"A professor at Georgetown University is teaching his students that men do not need consent to have sex with women, and that slavery is justifiable under Islamic teachings.
Islamic Studies professor Jonathan Brown recently lectured at the International Institute of Islamic Thought, where he shared his alarming beliefs with students in attendance in his lecture, “Islam and the Problem of Slavery.”
...According to Lee, Brown’s lecture was supposed to revolve around slavery in Islam, but the lecturer moved its focus to criticize the United States, United Kingdom and China. Brown described slavery in these non-Muslim societies as brutal, which they were, but lauded the historically inhumane practice in Arab lands and Turkey.
...Brown stated that slaves were “protected by Sharia,” omitting the various atrocities committed by slave-owners.
Girls and women were forced into the sex trade and their male counterparts were often castrated.
“In general you don’t find the brutality that you see in American slavery,” said Brown, who described the historically common practice as “investments” and “walking venture properties” for slave-owners..."

"ANN ARBOR, MI - If you're at a bar or some other place of business in Ann Arbor later this summer and you notice a TV on with no closed captions, you can politely inform the owner it's a violation of law.
A new city ordinance taking effect July 1 requires activation of closed captioning on all televisions in use in places of public accommodation, including bars, hotel lobbies, restaurants, fitness centers and the like.
The City Council voted unanimously this week to approve the ordinance as recommended by the city's Commission on Disability Issues.
The idea behind it is to be more accommodating to people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Mayor Christopher Taylor said it's an important change and will make local establishments more accessible and properly situated for all people.
The ordinance does not require TVs to be turned on.
However, if a TV is on, then the closed captioning must be activated..."
