroyed, as well as the ones already in FBI hands; and
- Continue to divide America by focusing on victim groups in order to retain those groups’ fealty to the Democrat party. Read on!

For several years, farmers have watched as fresh water has been diverted from agriculture to save the small bait fish, which is easily bred in laboratories, but has disappeared from estuaries, partly due to predators and party due to saltier conditions.
...As the Sacramento Bee notes, “That’s no small amount: 200,000 acre-feet is equal to a quarter of ...Folsom Lake’s capacity, though not all the amount released would come from Folsom.”
California has suffered a drought over the past five years, and water restrictions remain in place in many areas despite ample rains in the northern part of the state this past winter due to El Niño."

Did Clinton emails doom Iranian nuke scientist to death?
Blog: Did Clinton emails doom Iranian nuke scientist to death?
"One of the non-classified Hillary Clinton emails released by the State Department last year may have convinced the Iranian government that a nuclear scientist who claimed he was kidnapped by the CIA was actually a defector and spy for the US.
At the time that the email was released, the press picked up on the bizarre story.
New Hillary Clinton emails released by the State Department appear to lift the curtain on the bizarre circumstances surrounding Shahram Amiri, an Iranian nuclear scientist who claims to have been abducted by the CIA.The just-released emails, which were sent to Clinton back in 2010, seem to support what State Department sources have long maintained: that Amiri was not abducted, but a defector and paid informant who changed his mind about helping the U.S.The emails also appear to offer insight into the department's plans to get Amiri back to Iran safely....In the email -- written two days before the CNN report -- Sullivan expressed fear of the media catching wind of the story, writing: "The gentleman you have talked to Bill Burns about has apparently gone to his country's interests [sic] section because he is unhappy with how much time it has taken to facilitate his departure. This could lead to problematic news stories in the next 24 hours. Will keep you posted."...
Amiri was arrested upon his return and tried for treason.
He was initially given a long prison sentence.
But something changed recently that prodded the Iranian government to call for his execution..."

Obama springs more prisoners than 9 presidents combined
Obama springs more prisoners than 9 presidents combined:
"President Obama on Wednesday commuted the sentences of another 214 convicted drug felons, mostly dealers, bringing his total to 562 inmates who he has freed under his executive power to end punishments.
And the White House says there are many more reprieves to come.
“Today’s 214 grants of commutation also represent the most grants in a single day since at least 1900,” wrote White House lawyer Neil Eggleston on the White House website. “That being said, our work is far from finished. I expect the president will continue to grant clemency in a historic and inspiring fashion.”"
