Dianne Feinstein says not clear any rule could have prevent Las Vegas shooting in 'gun-happy' America:
"Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., a longtime advocate of tougher gun regulations, said Sunday that it was not clear what rules could have prevented the tragic shooting in Las Vegas last week. She nevertheless called for further regulations in the wake of the tragedy.
"I don't know. I would have to take a good look at that," Feinstein responded when asked on NBC's "Meet the Press" what regulations could have prevented the mass shooting at the Mandalay Resort and Casino that claimed the lives of 58 concert-goers. "I am not sure there is any set of laws that could have prevented it.""

Rape victim’s attacker gets joint child custody
"A Sanilac County Circuit judge has granted parenting time and joint legal custody of an 8-year-old boy to a convicted sex offender who allegedly raped the child’s mother nine years ago.
Christopher Mirasolo, 27, of Brown City was awarded joint legal custody by Judge Gregory S. Ross after DNA testing established paternity of the child, according to the victim’s attorney, Rebecca Kiessling, who is seeking protection under the federal Rape Survivor Child Custody Act. A hearing is scheduled for Oct. 25.
...Ross disclosed the rape victim’s address to Mirasolo and ordered Mirasolo’s name to be added to the child’s birth certificate — all without the victim’s consent or a hearing, according to Kiessling.
...According to Kiessling, Mirasolo forcibly raped and threatened to kill her client, now 21, nine years ago when the woman was 12.
Mirasolo was 18 when the incident occurred in September 2008.
“She, her 13-year-old sister and a friend all slipped out of their house one night to meet a boy and the boy’s older friend, Mirasolo, showed up and asked if they wanted to go for a ride,” said Kiessling. “They thought they were going to McDonald’s or somewhere.
“Instead, he tossed their cellphones away, drove to Detroit where he stole gas from a station and then drove back to Sanilac County, where he kept them captive for two days in a vacant house near a relative, finally releasing the older sister in a park.
He threatened to kill them if they told anyone what happened.”
...While the assault potentially carried a penalty of life or any term of years but not less than 25 years, Mirasolo was given a plea deal by the Sanilac County Prosecutor’s Office for attempted third-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Mirasolo was sentenced to one year in the county jail but only served six and a half months before early release so he could care for his sick mother, Kiessling said.
“She (client) and her family was told first-time sex offenders weren’t sent to prison because people come out worse after they go there,” said Kiessling.
In March 2010, Mirasolo committed (ANOTHER!!) a sex assault on a victim between the ages of 13 and 15 years old.
He served only four years for that second offense, Kiessling said..."

"A while ago a human-interest story from South Africa was reported internationally.
As described in The Wall Street Journal:
"On Aug. 4, Graham and Sheryl Anley, while yachting off the coast of South Africa, hit a reef, capsizing their boat.
As the boat threatened to sink and they scrambled to get off, Sheryl's safety line snagged on something, trapping her there.
Instead of freeing his wife and getting her to shore, Graham grabbed Rosie, their Jack Russell terrier. (One media account reported that Sheryl had insisted that the dog go first).
With Rosie safe and sound, Graham returned for Sheryl.
All are doing fine."
Since the 1970s, I have asked students if they would first try to save their drowning dog or a drowning stranger.
And for 40 years I have received the same results: One third vote for their dog, one third for the stranger, and one third don't know what they would do..."

EXCLUSIVE- Sen. Durbin Spills the Beans on Amnesty: Admits 'DREAM Act' a Ploy for Open-Ended Amnesty - Breitbart:
"Durbin’s admission that the Dream Act is open-ended raise the stakes for the Republican Party because the vast majority of likely beneficiaries lean Democratic — and because subsequent chain migration could deliver millions of lower-skilled, government-dependent legal immigrants to the polling booths in 2028 and 2032."

Michigan seniors learn they CAN lose their home on a reverse mortgage | Bridge Magazine
"Sifting through a stack of letters on her kitchen table from a reverse mortgage company, Linda Pryczynski recalled how the nightmare began.
“My husband saw it on one of those TV commercials that’s on all the time,” the Muskegon resident said.
“He thought it would be a good idea.”
In 2007, her husband Warren took out a reverse mortgage on their modest duplex to pay off the remainder of an old debt of $100,000, a loan for a truck and for household expenses.
Her husband died in 2016 at age 94, leaving behind tax and mortgage debt Pryczynski said she couldn’t possibly pay off.
Facing foreclosure, Pryczynski filed for bankruptcy earlier this year and fears the prospect she could lose her home.
That’s because she was not named in the reverse mortgage – a home loan available, and marketed to, older Americans – leaving her no protection at the time of his death..."

"The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is angrily condemning a memo released today by Attorney General Jeff Sessions that it describes as "an all-out assault on LGBTQ people" creating "a sweeping 'license to discriminate'" in furtherance of President Donald Trump's "cynical and hateful agenda."
...They should be comforted, then, by the revelation that virtually everything in the document is merely a restating of existing law and Supreme Court precedent.
...The principle that Americans don't forfeit their rights when they enter into the public square was recently upheld in 2014's Hobby Lobby ruling, while the principle that government can't dictate a church's hiring practices (at least when it comes to "ministerial" positions) was unanimously reaffirmed in 2012's Hosanna-Tabor..."

"Could the story behind the "Trump dossier" be the Rosetta Stone of Russian manipulation of our electoral process in 2016?
There is a strong and justifiable suspicion that the dossier was the critical bit of evidence that persuaded the FISA Court to reverse itself and permit monitoring of American associates of Donald Trump.
The dossier was originally begun as an opposition research project for Republican rivals of Trump, then funded by Democrats, and allegedly finally funded by the FBI.
We already know that some of the wild accusations in it were demonstrably false.
The House Intelligence Committee long has been looking into allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, and so far, it has come up with nothing.
As in zero specific evidence.
This was admitted by no less than Rep. Jackie Spier, a veteran Democrat member of the House of Representatives.
It is obviously worth investigating, then, how that dossier came to be created in the first place, and how it was used by various organs of the United States government, if there is interest in getting to the truth behind Russia's attempts to affect our elections.
Yet the FBI is refusing to hand over documents that have been subpoenaed by the House..."

Detroit firefighter fired for bringing watermelon to station - Story | WJBK:
"DETROIT (WJBK) - Earlier this month, 41-year-old Robert Pattison went to introduce himself to his fellow firefighters at Engine 55 at Joy and Southfield in Detroit. Second Battallion Chief Shawn McCarty calls it a tradition for firefighters.
"It's not mandatory, it's voluntary," he says. "You come in bearing gifts.
The usual gift is doughnuts, but you are allowed to bring whatever you want to bring in."
And Pattison, a probationary firefighter, decided to bring a watermelon wrapped in a pink ribbon. We're told some African-American firefighters were instantly offended, since 90 percent of the people who work at Engine 55 are black.
...In a statement Jones says: "There is zero tolerance for discriminatory behavior inside the Detroit Fire Department. On Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017, at Engine 55, a trial firefighter (probationary employee) engaged in unsatisfactory work behavior which was deemed offensive and racially insensitive to members of the Detroit Fire Department.
