SYRACUSE, N.Y., Nov. 22, 2019 — Days after an alleged racist incident caused Syracuse University to pull the plug on all fraternity activities — even those of minority fraternities — the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education is calling on the university to stop punishing students it doesn’t even suspect to have done anything wrong.
...On Sunday, administrators sent out a campus-wide email announcing the suspension of all Syracuse fraternities’ social activities for the remainder of the semester.
Among the fraternities punished by Syracuse are numerous chapters of the Syracuse Interfraternity Council, National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and Multicultural Greek Council, which include African American, Latino, Asian American, and Jewish fraternal organizations.
Collective punishment seems to be just fine with Syracuse.
According to Syverud, “[w]hile only one fraternity may have been involved in this particular incident, given recent history, all fraternities must come together with the University community to reflect upon how to prevent recurrence of such seriously troubling behavior.”...

During Wednesday’s Democratic presidential debate, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren said she is willing to spend taxpayer money to remove parts of the southern border wall built under the Trump administration.
Warren — who once called President Donald Trump’s border wall a monument to “hate and division” — was asked by a debate moderator if she would ask taxpayers to foot the bill to remove sections of wall between the U.S. and Mexico. In response, the progressive said she was open to the idea, and said the immigration crisis was “man-made.”

Those of an uncharitable frame of mind might point out that if you continually endorse candidates who say they will put your taxes up you can’t get upset when they put your taxes up...

Property taxes are a form of ‘wealth tax’, they are levied based on some assessment of the market value of an asset you hold....But you cannot pay your tax liability with these assets – the authorities will not accept $3,000 worth of bricks from your house in settlement of a $3,000 property tax bill. Your tax liability has to be settled in cash. And, while your assets may have increased in value by 6%...there is no guarantee that your cash holdings will have increased at a similar rate...

They seek to raise cash based on an assessment of the notional value of assets but your access to cash is not always congruent with your access to assets."
