His killer, Mohammed Bouyeri, then 26, explained in a note stabbed into van Gogh’s stomach that van Gogh’s film Submission was guilty of “blasphemy”—it criticized Islam’s treatment of women—and he threatened that van Gogh’s colleague Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the Jews, and other nonbelievers would meet a similar end.
• Van Gogh’s murder came two years after that of gay right-wing politician Pim Fortuyn—shot to death nine days before a general election, which the party he led looked likely to win. His killer, Volkert van der Graaf, said he killed Fortuyn, who had called Islam “backward” and supported ending immigration, as a favor to the Netherlands’ Muslim community.

Some energy analysts, though, say the crisis has another cause: government policies that are driving up costs.

• “Prices for home heating this winter on average are estimated to increase by about 10.5% from last year’s winter heating season due to expected colder winter weather in the Northeast and Midwest states from $889 to $982,” the association said in a press release.
• Families who heat with electricity will see their costs rise from $1,063 to $1,208, a 13.6% increase, the association said. Households heating with propane can expect a 7.3% increase, with costs going from $1,343 last winter to $1,442.

As the last remaining votes are tallied nationwide, several key House races that are yet to be called will decide which party controls the chamber in 2025.

• As of Saturday evening, The Associated Press still hasn’t called 20 seats in 10 states. The current status has Republicans leading Democrats by 213 seats to 202. A majority is reached at 218 seats.

If the current margins endure once all votes are counted, Republicans could net 11 more seats, for a total of 224. Democrats could add 9 seats, for a total of 211 as the new Congress is sworn in next year.
