Newspeak runs wild: Abortion declared ‘heart of the issue of the right to life’:

Image result for flickr commons images United Nations"Now ECLJ’s American affiliate, the American Center for Law and Justice, is warning that the committee is moving forward with its pro-abortion agenda and “is about to impose a universal legalization of abortion by manipulation and in the name of the right to life.”

While the decision isn’t expected to be final for some time, since discussion is scheduled to continue at meetings in March 2018, where assisted suicide and euthanasia will be added to the ideology protected by “the right to life,” the move is cause for concern, ACLJ said."

The Wages of Social Justice Is Death | Trending
"In the aftermath of the Ferguson riots in Missouri and the Freddie Gray fiasco in Baltimore, the decriminalization of crime in the name of "social justice" -- long a goal of the cultural-Marxist Left -- got fully underway.
The result was exactly what anyone not fully invested in Critical Theory would have expected:
Calling violence in Baltimore “out of control,” Mayor Catherine Pugh ordered 30 agency heads to meet every morning at police headquarters, and to make crime reduction the top mission not only of police, but also of health workers, housing officials and public works crews.
Image result for Violent crimeThe mayor ordered the directors of more than half of the city’s 55 departments to report to meetings daily at 8 a.m., when they will plan with Police Commissioner Kevin Davis where weeds should be cut, lead paint covered and drug houses boarded up and job applications can be handed out, among other tasks.
Pugh appeared at City Hall Thursday flanked by agency heads. “Violence in the city is out of control,” she said. “I want every neighborhood to know I am extremely concerned and focused on reducing violence.” Killings in the city have surged past 300 this year for a third year in a row. Violent crime is up 13 percent over last year, and reports of groups of youths attacking people apparently at random have dominated recent local news cycles.
Baltimore, a city whose best years ended more than a century ago, is a prime example of what happens when citizens are categorized by skin color or cultural background, and then have differing standards of behavior applied to them by what should be an impartial justice system.
Instead of "social justice," the outcome is social disruption, mistrust, resentment, lawlessness and, if left unchecked, anarchy and civil war.
The Marxists not only know this, they desire it, which is why they press so hard for it..."

Undoing the Dis-Education of Millennials | NewBostonPost

Undoing the Dis-Education of Millennials | NewBostonPost
"I teach in a law school.
For several years now my students have been mostly Millennials. Contrary to stereotype, I have found that the vast majority of them want to learn.
But true to stereotype, I increasingly find that most of them cannot think, don’t know very much, and are enslaved to their appetites and feelings.
Their minds are held hostage in a prison fashioned by elite culture and their undergraduate professors.
They cannot learn until their minds are freed from that prison.
This year in my Foundations of Law course for first-year law students, I found my students especially impervious to the ancient wisdom of foundational texts, such as Plato’s Crito and the Code of Hammurabi.
Many of them were quick to dismiss unfamiliar ideas as “classist” and “racist,” and thus unable to engage with those ideas on the merits.
So, a couple of weeks into the semester, I decided to lay down some ground rules.
I gave them these rules just before beginning our annual unit on legal reasoning.
Here is the speech I gave them.

How's the Middle-Class Doing Under the European Welfare State?

How's the Middle-Class Doing Under the European Welfare State?
How’s the Middle-Class Doing Under the European Welfare State?

"According to progressives like Bernie Sanders, European nations have wonderfully generous welfare states financed by high tax rates on the rich.
But they’re wrong about how those welfare states are financed. Yes, tax rates on the rich are onerous, but not that much higher than in the United States. Instead, the big difference between America and Europe is that ordinary people pay much higher taxes on the other side of the Atlantic.
The US Has the Most “Progressive” Tax System
Indeed, I’ve previously cited Tax Foundation data showing that the United States arguably has the most “progressive” tax system in the developed world. Not because we tax the rich more, but simply because we impose comparatively modest burdens on everyone else.
And now we have some new evidence making the same point. Joseph Sternberg of the Wall Street Journal has some very sobering data on how the German tax system imposes a heavy weight on poor and middle-income taxpayers.
Europeans believe their tax codes are highly progressive, giving lower earners a break while levying significant proportions of the income of higher earners and corporations to fund generous social benefits. But that progressivity holds true only for direct taxes on personal and corporate income. Indirect taxes, such as the value-added tax on consumption and social-security taxes (disguised as “contributions”), are a different matter. The VAT disproportionately affects lower earners, who spend a higher proportion of their incomes..."
As you can see, high payroll taxes and the value-added tax are a very costly combination.
And the rest of Europe is similar to Germany..."

Socialism: Venezuela's Minimum Wage Crashes to Under $4 per Month:

Despite dictator Nicolás Maduro’s five minimum wage hikes over the course of 2017, the monthly minimum wage of 177,507 bolivares is equivalent to $3.41, working out at just over two cents an hour, according to latest real value exchange rates."

Florida Appeals Court Upholds City's Veggie-Garden Ban - Reason.com
"Late last month, I had the opportunity to discuss my recent book, Biting the Hands that Feed Us: How Fewer, Smarter Laws Would Make Our Food System More Sustainable, before a Seattle-based group of family and consumer scientists, many of them retired.
During my talk, I focused in part on a series of city ordinances around the country that ban people from gardening in their own front yards.
Image result for Front Yard Vegetable GardenAs almost always happens, these particular laws, among the countless dozens I discuss in the book, raised the most ire among the audience:
"Why would any city do this?
How can a city do this?
I hope these people are fighting back!"
One of the most egregious examples I highlighted comes from an ongoing case in Miami Shores, Fla. There, Hermine Ricketts and her husband, Laurence Carroll, had kept a nicely manicured vegetable garden in their front yard for nearly two decades.
Then, in 2013, Miami Shores adopted an ordinance that banned vegetable gardens, and vowed to fine violators each day they failed to comply with the law.
The couple sued, arguing, as a local CBS affiliate put it, "that the ordinance ran afoul of the Florida Constitution, including that it violated their privacy rights and their right to acquire, possess and protect property."
Last year, a Florida state court upheld the vegetable-garden ban, on grounds that aesthetic reasons—the city thinks vegetables are ugly—are sufficient justification for a city to ban vegetable gardens..."
