Anti-violence protesters shut down Dan Ryan: 'Today was the attention-getter, but now comes the action' - Chicago Tribune
"The showdown between police and the organizers of a march against gun violence culminated Saturday in the shadow of the 76th Street overpass on the Dan Ryan Expressway.
For weeks, the Rev. Michael Pfleger said his intention was to shut down the busy South Side expressway for a demonstration designed to focus a spotlight on crime, joblessness and poverty plaguing city neighborhoods.
Chicago police urged him to use a neighborhood street instead of the interstate.
Illinois State Police threatened arrests.
...After about an hour, with protesters pressing toward the police line and traffic squeezing by in single file, officers agreed to close off the remainder of the lanes.
...The full blockade lasted about an hour, with northbound traffic at a standstill and southbound travelers gawking at the scene throughout the morning.
Authorities reported no arrests.
“We came out here to do one thing: to shut it down,” Pfleger said. “We came here to get their attention. Hopefully we got their attention. …
Today was the attention-getter, but now comes the action.”...

Wait–How Many Immigrants Are On Welfare Again? - Matt Vespa
"This is the land of opportunity, and anyone who wants the come here can…legally.
That’s not the issue.
See the source imageFor the Trump White House, it’s been their stated position to shift our immigration policy toward allowing more high-skilled workers into this country.
As for the families of the low-skilled working immigration population in the country, 51 percent (76 percent counting immigrant-led households with children) are collecting some sort of check from our welfare services.
Is that good?
No.
Does that mean we shut it all down?
No.
...About 51% of immigrant-led households receive at least one kind of welfare benefit, including Medicaid, food stamps, school lunches and housing assistance, compared to 30% for native-led households, according to the report from the Center for Immigration Studies, a group that advocates for lower levels of immigration.
Those numbers increase for households with children, with 76% of immigrant-led households receiving welfare, compared to 52% for the native-born...."

Is President Trump already winning the trade war with China? - CBS News
"After months of threats and gamesmanship, President Trump's tariffs on $34 billion worth of Chinese industrial imports took effect a minute after midnight Friday.
It's the latest in a line of protectionism aimed at the U.S. trade deficit with China, which totaled nearly $600 billion in 2017, and includes tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum as well as items like washing machines and solar panels.
And much more has been threatened.
See the source imageMr. Trump said on Thursday that another $16 billion worth of tariffs against China are coming in two weeks -- and U.S. total alone could reach $550 billion in the next few months.
The actions appear to be having the intended effect, if at the cost of pushing up inflation (prices for washing machine in the U.S. have spiked 16% in recent months, for example).
The U.S. trade imbalance with China in May totaled $43.1 billion, down from the $47.2 billion posted in March; it's the smallest monthly deficit since October 2016 and caps the largest three-month reduction in 10 years..."

Looking For Evidence That Democrats Are The Real Racists?
"Modern-day liberals like to parade around as if they have the moral high-ground against President Donald Trump, whose alleged racism makes him a disgrace to the values of the United States.
But liberals most recently supported a candidate with a storied history of racist connections and statements: Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Because of her cozy relationship with the mainstream media, Clinton’s bigoted history was swept under the rug while she was on the campaign trail in 2016. Here are some of her greatest racist hits:
Here is Crooked H in her own words professing that former West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd to be her friend and mentor. Robert Byrd was an avowed racist and leader of the Ku Klux Klan who was celebrated as a hero by Democrats for years despite his history as a vile hatemonger.
Crooked H also admires Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger and received an award in her honor. Sanger’s diabolical plan – aided by politicians such as Hillary Clinton – to push abortion as eugenics has resulted in the slaughter of millions of black babies in the womb.
This is a holocaust that Adolf Hitler could have only dreamed of..."

In Minnesota (of course, where else!), a non-profit organization is teaching refugees to ride bicycles.
Sounds like a nice thing to do, until you read the description of ‘Cycles for Change’ on their website. (Emphasis is mine)

Cycles for Change is a non-profit organization working at the intersection of social justice and the bicycle movement.
We are grounded in the values of equity, justice, inclusion and self-empowerment.
We believe it is essential to establish gender equity and safe(r) spaces for underrepresented and marginalized people on bikes. Cycles for Change centers femme, trans, women, and gender non-conforming peoples; and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color; and youth within our work.
Our goal is to create platforms that authentically cultivate leadership development and social consciousness through bicycles and community involvement. Cycles for Change implements a variety of programs to accomplish our goal. Face-to-face connection and creating a welcoming environment are central to all of our programs.

Shock: Wages and Jobs Soar at American Businesses 'Hit' by Metals Tariffs | Breitbart

Image result for trump winningShock: Wages and Jobs Soar at American Businesses 'Hit' by Metals Tariffs | Breitbart:
"When President Trump on the first day of March said that the U.S. would impose a 25 percent tariff on imported steel and a ten percent tariff on imported aluminum, many economists predicted that this spelled trouble for the industries that rely on steel and aluminum for their products.
...Yet there are few signs that the tariffs are having a negative effect on America’s metal using industries.
In fact, American businesses that make the most use of metals are adding jobs at a rate that is four times as fast as the broader economy, according to data from the Department of Labor.

  • The fabricated metals sector–where workers transform metal into intermediate or end products other than machinery, computers and electronics, and metal furniture–added jobs in March, April, May and June.
  • ...In June alone, fabricated metals added 7,000 jobs.
  • Machinery manufacturing added jobs...
  • Transportation manufacturing, the sector that includes automakers and aerospace, added jobs...

The bus then jumped the curb, plowing through fence posts and shrubbery toward the three people before striking the home on the 9800 block of Frankford Avenue and coming to a stop, police said.
Derbyshire was visiting for his daughter’s wedding, neighbors said..."

  • Randolphnurina---We need to outlaw Buses, ban them from big cities. No one has a "Right" to drive a bus that kills people.
  • Curmudgeon---If I didn't have to work, I would love to station myself on a corner on E. Market St. and compile a spreadsheet with the date, time, bus number and the number of times buses run red lights -- just on Market St. They sound their horns to let pedestrians know not to step off as they will be barreling through the light. Courteous, no? I have lived in Center City for over 20 years and am appalled by the number of times I see public vehicles running red lights. I am surprised more accidents like this haven't happened.

Yes, it's "The B"... but could easily be the NYT-----Tim Tebow Suspended For Using Performance-Enhancing Bible Verses

The Babylon Bee | Your Trusted Source For Christian News Satire.Tim Tebow Suspended For Using Performance-Enhancing Bible Verses:
"BINGHAMTON, NY—League officials confirmed Thursday that Double-A baseball player and devout Christian Tim Tebow has been suspended for using performance-enhancing Bible verses both on and off the field.
Tebow was spotted injecting the encouraging Bible passages into his morning devotional in the team’s locker room and was reported to appropriate authorities.
He is barred from playing in the league until a full investigation of his Bible-reading activities can be conducted.
“The league has a zero-tolerance policy on Bible verses that inspire and encourage a player to do his best and play for the glory of God, and thus bestow an unfair advantage,” league investigator Mack Columbeau said in a press conference.
“We will be looking into this matter objectively and completely before rendering a final judgment on Mr. Tebow.
If he has violated league policy, he’ll be punished appropriately.”
According to sources close to the matter, Tebow had looked around to make sure no one was in the locker room, but had forgotten the closed circuit cameras.
He then flipped to the “highly illegal” PEVs Philippians 4:13 and Joshua 1:9 and slowly read through them and their appropriate contexts, before hiding his Bible contraband back in his baseball bag and trotting out to the field for practice.
“The evidence is pretty convincing—this doesn’t look good for Tebow’s career,” Columbeau added."

Mike Rowe Hits Hard for Fatherhood | Intellectual Takeout

Mike Rowe Hits Hard for Fatherhood | Intellectual Takeout
"Parents "have put their own happiness above the best interests of their kids."
See the source image"If you’ve followed Intellectual Takeout for any length of time, you’ll know that Fatherhood is a regular topic.
You’ll also probably recognize that it’s not a popular topic in the culture.
The Ivory Tower declares patriarchy as one of the great sins of the West.
Hollywood and Madison Ave. do their parts to mock and belittle fatherhood, often portraying fathers as buffoons and fools
And government, many would argue, has created systemic forms of oppression that work against fathers.
Yet, in the face of it all, more and more people are beginning to question the narrative.
Here’s Mike Rowe’s recent take on the issue:
A couple years ago, when Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were getting divorced, Jolie was quoted as saying, ‘It never even crossed my mind that my son would need a father.’
I was struck by her comment, and I remember wondering how many other Americans might share her view. At the time, I didn’t think many. But today, I’m convinced the number is significant. I'm also amazed at how quickly fatherhood has fallen out of favor. Can you imagine a celebrity - or anyone for that matter - saying such a thing just twenty years ago?
This week’s episode of RTF [Returning the Favor] is about a guy named Carlos who found an effective way to deprogram bullies. Please watch it. It's a great story about a great guy making a real difference around a serious issue. It occurred to me though, half way through filming, that bullying – like so many other social ills in today’s headlines – isn’t really a problem at all; it’s a symptom. In my view, a symptom of a society that seems to value fatherhood less and less.
The facts seem pretty clear.
  • 63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes – 5 times the average. (US Dept. Of Health/Census)

  • 90% of all homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes – 32 times the average.

  • 85% of all children who show behavior disorders come from fatherless homes – 20 times the average. (Center for Disease Control)

  • 80% of rapists with anger problems come from fatherless homes – 14 times the average. (Justice & Behavior, Vol 14, p. 403-26)

  • 71% of all high school dropouts come from fatherless homes – 9 times the average. (National Principals Association Report)

  • 43% of US children live without their father [US Department of Census]
Is it really so surprising to learn that a majority of bullies also come from fatherless homes? As do a majority of school shooters? As do a majority of older male shooters?..."
