Outrage-inducing AP story on Army ‘discharging’ immigrant recruits has some pumping the brakes – twitchy.com
"We’re not entirely sure what to make of this AP story after having read it.
It includes plenty of heart-wrenching quotes from those who’ve been affected, and it’s getting passed around a whole lot Thursday.
But is it a major scandal or not?

Like we said, the tweet managed to stir up plenty of outrage.

And it does sound horrible.

Service in the U.S. military should be a path to citizenship.

But is the AP’s tweet reflective of what’s actually going on?

A lot have their doubts.

As a growing number of Democrats and their allies call for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), it’s important to remember that the overwhelming majority of illegal immigrants arrested by the agency have criminal convictions. In 2017 immigrants with criminal convictions accounted for 74% of all arrests made by ICE, according to government data used by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center in a study published earlier this year. Sixteen percent of those arrested by ICE had pending criminal charges and only 11 % had no known criminal convictions or charges, the Pew analysis found.
Nearly 60,000 illegal aliens deported by ICE last year were convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol and another 57,438 for possessing or selling dangerous drugs such as opioids.

"Far-left academics are suggesting the “endangered state of American liberal democracy” under President Donald Trump will require the Democratic Party to defy political norms and pursue “emergency steps” in order to create a permanent progressive majority and “thoroughly disempower” anyone opposed to their agenda.
“Democrats should plan to treat political norms, when and if they’re in charge of a unified government, the way Trump and the Republicans do,” declared Rob Goodman, a political theorist at McGill University, writing for Politico.
“They should be readying a program of systematic norm-breaking for partisan advantage—but only if they are willing and able to follow it through to its conclusion.”
Specifically, Goodman cities a new book by political scientist David Faris, It’s Time to Fight Dirty: How Democrats Can Build a Lasting Majority in American Politics, as a framework for the type of “systematic norm-breaking” he is advocating for the Democratic Party to undertake.
...Such a radical power grab by the Democratic Party would “require party leaders to pursue policy changes that will be ridiculed by their opponents as outrageous affronts to democratic decency and received by their own voters with puzzlement or even shock.”...

A Michigan State University sociology professor claims that the "abstract liberalism" of many Latino and Latina college students serves to reinforce "colorblind racism."

Maria Isabel Ayala interviewed 50 Latino(a) students at Midwestern University, and was dismayed to find that they attribute their success to hard work and self-reliance while shunning affirmative action.

A professor at Michigan State University is alleging that Latino students perpetuate “colorblind racism” due to their commitment to meritocracy and free market values.

Sociology professor Maria Isabel Ayala made the argument in a recent study published by the Journal of Latinos and Education, having received $25,000 from the school to conduct the research.

In the memo, Congress’s top law enforcement official, Sergeant-at-Arms Paul Irving, along with Chief Administrative Officer Phil Kiko, wrote, “We have concluded that the employees [Democratic systems administrator Imran Awan and his family] are an ongoing and serious risk to the House of Representatives, possibly threatening the integrity of our information systems and thereby members’ capacity to serve constituents.”

"According to DNC Chairman Tom Perez, the future of the Democratic Party is socialism.
The real surprise is that he admitted publicly what people outside his party already knew.
...Since her defeat of Rep. Joe Crowley, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez has been the toast of the Democratic Party (perhaps as an over-reaction).
Her platform was akin to that of Bernie Sanders promising single-payer health care, tuition-free college, and a guarantee of a federal job for everyone who can’t find work.

During the interview with Press, Mr. Perez his daughters made him excited about Ocasio-Cortez:

A Gallup poll conducted in June reveals 55 percent of American adults believe the best days for the country are “ahead of us.”
Those who said the best days are “behind us” came in at 41 percent.
The last time Gallup asked this question — December 2012, when President Barack Obama was president — only 47 percent of respondents answered “ahead.” That survey’s results also showed 50 percent of respondents answered “behind.”

"On July 4th Americans will celebrate 242 years of independence and the enduring success of a bold experiment in personal liberty.
On July 5th the United Kingdom will remind Americans of one particular benefit of independence.
Thursday will mark 70 years that English patients have tolerated a single-payer health-care system.
The website of the U.K.’s health bureaucracy is asking for applause:

The National Health Service is turning 70 on 5 July 2018. It’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate the achievements of one of the nation’s most loved institutions, to appreciate the vital role the service plays in our lives, and to recognise and thank the extraordinary NHS staff – the everyday heroes – who are there to guide, support and care for us, day in, day out.

It’s a particularly odd moment for self-congratulation, just as government investigators begin to collect evidence on what appears to be an appalling abuse of patients.

This week the BBC reports:

A UK-wide inquiry into a contaminated blood scandal that left at least 2,400 people dead will look at whether there was a cover-up by the authorities and if documents were destroyed.

Treatments including blood transfusions infected thousands of patients with HIV and hepatitis C in the 1970s and 1980s.

It has been called the worst treatment disaster in the history of the NHS.

That last judgment could be open to debate.
News of this investigation follows closely on the heels of another scandal involving the stunning misuse of pain medication.
Last month London’s Mirror newspaper noted:

Relatives of patients who died in the Gosport hospital scandal... told of their fury over the needless and avoidable deaths and demanded a police investigation.

They spoke after a report revealed more than 650 were killed by overdoses of drugs over 11 years in one of the biggest scandals ever to hit the NHS...

...As America prepares to celebrate its independence, here’s hoping for health-care freedom for patients all around the world.

Their health should no longer be subject to the decisions of politicians in London, Little Rock or anywhere else."

The Obama administration granted citizenship to 2,500 Iranians, including family members of government officials, while negotiating the Iran nuclear deal, a senior cleric and member of parliament has claimed.
Hojjat al-Islam Mojtaba Zolnour, who is chairman of Iran’s parliamentary nuclear committee and a member of its national security and foreign affairs committee, made the allegations during an interview with the country’s Etemad newspaper, cited by the country’s Fars News agency.
He claimed it was done as a favor to senior Iranian officials linked to President Hassan Rouhani, and he alleged the move sparked a competition among Iranian officials over whose children would benefit from the scheme.

Prof asks students to ‘find something’ to celebrate on 4th

A University of Northern Colorado professor told students that she hopes they can “find something to celebrate” on Independence Day despite “a ton of ugliness in our nation’s past and present.”

While she did not specify the "ugliness" to which she was referring, her Twitter page is rife with examples of the "social problems" she sees in America, from the Second Amendment to immigration enforcement.

A University of Northern Colorado professor told students that she hopes they can “find something to celebrate” on Independence Day despite “a ton of ugliness in our nation’s past and present.”

“Happy 4th of July on Wednesday,” Kyle Nelson wrote in an email to students in her Sociology 170--Social Problems class.
“Despite all the social problems we are facing and despite a ton of ugliness in our nation's past and present, I hope each of us can find something to celebrate or honor or at least reflect on over the holiday.”...
