How epidemiologists try to fool us with flawed statistical practices | Climate Etc.
- Climate Etc. recently carried several insightful posts about How we fool ourselves.
"...We have just completed a study for the National Association of Scholars [1] that took a deep dive looking at flawed statistical practices used in the field of environmental epidemiology. The study focused on air quality−health effect claims; more specifically PM2.5−health effect claims. However, the flawed practices apply to all aspects of risk factor−chronic disease research. The study also looked at how government bureaucrats use these claims to skew policy in favor of PM2.5 regulation and their own positions.
All that we discuss below is drawn from our study. Americans need to be aware that current statistical practices being used at the EPA for setting policy and regulations are flawed and obviously expensive. Viewers can download and read our study to decide the extent of the problem for themselves.
...2. Bias in academic researchAcademic researcher incentives reward exciting research with new positive (significant association) claims—but not reproducible research. This encourages epidemiologists – who are mainly academics – to wittingly or negligently use various flawed statistical practices to produce positive, but (we show) likely false, claims.
There are numerous key biases that epidemiologists continue to unintentionally (or intentionally) ignore in studies of air quality and health effects. This is done to make positive, but likely false, research claims. Some examples are:
- multiple testing and multiple modeling
- omitting predictors and confounders
- not controlling for residual confounding
- neglecting interactions among variables
- not properly testing model assumptions
- neglecting exposure uncertainties
- making unjustified interventional causal interpretation of regression coefficients..

15 Reasons Why You Can Never Trust the Mainstream Media - Quertime
"...2. Mainstream media don’t check their sources
It is known that the professional news media always need to check sources and facts before writing about something. However, it doesn’t always work this way: sometimes mainstream media publish unchecked information accidently and sometimes they do it on purpose for their own reasons (usually related to government and businesses that sponsor them).
3. Mainstream media rely on the government..
Speaking about government: it would be wise to mention that all mainstream media are sponsored by certain politicians, who use them to promote their ideas and campaigns. This means that these media not only promote politics but also twists facts, presenting you wrong information.
8. All mainstream media want is to make a profit
While the media have to be our most important source of information, entertainment and education, actually it doesn’t work this way. All the mainstream media want to do is to receive more money, and so their work is dictated by the profit only. They choose not the most important news and facts, but the ones that will bring them more profit. Moreover, they alter them if their sponsor says so – so, you’re basically supporting misinformation and media sponsors when you’re turning to the mainstream media for news...Read all.

Teach racism to the teachers?-----White people are inherently racist, argues diversity expert hired by elementary school district | The College Fix
"The Hermosa Beach City School District recently hired a diversity, equity and inclusion consultant who will help train teachers about their white privilege, among other duties.
...Atwater, in response to the concerns, said she would not use “shame or guilt” when she teaches on topics such as race, color blindness, implicit bias and similar topics, according to the video of the school board meeting.
Atwater also said during the meeting that what she trains on is not “critical race theory.” But the scholar’s published works include weighing in on “whiteness norms … that systemically benefit white people” and arguments against a color-blind society, according to her faculty bio.
One Hermosa Beach citizen, Matt McCool, who has been vocal against the Hermosa Beach City School District’s push for DEI training, posted a video of Atwater in which she explains how in her trainings she gently guides people to understand they are racist even if they think they are not:
