"Earlier this year, the LA Times reported: "TSA quietly launches new 'enhanced' pat-down procedure." 
The Times noted that TSA would not describe precisely how the new procedure is different from the old one: 
"TSA officials declined to detail the new universal procedure or the previous pat-down tactics, but the industry is bracing for passenger unhappiness about more invasive searches."
...After going through a metal detector in the TSA-Pre security line, I was randomly selected to see if a machine would detect explosives on my hands. 
My palms were swabbed and the machine detected explosives, even though I had not recently handled a gun, flammable liquids, or any sort of explosives...
...So what precisely does the "enhanced" pat-down seem to entail, you ask?
Well, since you asked, 

• the agent runs his hand inside a passenger's waistband and also runs his hand up the back of each leg until he "meets resistance" 
• and then does the same from the front of each leg. 
• And then the TSA agent swipes the front of his hands 3 or 4 times right over the zipper area of one's Gap Outlet comfort-stretch khakis. That last part was the most unpleasant.

For what it's worth, this isn't the story of an agent who didn't know how to do a pat-down. 
The agent described exactly what he was going to do before he did it and seemed to be simply carrying out the government's policy. 
I'm sure he'd like a job that involves less groping..."

...Unfortunately for proponents of the requirement, menu labeling does not seem to reduce the amount of calories people consume.
...Since the Nutrition Facts label was mandated in 1990, the American population has got fatter, rather than thinner.
While the potential benefits of the labeling requirement are uncertain, the provision would come with substantial costs that would be passed on to consumers through higher food prices.
The FDA estimates that covered establishments will incur $562 million in costs through 2020..."

Clinton also blamed ‘sexism and misogyny’ for her loss, and claimed that a majority of Americans felt ‘we really don’t want a woman commander in chief’.
At no point did Clinton admit that it was her own scandal ridden history that could have contributed to her loss.
Hillary was also asked about her infamous ‘deplorables’ comment, to which she revealed she actually still stands by..."

...As areas of Texas, Louisiana, and Florida face a long and historically expensive recovery from Harvey and Irma, they need to learn all they can from Katrina.
One of those lessons was the importance of immigrant labor in the rebuilding process.
During these times, immigration will relieve pressure on the market for lower-skilled labor. 
As the demand for clean-up and construction labor grows, workers have to come from somewhere. There are some willing native-born Americans, but from past experience it’s clear that there aren’t enough Americans who both need the work and are willing to do it for the current wage.
...One way to gain that additional labor without labor costs rising as high would be to open the door to more immigrants. 
Higher local wages in the immediate aftermath of the storm will make it worthwhile for workers to come from Mexico and the Caribbean.
That influx of labor will push wages back down, closer to where they were before..."

"In “What Happened,” Clinton falsely alleged that Wisconsin’s new voter ID law prevented 200,000 people from voting.

Hillary Clinton is blaming her Wisconsin loss on a voter ID law that she alleged helped “reduce turnout by 200,000 votes,” in the state. The only problem for Clinton is that independent fact checkers have blasted the study she cited as false.

In “What Happened,” Clinton wrote:

“In Wisconsin, where I lost by just 22,748 votes, a study from Priorities USA estimated that the new voter ID law helped reduce turnout by 200,000 votes, primarily from low-income and minority areas.”

Clinton’s claim that Wisconsin’s new voter ID law reduced turnout by 200,000 votes is “mostly false,” according to the independent fact-checking outlet PolitiFact.

PolitiFact scored this claim as “mostly false,” in May when Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) alleged, “Voter turnout in 2016 was reduced by approx. 200,000 votes because of WI’s photo ID laws.”

PolitiFact wrote:

A report she cites from a Democratic candidate-supporting group says a decline in voter turnout between the 2012 and 2016 presidential elections in Wisconsin was entirely due to the state’s new photo identification requirement for voting.

But experts say that while photo ID requirements reduces turnout to some extent, they question the methodology of the report and say there is no way to put a number on how many people in Wisconsin didn’t vote because of the ID requirement.

We rate Baldwin’s statement Mostly False.

Editor’s note: Last week, we secured an interview with a recently retired U.S. Navy captain who spent 20 years at sea and 10 in the Pentagon, working on process improvement projects. He asked to remain anonymous due to a number of political considerations and a need for privacy. For the purposes of this interview, we will call him Captain F.

InMilitary: Thank you, sir, for sitting down with us and giving us your time. As you’re painfully aware, there have been a number of at-sea incidents lately, most notably the two separate collisions of the USS Fitzgerald and USS John McCain with merchant vessels. Sailors’ lives have been lost. There are conspiracy theories of Russian spoofing of GPS and other nonsense. Our most pressing question is: Why is this happening now and with such frequency?

Captain F: First, the big picture. The nation, like every nation, has to balance guns and butter. Just a fact of life. Limited resources and unlimited requirements, needs and wants. Congress and the executive branch must lead that discussion based on the threat and the capabilities of the required force to meet those threats.

After each war, although they do not term it as such (actually, they did after the collapse of the Berlin Wall), there is always a great deal of pressure to provide a “peace dividend” – or more precisely, to move funding from the military to social projects. I have been through two significant drawdowns in my service from 1974-2003.

IM: So it’s a leadership issue?

Captain F: What gave out was leadership. 

The admirals did not put their careers on the line and object about anything. They rolled over to save themselves. 

That is the big picture. 

From a more localized perspective, the direct in-line people, COs, XOs and MCPOs, also rolled over.

There is no way on my ships that would have happened. 

We always had direct leadership. 

Leadership that was there, present and capable. 

I am willing to bet that those ships involved in incidents with merchants had all their sexual orientation, transgender training, and environmental training all completed at the expense of the safety and operational training.

If you put the emphasis on social issues, you get a social force. 

If you put it on operational issues, you get an operational force..."

The words everywhere.
They have become America's favourite, bittersweet and articulate bumper sticker.
They were used by President Bush to dispatch his bombers to the mountains and deserts of Afghanistan - but they resonate further than that.
For they are also the words that closed a remarkable conversation on 11 September between a man called Todd Beamer and Lisa Jefferson, a telephone switchboard operator.
The words are: 'Let's Roll'.
Jefferson was in a suburb of Chicago, at the headquarters of the GTE phone company, when she took the call that, she now says, changed her life. Beamer, the caller, was aboard the hijacked and doomed United Airlines Flight 93 from Newark to San Francisco.
Beamer, who didn't want to worry his pregnant wife, had called GTC, the company that provides the telephone service on United Airlines flights.
He and Jefferson talked for 13 minutes, during which they recited together the Lord's Prayer and Psalm 23 - 'Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.'
Beamer had ideas about that valley, and how many dead it should claim. 
For as Flight 93 was gnarled off course, he and other passengers learnt through an extraordinary series of calls they made to relatives and partners that their plane was one of a quartet turned into terrorist guided missiles.
And in the hopeless claustrophobia of a tubular steel trap 30,000 feet up, they tried to defy death.
By the time Beamer dialled GTE, his aircraft had been re-routed by the terrorists towards Washington, and perhaps on course for the White House, or the Capitol.
Beamer and other passengers decided to take on the hijackers and wrest control of the plane. 
The recent release of tapes from the cockpit voice recorder indicates just how close they came to doing so..."
