She called his elevator joke offensive. He called her complaint ‘frivolous.’ Who’s right? - The Washington Post:
See the source image"“Ladies’ lingerie.”
It was a lame, outmoded joke — the sort of thing you say in a crowded elevator to alleviate the discomfort of being jammed among strangers, an artifact of the days of fancy department stores with operators announcing the floor stops.
Those two words — the speaker remembers saying “ladies’ lingerie,” a passenger who was offended recalls hearing “women’s lingerie” — have turned into the latest exemplar in the academy of political correctness gone wild.
The episode, which has not been previously reported, occurred last month in San Francisco at the annual meeting of the International Studies Association. Richard Ned Lebow, a professor of political theory at King’s College London and the 2014 recipient of ISA’s distinguished scholar award, made the remark after someone in his elevator called out to ask for floor requests.
Simona Sharoni, professor of women’s and gender studies at Merrimack College in Massachusetts, took offense..."

"Summary: A new study reports the locus coerleus, a brain network that controls our ability to focus while under stress, appears to weaken as we age.
This may explain why we find it more difficult to focus as we get older.
Older adults appear more easily distracted by irrelevant information than younger people when they experience stress or powerful emotions– and a specific network in the brain recently identified as the epicenter for Alzheimer’s and dementia may be to blame.
A USC-led study finds that seniors’ attention shortfall is associated with the locus coeruleus, a tiny region of the brainstem that connects to many other parts of the brain.
The locus coeruleus helps focus brain activity during periods of stress or excitement..."

Homogeneous: The Political Affiliations of Elite Liberal Arts College Faculty | National Association of Scholars:
"In this article I offer new evidence about something readers of Academic Questions already know: The political registration of full-time, Ph.D.-holding professors in top-tier liberal arts colleges is overwhelmingly Democratic.
Indeed, faculty political affiliations at 39 percent of the colleges in my sample are Republican free—having zero Republicans.
The political registration in most of the remaining 61 percent, with a few important exceptions, is slightly more than zero percent but nevertheless absurdly skewed against Republican affiliation and in favor of Democratic affiliation.
Thus, 78.2 percent of the academic departments in my sample have either zero Republicans, or so few as to make no difference..."

Before Tuesday election, compare property tax rates in your Michigan county | MLive.com:
"As you consider property tax requests, you may wonder how your property tax rate compares to others in your county.
It's a more complicated question than you may think, since many cities and townships have multiple school districts in within their boundaries, and villages add another layer of taxation.
...In addition, communities have two property tax rates: the homestead rate for owner-occupied owners and a higher nonhomestead rate for commercial properties and second homes.
This database allows you to compare the current millage rates in any Michigan county.

You also can just look up the rates for your city, township or village, or compare the rates within your school district..."

Connecticut state Senate passes bill giving electoral votes to presidential candidate who wins popular vote | TheHill:
See the source image"The Connecticut state Senate on Saturday voted in favor of a measure to give the state’s electoral votes to the presidential candidate who wins the popular vote.
The move puts the state in a position to become the 11th, in addition to Washington, D.C., to join an interstate compact to pool their Electoral College votes for the candidate who wins the popular vote.
...Democratic Gov. Dannel Malloy is expected to sign the legislation, according to the report.
With the addition of Connecticut’s seven electoral votes, the compact would have 172 in total.
For the compact to go into effect nationally, it would need 270 electoral votes – the number needed for a candidate to win the presidency.
The nationwide effort to form the compact gained traction after George W. Bush won the 2000 presidential election without winning the popular vote and took on new life after the 2016 election.
President Trump won the Electoral College, but Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by nearly 3 million votes."
