Cost for California bullet train system rises to $77.3 billion:
"The California bullet train project took a sharp jump in price Friday when the state rail authority announced the cost of connecting Los Angeles to San Francisco would total $77.3 billion, an increase of $13 billion from estimates two years ago, and could potentially rise as high as $98.1 billion.

U.S. Media Long Carried Putin's Water - Odd Given Today's Hysteria | RealClearInvestigations
U.S. Media Long Carried Putin's Water - Odd Given Today's Hysteria | RealClearInvestigations:
"...In the United States, the Russian-state media entity partnered with the Washington Post until 2015 and with the New York Times, which confirmed it still bundles the insert into its regular paper.
...Russia Beyond, as the insert was renamed in 2017, serves as a “gateway for all things Russia -- from culture, travel, education, language, ways to do business, and much more.”
Only a small disclaimer right below the masthead, in light typeface, explains that it’s an advertising feature.
...So it turns out that, like Facebook, the New York Times and Washington Post were among those taking money to distribute Russian propaganda.
How much money exactly?
Neither newspaper would disclose financial details.
But there are indications it was a significant amount — and far more than Facebook received.
In 2008 the Daily Telegraph was reported to have earned nearly 40,000 pounds a month (perhaps $57,000 to $80,000) to distribute the insert.
Russia Beyond likely paid several million dollars to the Times and Post combined over more than a decade.
By comparison, Facebook was paid roughly $100,000 by Russian-linked disinformation sources during a nearly two-year period..."

Despite what CNN says, there's nothing cool about socialism
Despite what CNN says, there's nothing cool about socialism:
"My grandmother grew up in Ukraine, which was then a part of the USSR — the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. After waking each morning, she checked to see if any of her family members died during the night. Many of her compatriots were already dead because Joseph Stalin, the Soviet leader, implemented a mass starvation program.
Known as the “Holodomor,” the goal of the policy was to starve Ukrainians into submission. It worked as intended: Stalin murdered perhaps four million Ukrainians. (For this reason and others, Ukrainians are a bit prickly when asked if their accent is Russian.)
My grandmother only escaped this torture when she, along with the Russian man who would become my grandfather, were kidnapped by the Nazis and taken to Germany as slave labor. Thus, they stopped living the Soviet Socialist dream and began experiencing the National Socialist dream, instead."

‘Keep your damn mouth shut …’ ABC tries to get Dolly Parton to trash Trump and her answer is brilliant
‘Keep your damn mouth shut …’ ABC tries to get Dolly Parton to trash Trump and her answer is brilliant:
"Reaching all the way back to the iconic 1980 movie “9 to 5,” which featured Dolly Parton, ABC News tried in vain to get country music legend to denounce President Donald Trump by likening him to the sexist boss in the film.
“The sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical portrayed so effectively in that movie by actor Dabney Coleman hasn’t exactly disappeared from the culture,” said Nightline correspondent David Wright. “We have a president of the United States who said the things on that bus.”
That a “journalist” can espouse such rank bias without a trace of shame is another matter altogether, but Parton proved to be a little too sharp for Wright’s taste.
“I’m not addressing that. I do not get into that,” the singer declared.

Waters promises 'reparations' if Dems take over in 2020:

What used to be an extreme position - reparations to black people for slavery - is now entering the mainstream of Democratic party thought and could become a reality once the Democrats regain power....
Rep. Maxine "Mad Max" Waters, appears to want to make it a cornerstone of a run for the presidency in 2020.
WATERS: “He’s a bully — he has a bully mentality. We need someone in the presidency who not only has good sense but understands diplomacy and understands what we need to do to have peace in this world so we can all look forward to the possibility that we’re someday going to have a world that’s about peace and justice and respect for individual liberty.”
RYE: “Is that your stump speech for 2020? — Is she running? Is she running?”
...
WATERS: “I’d be happy to do that. That’s no problem. In order to get where we need to go on this issue and other issues, we really got to understand that 2018 is important in taking back the House and taking back the Senate ... If we want to get to the point where we can get reparations, we’ve got to have the power to do that, Number 1, by having a supportive president would be wonderful, but taking back the House would be absolutely wonderful ... I need to take back that House so that we can have a majority in that committee.”

DOJ to release Fast and Furious details Holder kept hidden
DOJ to release Fast and Furious details Holder kept hidden:
"Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Wednesday that documents related to the failed Fast and Furious federal gun-running program that former Attorney General Eric Holder kept hidden are going to be released.
Katie Pavlich at Townhall noted Holder was voted “in civil and criminal contempt of Congress” for his actions.
Obama invoked executive privilege in June 2012 to prevent the release of the documents after the courts had said they could be publicized.
The DOJ said Wednesday the documents will be turned over to the House Oversight Committee.
“The Department of Justice under my watch is committed to transparency and the rule of law. This settlement agreement is an important step to make sure that the public finally receives all the facts related to Operation Fast and Furious,” Sessions announced."

Statue of Marion Barry, controversial former mayor, unveiled in Washington | Fox News:
"To some in Washington, D.C., he was a “living legend” who advocated for the city’s poor.
To others he was a controversial figure remembered for being re-elected mayor despite serving a prison sentence for possession of crack cocaine.
On Saturday, an 8-foot-high bronze statue of former Mayor Marion Barry was unveiled on Pennsylvania Avenue in the nation’s capital, just blocks from the White House.
The statue, designed by artist Steven Weitzman, was ordered by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, Washington's Fox 5 reported.
The estimated $250,000 cost was covered by a combination of public and private funds, the Washington Business Journal reported..."

Food, Virtue Signalling, and Narcissistic Supply Part II | Declination
Food, Virtue Signalling, and Narcissistic Supply Part II | Declination:
"A few days ago, the media attacked Donald Trump for his habit of ordering well done steaks.
Naturally, I had a lot to say on the topic, as snobbery of any form grates on the nerves.
Food snobbery signals superiority of taste.
And then there is the sort of Dunning-Kruger-esque desire to signal intellectual superiority by barfing word salad like the privileged cisnormative heteropatriachal conspiracy, or some bullshit.
"A few days ago, the media attacked Donald Trump for his habit of ordering well done steaks.
Naturally, I had a lot to say on the topic, as snobbery of any form grates on the nerves.
Little did I realize that Nicholas Nassim Taleb was going down a similar road at more or less the same time.
He captures the essence of food snobbery here:I once had dinner in a Michelin-starred restaurant with a fellow who insisted on eating there instead of my selection of a casual Greek taverna with a friendly owner operator, his second cousin as a manager and his third cousin once removed as a receptionist. The other customers seemed, as we say in Mediterranean languages, to have a cork plugged in their behind obstructing proper ventilation, causing the vapors to build on the inside of the gastrointestinal walls, leading to the irritable type of decorum you only notice in the educated upper classes. I note that, in addition to the plugged corks, all men wore ties.Dinner consisted in a succession of complicated small things, with microscopic ingredients and contrasting tastes that forced you to concentrate as if you were taking some type of exam.
You were not eating, rather visiting some type of museum with an affected English major lecturing you on some artistic dimension you would have never considered on your own...
It’s fascinating because it’s so true.
Most high-end restaurants I’ve been to operate more or less as Taleb describes them.
The server will spin a line of bullshit about the wine pairings, lecture us on the acidity of this or that, and attempt to sell us on the exclusivity of the place.
Everything is unnecessarily complex.
...And it makes you think.
How much of what they say or do isn’t even based on their own preferences, but based on some kind of desire to signal superiority?
Social Justice is signalling moral superiority. Food snobbery signals superiority of taste.
And then there is the sort of Dunning-Kruger-esque desire to signal intellectual superiority by barfing word salad like the privileged cisnormative heteropatriachal conspiracy, or some bullshit.
I mean, if you don’t like white guys, I’d actually prefer if you just said that.
You’re still a racist shit, mind you, but at least you’re not a pretentious racist shit.
Put simply, if you like well done steak, order away. If you prefer pizza to Michelin’s, get yourself a pizza.
And if all your friends are virtue signalling their food superiority, you probably ought to get new friends."

Ex-British Spy Knew Who Funded Dossier; FBI Told Secret Court Something Different | Sara A. Carter
Ex-British Spy Knew Who Funded Dossier; FBI Told Secret Court Something Different | Sara A. Carter
Former British spy Christopher Steele was informed months after accepting the job to compile a dossier on then-candidate Donald J. Trump that the Hillary Clinton Campaign and the Democratic National Committee were paying the bills but that’s not what the FBI told the secret FISA court when it sought a warrant to spy on one of Trump’s campaign volunteers.
This bit of explosive information was revealed in an expose on Steele by The New Yorker’s Jane Mayer but the implications for the FBI are profound.
Why?
Because the bureau explicitly stated in its Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Application to the secret court that Steele was unaware of who backed Fusion GPS, the firm which hired him, for the research.
Steele, however, claimed in the expose titled Christopher Steele, The Man Behind the Trump Dossier that he did know who was paying his bill..."

‘We’re not afraid’: Sessions reacts to calls for 2nd special counsel
‘We’re not afraid’: Sessions reacts to calls for 2nd special counsel:
"Washington soon could face the upheaval of a second special counsel – an investigator of the investigators – to probe the FBI and Justice Department investigations of alleged Trump campaign collusion with Russia in the 2016 election.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions, told Fox News’ Shannon Bream Wednesday he would “consider” making the appointment.
The Russia investigations, including special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe, were prompted primarily by an anti-Trump “dossier” of largely unverified political dirt financed by the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee that was used to obtain a warrant to spy on a Trump campaign adviser."

Maddow Seethes Over Trump Leading Possible Peace Talks With North Korea
"...Yet over at MSNBC, host Rachel Maddow was anything but enthused by the idea as she spewed skepticism and threw shade at the commander-in-chief for accepting North Korea’s offer.

"...Yet over at MSNBC, host Rachel Maddow was anything but enthused by the idea as she spewed skepticism and threw shade at the commander-in-chief for accepting North Korea’s offer.
Towards the beginning of her bitter rant, Maddow seemed to question the President’s intelligence and/or knowledge of history for taking the meeting:
You might think another president in this circumstance, you can imagine a president asking himself or herself, “why has no other American president ever agreed to do this? Why has no sitting American president ever met with a leader from North Korea? Why has that never happened in all the decades North Korea existed as a nation? Should I take that to mean that this might be particularly risky or even an unwise move?”
Maddow whined about how Trump wasn’t doing what most presidents and even most people would do in approaching the situation.
“I think a lot of people probably suspect tonight that those are not the kinds of questions that this president asked himself before agreeing to this meeting,” she said. “But this is the president we have and he said yes to North Korea.”
But meanwhile, this is the same MSNBC journalist that fawned over President Obama for the Iran nuclear deal. “[It’s] the major foreign policy achievement, not only of this presidency, but of this American generation,” she obnoxiously declared at the time.
Maddow also gushed about how Obama had reached out to the dictatorial government of Cuba..."
