Half of America Wants the Other Half to Die in a Hurricane | Trending
"Hurricane Irma has left death and destruction in her wake and Hurricane Jose is right behind her promising more.
Image result for trump voters memeEntire islands have been destroyed, families torn apart, and property wiped out.
This crippling devastation so close to the last hurricane in Texas, from which people are still reeling, is tough to take.
These people require our unceasing prayers and help, not scorn and snark.
So who would be cold-blooded enough to savage hurricane victims?
Rabid sufferers of Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS). These are people who were so blindsided by a Clinton loss that they can't see past their election night rage and are wishing destruction on all the Trump voters in Florida along with Trump properties...
They're rooting...for the hurricane.

'Price Gouging,' For Lack Of A Better Term, Is Good | Stock News & Stock Market Analysis - IBD

'Price Gouging,' For Lack Of A Better Term, Is Good | Stock News & Stock Market Analysis - IBD:
"Economics: Florida grocery store shelves were empty and 40% of the gas stations in Miami were out of gas in advance of Hurricane Irene.
But at least no one is price gouging, right?
Image result for Price GougingFlorida, like other states, has a price-gouging law that bans retailers from jacking up prices for food, water, ice, petroleum products and other products during a state-declared state of emergency. Someone caught selling at prices that "grossly exceed" the average over the previous 30 days faces second-degree misdemeanor charges.
...But while Florida's price-gouging law might help protect residents from high prices during an emergency, it can't protect them from the immutable laws of economics.
Whatever the intent of these price-gouging prohibitions, the result is always the same: rampant shortages.
That's because they are, in effect, government-imposed price caps.
And price caps always produce shortages.
So, while Florida tries to stamp out price gouging, its grocery stores' shelves are empty, and gas stations are running out of gas.
...The truth is that while jacking up prices during an emergency seems unethical, it can be the best way to deal with an emergency situation.
High prices not only discourage hoarders, they also send up a flare to suppliers to rush more into production and bring more into the region.
...As George Mason University economist Tyler Cowen noted, "price gouging, despite its obnoxious-sounding name, is usually the best of a set of bad alternatives.""

Electromagnetic pulse attack on grid could ‘cripple’ society | Boston Herald
"North Korea has threatened to launch an electromagnetic pulse attack that could shut down the United States’ power grid — causing months of blackouts that could bring society to a halt, with rampant crime and social chaos.
Experts say the threat posed by an EMP — the side effect of an atmospheric nuclear detonation — is significant...
...North Korea released a statement saying the bomb “is a multi-functional thermonuclear nuke with great destructive power which can be detonated even at high altitudes for super-powerful EMP attack.”
An EMP attack would involve exploding a nuclear weapon high above the United States, creating high-amplitude currents that, like lightning, would race to any conductors within the weapon’s line of sight, such as electric transmission lines, causing power and telecom systems to malfunction or fail in a cascading fashion.
“EMP is one of a small number of threats that can hold our society at risk of catastrophic consequences,” reads a report by the Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse Attack, established by Congress in 2001.
“It has the capability to produce significant damage to critical infrastructures and thus to the very fabric of U.S. society, as well as to the ability of the United States and Western nations to project influence and military power...”

What Should China, South Korea, and the U.S. Do About North Korea?

What Should China, South Korea, and the U.S. Do About North Korea?

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un (AP Photo/Vincent Yu, File)
"...On the political side, there's useful peace in The National Interest headlined, "Here Is What Chinese Scholars Think about the North Korea Crisis."
The author, Lyle Goldstein, admits up front that "it has not been possible to develop a relatively comprehensive typology of Chinese assessments regarding the Korean nuclear issue."
China's contradictory approach might best be summed up here:
The scholar Li Kaisheng [李开盛] sees no basis for cooperation because of different interests and a fundamental lack of strategic trust between Beijing and Washington. Li explains that one of the major restraints on the United States possible use of force against North Korea has been “China’s opposition and even [the possibility] of Chinese counter-attack" [中国的反对甚至反击]. He also straightforwardly explains that China will not accept the removal of the North Korean ruling regime, because that would mean U.S. military power directly on China’s border and the loss of China’s “strategic buffer” [战略缓冲地带].
Beijing is generally assumed to hold the key to "solving" the problem of North Korean nukes — to whatever extent it can be solved.
The problem is that China apparently wants it all.
To see what I mean, here's a (very) broad outline of possible outcomes:
• The status quo.
• Chinese political or military action against North Korea's nuclear program, up to and perhaps including installing a new regime.
• U.S./R.O.K. military action short of regime change.
• U.S./R.O.K. military action including regime change, and/or forceful reunification with the South.
• There's also the possibility of something like a repeat of the Six Party Talks and a diplomatic resolution. But given that Pyongyang has not and will not live up to any promises to abandon or even limit its nuclear program, this option is really just part of the Status Quo option.
Let's take the main four options one at a time..."

Lawyer: In Campus Rape Disputes, the Accused Should Not Be Presumed Innocent - Hit & Run : Reason.com
Image result for angry feminists"The mask slips once again. Laura Dunn, a lawyer and prominent advocate for sexual assault victims, admitted that Title IX—the federal statute behind the Education Department's efforts to compel universities to adjudicate sexual assault—does not require investigators to presume that accused students are innocent.
Dunn thinks that's a good thing.
"A presumption of innocence advantages the accused only, and Title IX requires equity," Dunn wrote in an email to Inside Higher Ed
"No presumption should be made either way, and schools should engage in an inquisitorial process to determine the truth rather than artificially favor the accused going into it."
The presumption of innocence is considered so fundamental to principles of justice that it is enshrined by the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
In the U.S., the Supreme Court has held that the presumption of innocence is implicit in the Bill of Rights..."

How annual mileage impacts auto insurance rates in all 50 states | Clark Howard
"When it comes to the price you pay for auto insurance every month, mileage really does matter!
According to a new InsuranceQuotes.com study, drivers who increase their annual miles from 5,000 to 20,000 see an average rate increase of 9%.

How mileage and location affect car insurance rates

“When determining rates, auto insurers typically use mileage as a major factor.
But the amount varies considerably depending on where you live.
Consumers who live in states with the biggest hikes have more opportunity to save by driving less,” said Laura Adams, senior insurance analyst at InsuranceQuotes.com.
“In California, increasing your mileage from 5,000 to 20,000 causes a premium increase over 25%.”...
This chart illustrates how increased mileage affects annual auto insurance premiums in all 50 states:

For the Open Campus Initiative to invite Murray to campus and give him an unchecked platform from which he can participate in and legitimize a tradition of dehumanization of marginalized people—the same tradition that is responsible for the tragedy of Charlottesville (and America’s entire history of racial trauma)—is fundamentally at odds with who we should be as a College. A Federal Agency's Bogus Battle to Keep College Grads Out of Work | Economics21:
"This article originally appeared on The Hill.
Image result for students shockedOne of the most efficient ways for American employers to fill entry-level positions is through college-campus recruiting and similar programs, which bring the employers directly to younger workers.
Such programs are extraordinarily convenient for the students, too, as they allow them to interview with multiple employers in a short time-frame at a location that’s convenient for them.
It’s very possible that many readers of this article got their first job through just such a program.
But in recent years, federal bureaucrats at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) have declared that such programs should be reclassified as a presumptively illegal form of age discrimination, even when an employer does not intend to discriminate because of age.
According to the EEOC, college recruiting may be age discrimination because most students and recent graduates are under the age of 40, and recruiting them therefore has a “disparate impact” on older workers..."

"Mayor de Blasio: you know you want the heavy hand of government, and so do I
Steven Hayward at Powerline calls our attention to an interview and quote from New York’s Mayor Bill de Blasio.
It’s quite revealing not just about de Blasio, but about the leftist mindset about the role of government, our legal system, and what people themselves want [emphasis mine]:
Q: In 2013, you ran on reducing income inequality. Where has it been hardest to make progress? Wages, housing, schools?

Image result for socialismde Blasio: "What’s been hardest is the way our legal system is structured to favor private property. I think people all over this city, of every background, would like to have the city government be able to determine which building goes where, how high it will be, who gets to live in it, what the rent will be. I think there’s a socialistic impulse, which I hear every day, in every kind of community, that they would like things to be planned in accordance to their needs. And I would, too. Unfortunately, what stands in the way of that is hundreds of years of history that have elevated property rights and wealth to the point that that’s the reality that calls the tune on a lot of development…

…Look, if I had my druthers, the city government would determine every single plot of land, how development would proceed. And there would be very stringent requirements around income levels and rents. That’s a world I’d love to see, and I think what we have, in this city at least, are people who would love to have the New Deal back, on one level. They’d love to have a very, very powerful government, including a federal government, involved in directly addressing their day-to-day reality.

It’s not reachable right now. And it leaves this friction, and this anger, which is visceral."
There’s an awful lot packed in there, isn’t there?
First and foremost, we have the fact that de Blasio feels comfortable enough to express these sentiments openly rather than hide them..."

Hackers are actively targeting US and European power grids:
Image result for targeting US and European power grids"...Symantec reports that a group it calls Dragonfly is targeting energy and power sectors in the US and Europe, with the intention of both learning how these facilities operate as well as eventually gaining control over the systems.
This isn't the first time we've heard of Dragonfly.
Back in 2014, Symantec and other researchers identified the group as responsible for a series of attacks on US and European energy systems that stretched from 2010 to 2014.
...Now, the group could be trying to gain access to energy systems for all-out attacks.
Symantec notes that one of the most troubling aspects of this campaign is the use of screenshots. In several US attacks, hackers were able to capture screen grabs of actual control panels for these energy systems.
"That's exactly what you'd do if you were to attempt sabotage," Eric Chien, a Symantec security analyst, told Wired..."
