"With Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, as a hub, the world's first global research network into climate change denial has now been established. 
Building on a brand-new research publication showing the links between conservatism, xenophobia and climate change denial, the network will study how the growth of right-wing nationalism in Europe has contributed to an increase in climate change denial.
Scientific awareness of the greenhouse effect, and human influence on the climate, has existed for over three decades. 
During the 1980s, there was a strong environmental movement and a political consensus on the issue, but in recent years, climate change denial - denying that changes to the climate are due to human influence on the environment - has increased.
"Two strong groups have joined forces on this issue - the extractive industry, and right-wing nationalists. The combination has taken the current debate to a much more dramatic level than previously, at the same time as our window of opportunity is disappearing."...

COMMON SENSE: Last week, while Americans were obsessing about the government shutdown and the shenanigans of an opportunistic Native American to make a political statement, a major shift in Middle Eastern politics occurred. 

It almost went unnoticed by the media, despite the fact that it will change everything.

Saudi Arabia has begun to develop its own nuclear capability. 
They have done this because their intelligence has confirmed that Iran is close to having nuclear weapons, along with the capacity to deliver them. 
...The Saudis, who were reluctant to take this step, placed a great deal of faith in President Trump to keep the Iranians in check and to change the political dynamics in the Middle East, but they are no longer certain he can survive the relentless attacks from the pro-Iranian Democrats. 

Out of self-preservation, the Saudis have taken this bold step to level the playing field with their mortal enemy, Iran.

...Nevertheless, there is now a nuclear arms race in the Middle East that cannot be stopped by any other means than force, but the fools in the media are too consumed with "getting Trump" to inform Americans about this. 

Not many are even paying attention.

Things are actually much worse than they appear.
One year ago, I called on Congress to make a simple deal on immigration requiring both Republicans and Democrats to do two things — compromise and respect the wishes of the American people.
This deal is so logical and so easy, even politicians in Washington should be able to grasp it.
But, as the events of the past few weeks have shown, they cannot.

But Democratic leaders are not ready to make this or any deal.
Sure, the Democrats have voiced support and cast votes for border security in the form of physical barriers in the past, but they won’t do so now because of their hatred of the president of the United States.
Hate is bad that way; it clouds your judgment.
As former senator Alan Simpson said at the funeral for former president George H.W. Bush, “Hatred corrodes the container it’s carried in.” 
That’s the predicament that Democratic leaders find themselves in now.

• Defining Fascism

Defining fascism is no simple task.
In 2016, Merriam-Webster noted it was the most-searched term in its online dictionary.
There’s a reason for this: nobody really knows what fascism is.
Even among academics, there is little consensus.
“Scholars of fascism do not agree on what fascism means,” The Atlantic noted, “nor, for that matter, do fascist scholars.”
On one point, however, scholars are united.
